Novelist Maria Dahvana Headley's new "translation" of Beowulf is serviceable and accessible/understandable to a modern audience, written with modern language and colloquialisms. I found some of the modern colloquialisms to be jarring and detracted from the narrative. I'm not sure I would walk up to King Hrothgar and address him as Bro! even if I was Prince Beowulf. Also "We all know a boy can't daddy until his daddy's dead" (line 19-20), and "Meanwhile, Beowulf gave zero shits" (line 1441), and the like - just no, not to my taste. I did find Headley's introduction particularly interesting, especially her perspective of Grendel's mother.
