Murder on the Opinion Page is a mystery thriller about people who
disappear after they write a letter to the editor. Veteran police
detective, Dan Kawowski and forensics intern Jane Dockery, suspect
a serial killer is on the loose. Why would someone be kidnapped and
murdered for writing a letter to the editor? Kawowski and Dockery
search for the killer, and stumble upon a plot no one would ever
dream could happen. This couldn't happen in America, could it?
It's the year after Dan Kawowski and Jane Dockery had eliminated an
al-Qaeda terror cell in Des Moines County, Colorado. Kawowski is
now the county sheriff and she's an FBI agent specializing in
counterterrorism. Dockery's first assignment is to help counter an
al-Qaeda threat in the desert southwest. She's teamed with an
ancient desert tracker, Old Joe Gannon, and his monster dog,
Laddie. Once in the desert, Dockery and her patrol, discover that
an al-Qaeda assassination team has made Kawowski, the love of her
life, its main target.
Estates on the Edge recounts the decline and rescue of low-income
government-sponsored housing estates across Northern Europe giving
a vivid account of the intense physical, social and organisational
problems facing social landlords in five countries. The ownership,
management and letting patterns diverge sharply between the
Continent, Britain and Ireland, between council landlords,
non-profit, co-operative and independent landlords. But their
community problems reveal similar trends towards poverty,
polarisation and incipient breakdown. To avert the threat of
incipient ghettos the stabilising pressures need to be stronger
than the growing pressures towards chaos. Governments have become
directly involved in estate rescue because of the vital social role
estates are playing. The book traces the process of decline and
renewal and shows how we can learn the lessons of policy failures
and successes.
That there is diversity in the work and retirement behaviors and at
titudes of our small-town respondents is obvious. Thus, attempts to
legislate broad solutions to problems of Social Security and other
factors of most interest to older persons can be assured of having
both supporters and detractors among the elderly in rural settings
as well as among other age groups. Within the diversity observed,
how ever, are some results requiring further attention. The
relatively positive adjustment to not working of the retired men in
the study bodes well for those expecting to leave the work force in
the next few years. This positive adjustment mirrors that observed
in several other recent studies, of course. Still, those not making
positive adjustments must be considered; they will continue to
require the attention of various support services so that attempts
to solve their problems will be successful. Equally significant is
the fact that no clear picture of the work and retirement
orientation of these rural men emerged. On the one hand, they were
remaining in the labor force slightly longer than men in urban 67
68 LATER LIFE TRANSITIONS samples and the job satisfaction and
preferred retirement age for men still working had increased over
the decade. On the other hand, the value placed on work had
decreased, attitudes toward retirement had become more positive,
and the men were more work than non work oriented."

I didn't set out to be a terrorist. As a student activist, I moved
from protesting the war in Vietnam to waging guerrilla warfare to
overthrow the government. A bank robbery we undertook to finance
this "revolution" resulted in the murder of Boston police officer
Walter Schroeder. I fled and lived as a fugitive for 23 years. In
1993 I surrendered to authorities, pled guilty to armed robbery and
manslaughter, and served six years in prison. I haven't given up on
social change. The more I have studied how things change, the more
I see that the acts of this moment are hugely powerful, that peace
in the moment is the way to peace in the world. This book is one
way for me to share some of what I have learned. - Katherine Ann
