This is a police procedural series unlike any you've seen before. Because our "anti-hero" is actually a serial-killer, albeit one who only goes after bad people. What makes this show work is the refreshingly original insight we gain as we view the inner workings of the mind of a homicidal killer, one with clear-cut precision and yet the ability to put up a facade to mask his inner demon and try to be a normal member of the public. And he also happens to work for the Miami Police Department, not as a detective but as a forensic expert, who specializes in blood spatter. (A subject he is well-versed in).
The character of Dexter Morgan is based on the books Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsay, and the translation to a TV series is surprisingly effective, with all the main characters from the books present, the highlights being Matsui and Doakes who really bring their parts to celluloid life.
The storylines are truly intriguing, with large amounts of dark humour laced throughout each episode. And through these 12 episodes there is also a progressive story arc that builds to a chilling and exciting climax. It's smart, funny and thrilling, a combination these days that's very rare. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret Dexter Morgan is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter's homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice.
A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel and to keep up his appearance as a caring socially responsible human being.
Led by an amazing performance by Emmy nominated actor Michael C. Hall, Dexter is one of the most critically acclaimed, must see television shows of the year!
