TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY is more of a tribute to the celebrated American composer Jerome Kern than an actual biography per se, and the cast alone makes this wonderful Technicolor musical extravaganza well worth adding to your collection. The stars are Robert Walker and Van Heflin – with cameo appearances by June Allyson, Lena Horne, Angela Lansbury, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Van Johnson, Dinah Shore, Marge & Gower Champion, Tony Martin…and many, many others as well. Though best remembered today for his dramatic leading role on Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” (which LOOT can also supply to you, by the way;) fresh, pleasant-faced Robert Walker makes an excellent Jerome Kern. However, as much of the story is told in flashbacks, Walker (who was only 32 when the picture, was shot) had to be made up so as to look a good bit older for certain scenes. The end result is an interesting facial blend that’s somewhere between James Dean and Robert Vaughn! One of Kern’s best-known works, “Showboat,” is dealt with in some detail, with the climactic show-stopping “Old Man River” being brilliantly performed as the closing number by an unbelievably young Frank Sinatra – who’s never sounded better!
