Mise-en-Scène is an immersive exploration of the social lives of
urban landscapes - the actors and actions that compose the daily
theatre of urban life. Conceived as a unique collaboration between
an urbanist, Chris Reed, and a photographer, Mike Belleme, the book
combines photo essays, original maps and drawings, newly
commissioned essays, excerpts from historical writings, and
interviews with residents. The result is a rigorous and artful
examination of the social, cultural, environmental, and economic
challenges of life in American cities today. Â Richly
illustrated and designed to appeal to a broad audience of
architects, designers, photographers, and general public interested
in the contemporary city, the book is centred around seven visual
case studies depicting life in seven American cities: Los Angeles,
Galveston, St. Louis, Green Bay, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Boston.
Each case study combines black-and-white photography - taken from
street level, often in intimate detail - with annotations and
drawings that highlight urban forms. An inherent interconnectedness
across geographies, scales, and situations emerges throughout the
book. Reed and Belleme demonstrate how a celebratory moment can be
felt equally in Green Bay’s compact downtown or amidst the chaos
and sprawl of Los Angeles, and how while the tensions present in
the redevelopment of previously inundated waterfronts in Boston or
Galveston can be understood in parallel with an urgent set of
conversations on race and identity in St. Louis. Â Six essays
by a diverse and interdisciplinary group of contributors prompt
further reflection on the visual case studies. Chris Reed writes on
the social lives of cities, designer Sara Zewde on the image of the
city, artist De Nichols about social equity and identity, ecologist
Nina-Marie Lister on the climate imperative, curator Mimi Zeiger on
cities and culture, and architect Julia Czerniak on design
practice. Â Through this thoughtful exploration of everyday
moments and the urbanism that supports them, Reed and Belleme
present new opportunities for creating direct interaction between
citizens and propose an ecological and social focus for
city-building around a concept of common ground.

Today many of the old pulp crime writers have achieved success to
one degree or other. Sadly, like so many artists, they had to die
before anyone took their work seriously. Featuring stories by Frank
Johnson, John P. Rees, Carlota M. Hardy, Frederick C. Davis, David
Goodis, C.S. Montanye, Norman A. Daniels, David Manners, Edward
Ronns, William O'Sullivan, Jerome Severs Perry, Neil Moran, Robert
Leslie Bellem, Mat Rand, Michael Bittner, Robert Turner, Joe
Archibald, David James, Henry Herbert Knibbs, Benton Braden, and
Cyril Plunkett.
This volume collects seven Bellem tales from pulp magazines such as
"Spicy Mystery Stories," "Fifth Column Stories," and "The Ghost --
Super-Detective." Included are: "The Man Who Was Not," "Enough
Glory," "The Cock Crows 'Murder'," "Knife in the Dark," "Kill That
Headline," "War Plans Divided," and "Murder's Messenger."
Introduction by Darrell Schweitzer.
The pulp, Super-Detective, with its adventure hero, Jim Anthony,
started out as a competitor to Doc Savage. After 10 issues, the
publisher turned Anthony into a hardboiled detective. This Flip
Book, with a book on each side, explores both worlds. The front
side is "Legion of Robots," a Doc Savage style novel from the issue
of November 1940, written by Victor Rousseau. The flipside has
"Murder's Migrants," a hardboiled story from March 1943, by the
team of Robert Leslie Bellem and W.T. Ballard. Introductions that
describe the behind-the-scenes story of Super-Detective are
provided by, respectively, John McMahan and John Wooley.
The identity of Secret Agent "X" is an enigma. He comes and goes
veiled in a cloak of mystery. His name, his background, and even
his date of birth are riddles, even to those who know him best. He
is a man of a thousand faces -- master of make-up, voice
impersonation, and acting. With the dogs of war snarling at the
door of the United States, Secret Agent "X" goes where other
investigators dare not follow . . . to the cesspits of Hawaii,
where spies and plots abound, where a secret Hindu cult does the
bidding of a foreign government bent on plunging the U.S.A. into
the midst of a new global war! This thrilling Secret Agent "X"
novel, among the best in the series, will delight all fans of
classic pulp fiction! This edition features an additional story,
"Latin Blood," by Robert Leslie Bellem, which features Dan Turner,
Hollywood Detective.
The famous "Spicy" pulp magazines of the 1930s and 1940s are among
the rarest and most sought-after publications by collectors. The
"Spicy" magazines -- which included Spicy Mystery, Spicy Adventure,
Spicy Detective, and others -- published a titilating mix of
fantasy, horror, mystery, action-adventure, and suspense,
punctuated by episodes of torture, sadism, sex, and other risque
elements. Although tame by current standards, and sometimes of
dubious literary merit, these publications presented tales which
thrilled a sensation-hungry audience. Despite the themes and
constraints of the market, writers who would later become famous --
including Hugh B. Cave, E. Hoffman Price, Robert Leslie Bellem, and
many more -- were frequent contributors. The December 1939 issue of
Spicy Adventure Stories includes contributions from Robert Leslie
Bellem, Lew Merrill (Victor Rousseau), Hugh Speer, Ken Cooper,
Clayton Maxwell, Clark Nelson, and Harley L. Court.
Written and created by Robert Leslie Bellem, the hardnosed, feisty,
Hollywood Detective, Dan Turner, is featured in eight stories and
one comic presentation in this compilation. Read Temporary Corpse,
Death's Bright Halo, Beyond Justice, Dark Star of Death, Blackmail
from Beyond, Crimson Quest, Cat Act, and Latin Blood, as well as
the comic, The Murdered Mummy. All stories are from Spicy Detective
and Private Detective and are fully illustrated with the original
artwork which accompanied their publication in the pulps.
