Es handelt sich dabei um eine Thematik, die in jung- ster Zeit zentrale Bedeutung erhalten hat, und von der man glaubt, oder doch zumindest hofft, heute kaufliche Datenbanksysteme hatten langst die entspre- chenden Loesungen realisiert. Das Problem kann in zwei Dimensionen betrachtet werden. Die erste ist fast schon klassisch, sie betrachtet die Schemaevolution zur Anpassung von Datenbanken an geanderte Anforderungen. Die zweite Dimension wurde erst in den letzten Jahren als Teilproblem bei der Integration bzw. Interoperabilitat von verschiedenen Datenbanken bekannt. Erneut sollen Schemata, jetzt aber aus mehreren Datenbanken, verandert werden, mit dem Ziel einer flexiblen Integration teilweise uberlappender und moeglicherweise gar widerspruchlicher Universes of Discourse . Beide Dimensionen sind bislang sowohl in existierenden Systemen wie auch in der Forschung unbefriedigend geloest. Formale und systemtechnische Grund- lagen sowie umfassende und realisierbare Konzepte waren bislang nur im Ansatz vorhanden. Auf internationaler Ebene existieren grosse Unterschiede im jugendlichen Substanzkonsum, die theoretisch sowohl auf individuelle wie auch auf Umfeldfaktoren zuruckgefuhrt werden. Die Schweiz weist als foderalistisches Land eine sehr vielfaltige Struktur auf: Sie ist in 26 gesellschaftlich, kulturell, okonomisch, okologisch und politisch unterschiedliche Kantone geteilt. Die vorliegende Dissertation zielte auf einen Vergleich kantonaler Auspragungen im Alkohol-, Tabak- und Cannabiskonsum von Jugendlichen. Sie suchte ausserdem plausible Erklarungen fur mogliche kantonale Substanzkonsumunterschiede. Die Kantone Aargau, Bern, Freiburg, Jura, Tessin, Wallis und Zurich lieferten reprasentative Daten uber den Substanzkonsum von 11- bis 15-jahrigen Jugendlichen aus drei Erhebungswellen 1998, 2002 und 2006. Diese Daten wurden im Rahmen der Gesamtschweizer Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children"-Studie erhoben. Die 25'017 nach kantonalen Demographien gewichteten Falle mundeten in die Sekundaranalyse der vorliegenden Arbeit ein. Die Logit-Analysen ergaben signifikante generelle kantonale Unterschiede beim wochentlichen Alkoholkonsum sowie bei der Cannabis-Lebenszeitpravalenz.
