There were many letters written between Alfred and Rose but the letter he wrote to someone else would be the one he would regret ever writing. "We're engaged to be wed," said Alfred, putting the ring on Rose's finger before holding her at arm's length and dancing 'Ring a Ring a Rosy' round and round until they were both quite dizzy. "I'm going to tell the world," he said, running to the bridge over the river and jumping up onto the parapet he shouted at the top of his voice. "I'm engaged to be wed. I love Rosie Fitton." "Get down, you'll fall in the river," shouted Rose. "I don't care. I love you Rose Fitton and I want the world to know," he shouted again before jumping down and running back to her. He kissed her, then removing his bayonet from its scabbard he carved their names 'Alfred + Rose' into the tree inside a heart with the word 'Forever' underneath.
