When I arrived at Cannanore in the blessed province of Malabar, the
Hindu Rameni led me in front of his house which he wished me to
rent from him during my stay there. To get my first glimpse of it
he and I had to join forces and work our way together through the
wild tangle of the garden. It was in the usual style of the
European houses in India, a one-storied bungalow with a
high-pitched roof, overhanging eaves and a wide veranda across the
