Soore another for a steady winner who counts with kids. Mel Jensen
and friend Cotton (both Negroes) don't get their share of passes
from basketball toammate Caskie Bennett who obviously resents an
integrated court. Coach Thorpe counsels the team to work together,
and Mel explains it to his father ("It isn't all the whites, Dad.
It's just a few") but Caskie remains remote. Even Mel's civil
return of the Bennett's strayed kitten doesn't break the ice; a
coach-to-mother conversation, however, and benchwarming (after the
two boys come to blows) do start a thaw. Mr. Jensen had said
"They'll get used to us and we'll get used to them" and here is a
sober unfolding of possibility. The source of Caskie's change of
heart is vague which may be the most realistic solution;
furthermore, Mel is no Simple character either, which may well
enlarge his potential audience. Best of all, it has its own rhythm.
(Kirkus Reviews)
Mel Jensen is new to the Titans basketball team, but he knows he could be a vital part of the starting lineup—if only two other plays would give him a chance to show his stuff. But Caskie and Stoney seem bent on ignoring him, and Mel knows it's because he's black. Should Mel fight fire with fire, or should he try to get along, if only for the sake of the team?
