Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad
quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are
images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to
keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the
original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain
imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made
available for future generations to enjoy.
The Handbook of American Romanticism presents a comprehensive
survey of the various schools, authors, and works that constituted
antebellum literature in the United States. The volume is designed
to feature a selection of representative case studies and to assess
them within two complementary frameworks: the most relevant
historical, political, and institutional contexts of the antebellum
decades and the consequent (re-)appropriations of the Romantic
period by academic literary criticism in the twentieth and early
twenty-first centuries.
The Four Stones are believed to have been created years ago by four
of our gods as a punishment for the humans misdeeds. Either that or
they wanted to see what kind of choices we would make once we found
them. Diaty, The Goddess of Time, Hydrona, The Goddess of Crashing
waves, Cyclos, The God of Tearing Winds, and Zenarith, The God of
Incinerating Flames all poured a small ounce of their power into
the Four Stones. They were thinking correctly if they believed that
we would destroy each other in our lusts for their power. The gods
were horrible. Why create something that we would do nothing but
destroy each other with? Or is there more to it than that...
This book summarizes the current state of knowledge concerning
bacteria that use halogenated organic compounds as respiratory
electron acceptors. The discovery of organohalide-respiring
bacteria has expanded the range of electron acceptors used for
energy conservation, and serves as a prime example of how
scientific discoveries are enabling innovative engineering
solutions that have transformed remediation practice. Individual
chapters provide in-depth background information on the discovery,
isolation, phylogeny, biochemistry, genomic features, and ecology
of individual organohalide-respiring genera, including
Dehalococcoides, Dehalogenimonas, Dehalobacter, Desulfitobacterium
and Sulfurospirillum, as well as organohalide-respiring members of
the Deltaproteobacteria. The book introduces readers to the
fascinating biology of organohalide-respiring bacteria, offering a
valuable resource for students, engineers and practitioners alike.
The King by My Side is a message of enrichment and illumination
that shatters barriers and opens hearts. King, an ordinary yet
extraordinary housecat, exposes the truth that all animals feel,
think, speak and experience life in much the same ways that humans
do. King's story delivers the gift of improved, enriched, and
enhanced relationships with your animal friends. King reveals that
you can look into your companion's eyes and know that there is a
beautiful, loving soul behind them who truly does adore you and is
waiting for you to discover their genuine presence. That is a
powerful revelation
Drawing on a wealth of oral interviews collected by activist and
politician Julian Bond and historian Phyllis Leffler, Conversations
on Black Leadership uses the lives of prominent African Americans
from all sectors of society to trace the contours of Black
leadership in America. Included here are fascinating accounts from
a wide variety of figures such as John Lewis, Clarence Thomas,
Eleanor Holmes Norton, Vernon Jordan, Angela Davis, Amiri Baraka,
and many more. Stories of identity are foregrounded here - stories
about the self, about group and community, about value and meaning.
These individual and collective memories form a genealogy of social
and cultural identity, demonstrating how leadership emerges from
historical struggle rooted in the promise of a brighter future, and
providing valuable insights into the intractable disparities of
race in America.
This volume collects papers that were presented at the 34th
International Ludwig Wittgenstein Symposium 2011 in Kirchberg am
Wechsel, Austria. They focus on five key debates in contemporary
epistemology: Does the term "to know" vary its meaning according to
features of the contexts in which it is uttered? What role may
"epistemic virtues" play in our cognitive activities? What is the
surplus value of having knowledge instead of mere true belief? What
is the structure and significance of testimonial knowledge and
belief? And when is disagreement rational, especially if it occurs
among "epistemic peers"? In addition, a section is devoted to novel
discussions of the work of Wittgenstein. Papers by A. Beckermann,
E. Brendel, W. Davis, C. Elgin, S. Goldberg, J. Greco, A.
Kemmerling, H. Kornblith, M. Solomon, M. Williams, and many others.
Celebrating one of the leading figures in contemporary number
theory - John H. Coates - on the occasion of his 70th birthday,
this collection of contributions covers a range of topics in number
theory, concentrating on the arithmetic of elliptic curves, modular
forms, and Galois representations. Several of the contributions in
this volume were presented at the conference Elliptic Curves,
Modular Forms and Iwasawa Theory, held in honour of the 70th
birthday of John Coates in Cambridge, March 25-27, 2015. The main
unifying theme is Iwasawa theory, a field that John Coates himself
has done much to create. This collection is indispensable reading
for researchers in Iwasawa theory, and is interesting and valuable
for those in many related fields.
Public Management and Governance examines the factors which make
government critically important and the barriers which often stop
it being effective. It questions what it means to have effective
policies, efficient management and good quality public services,
and it explores how the process of governing could be improved. Key
themes include: the challenges and pressures facing governments
around the world; the changing role of the public sector in a
'mixed economy' of provision; governance issues such as ethics,
equalities, transparency and citizen engagement. This revised and
updated third edition includes eight new chapters which provide
in-depth coverage of key new aspects of public management and
governance. It also features a wide selection of international case
studies and illuminating examples of how public policy, management
and governance can be improved - and what happens when they fail.
Each chapter is supplemented with discussion questions, group and
individual exercises, case studies and recommendations on further
reading. Public Management and Governance is one of the leading
student textbooks in its field, featuring contributions from top
international authors and covering a wide range of key topics in
depth. It is an essential resource for all students on
undergraduate and postgraduate courses in public management, public
administration, government and public policy.
