Gathering some of the most important Wright scholarship in the world, along with perspectives from emerging Wright critics, "Richard Wright: New Readings in the 21st Century," ""explores new themes and theoretical orientations. Essays center on modernism, racism and spatial dimensions, the transnational and political Wright, Wright and class, Wright and the American 1950s and 1960s, and some of the first analyses of Wright's recently published "A Father""'""s Law" (2008). This dynamic collection combines literary and cultural theory with methods of archival research to provide an expanded vision of Wright's impact on thinking in the twenty-first century.
We study embeddings of PSL2(pa) into exceptional groups G(pb)forG = F4,E6,2E6,E7,andp aprimewitha,b positive integers. With a few possible exceptions, we prove that any almost simple group with socle PSL2(pa), that is maximal inside an almost simple exceptional group of Lie type F4, E6, 2E6 and E7, is the fixed points under the Frobenius map of a corresponding maximal closed subgroup of type A1 inside the algebraic group. Together with a recent result of Burness and Testerman for p the Coxeter number plus one, this proves that all maximal subgroups with socle PSL2(pa) inside these finite almost simple groups are known, with three possible exceptions (pa = 7, 8,25 for E7). In the three remaining cases we provide considerable information about a potential maximal subgroup.
This wide-ranging collection of essays contains unexplored themes and theoretical orientations centering on racism and spatial dimensions; the transnational and political Wright; Wright and masculinity, Wright and the American 1950s and 1960s; and some of the first analyses of Wright's recently published A Father ' s Law (2008).
Fusion systems are a recent development in finite group theory and sit at the intersection of algebra and topology. This book is the first to deal comprehensively with this new and expanding field, taking the reader from the basics of the theory right to the state of the art. Three motivational chapters, indicating the interaction of fusion and fusion systems in group theory, representation theory and topology are followed by six chapters that explore the theory of fusion systems themselves. Starting with the basic definitions, the topics covered include: weakly normal and normal subsystems; morphisms and quotients; saturation theorems; results about control of fusion; and the local theory of fusion systems. At the end there is also a discussion of exotic fusion systems. Designed for use as a text and reference work, this book is suitable for graduate students and experts alike.
This book provides an accessible introduction to the state of the art of representation theory of finite groups. Starting from a basic level that is summarized at the start, the book proceeds to cover topics of current research interest, including open problems and conjectures. The central themes of the book are block theory and module theory of group representations, which are comprehensively surveyed with a full bibliography. The individual chapters cover a range of topics within the subject, from blocks with cyclic defect groups to representations of symmetric groups. Assuming only modest background knowledge at the level of a first graduate course in algebra, this guidebook, intended for students taking first steps in the field, will also provide a reference for more experienced researchers. Although no proofs are included, end-of-chapter exercises make it suitable for student seminars.
