At the age of eighteen, Aaron Cohen left Beverly Hills to prove
himself in the crucible of the armed forces. He was determined to
be a part of Israel's most elite security cadre, akin to the
American Green Berets and Navy SEALs. After fifteen months of
grueling training designed to break down each individual man and to
rebuild him as a warrior, Cohen was offered the only post a
non-Israeli can hold in the special forces. In 1996 he joined a
top-secret, highly controversial unit that dispatches operatives
disguised as Arabs into the Palestinian-controlled West Bank to
abduct terrorist leaders and bring them to Israel for interrogation
and trial.
Between 1996 and 1998, Aaron Cohen would learn Hebrew and
Arabic; become an expert in urban counterterror warfare, the
martial art of Krav Maga, and undercover operations; and
participate in dozens of life-or-death missions. He would
infiltrate a Hamas wedding to seize a wanted terrorist and pose as
an American journalist to set a trap for one of the financiers
behind the Dizengoff Massacre, taking him down in a brutal,
hand-to-hand struggle. A propulsive, gripping read, Cohen's story
is a rare, fly-on-the-wall view into the shadowy world of "black
ops" that redefines invincible strength, true danger, and
inviolable security.

The growing interest in multiple commitments among researchers and
practitioners is evinced by the greater attention in the literature
to the broader concept of work commitment. This includes specific
objects of commitment, such as organization, work group,
occupation, the union, and one's job. In the last several years a
sizable body of research has accumulated on the multidimensional
approach to commitment. This knowledge needs to be marshaled, its
strengths highlighted, and its importance, as well as some of its
weaknesses made known, with the aim of guiding future research on
commitment based on a multidimensional approach. This book's
purpose is to summarize this knowledge, as well as to suggest ideas
and directions for future research. Most of the book addresses what
seems to be the important aspects of commitment by a
multidimensional approach: the differences among these forms, the
definition and boundaries of commitment foci as part of a
multidimensional approach, their interrelationships, and their
effect on outcomes, mainly work outcomes. Two chapters concern
aspects rarely examined--the relationship of commitment foci to
aspects of nonwork domains and cross-cultural aspects of commitment
foci--that should be important topics for future research.
Addressing innovative focuses of multiple commitments at work,
this book:
*suggests a provocative and innovative approach on how to
conceptualize and understand multiple commitments in the workplace;
*provides a thorough and updated review of the existing research
on multiple commitments;
*analyzes the relationships among commitment forms and how they
might affect behavior at work; and
*covers topics rarely covered in multiple commitment research and
includes all common scales of commitment forms that can assist
researchers and practitioners in measuring commitment forms.

Curtis Mayfield. The Chi-Lites. Chaka Khan. Chicago's place in the
history of soul music is rock solid. But for Chicagoans, soul music
in its heyday from the 1960s to the 1980s was more than just a
series of hits: it was a marker and a source of black empowerment.
In Move On Up, Aaron Cohen tells the remarkable story of the
explosion of soul music in Chicago. Together, soul music and
black-owned businesses thrived. Record producers and song-writers
broadcast optimism for black America's future through their
sophisticated, jazz-inspired productions for the Dells and many
others. Curtis Mayfield boldly sang of uplift with unmistakable
grooves like "We're a Winner" and "I Plan to Stay a Believer."
Musicians like Phil Cohran and the Pharaohs used their music to
voice Afrocentric philosophies that challenged racism and
segregation, while Maurice White of Earth, Wind, and Fire and Chaka
Khan created music that inspired black consciousness. Soul music
also accompanied the rise of African American advertisers and the
campaign of Chicago's first black mayor, Harold Washington, in
1983. This empowerment was set in stark relief by the social unrest
roiling in Chicago and across the nation: as Chicago's homegrown
record labels produced rising stars singing songs of progress and
freedom, Chicago's black middle class faced limited economic
opportunities and deep-seated segregation, all against a backdrop
of nationwide deindustrialization. Drawing on more than one hundred
interviews and a music critic's passion for the unmistakable
Chicago soul sound, Cohen shows us how soul music became the voice
of inspiration and change for a city in turmoil.
This is a fascinating and thoroughly researched exploration of the
best-selling gospel album of all time. For two days in January
1972, Aretha Franklin sang at the New Temple Missionary Baptist
Church in Los Angeles while tape recorders and film cameras rolled.
Everyone there knew the event had the potential to be historic:
five years after ascending to soul royalty and commercial success,
Franklin was publicly returning to her religious roots. Her
influential minister father stood by her on the pulpit. Her mentor,
Clara Ward, sat in the pews. Franklin responded to the occasion
with the performance of her life and the resulting double album
became a multi-million seller - even without any trademark hit
singles. But that was just one part of the story. Franklin's warm
inimitable voice, virtuoso jazz-soul instrumental group and Rev.
James Cleveland's inventive choral arrangements transformed the
course of gospel. Through new interviews, musical and theological
analyses as well as archival discoveries, this book sets the scene,
traces the recording's traditional origins and pop infusions and
describes the album's enduring impact. "33 1/3" is a series of
short books about a wide variety of albums, by artists ranging from
James Brown to the Beastie Boys. Launched in September 2003, the
series now contains over 60 titles and is acclaimed and loved by
fans, musicians and scholars alike. "It was only a matter of time
before a clever publisher realized that there is an audience for
whom "Exile on Main Street" or "Electric Ladyland" are as
significant and worthy of study as "The Catcher in the Rye" or
"Middlemarch"...The series, which now comprises 29 titles with more
in the works, is freewheeling and eclectic, ranging from minute
rock-geek analysis to idiosyncratic personal celebration." ("The
New York Times Book Review", 2006).
There has been a growing interest among scholars in the fields of
organizational behaviour and industrial psychology in what can be
termed "the dark side of the organizations." A main concept in this
regard this is both important and relevant counterproductive work
behaviours (CWBs), which can be defined as deliberate actions that
harm the organization or its members. These behaviours include a
variety of acts that can be directed toward organizations (CWB-O)
or toward other people (CWB-P). Destroying organizational property,
purposely doing work incorrectly, and taking unauthorized work
breaks are examples of CWB-O, whereas hitting a co-worker,
insulting others, and shouting at someone are forms of CWB-P.
Despite the growing interest in CWBs as a research issue, not
enough is known about the determinants of CWBs. The goal of
Counterproductive Work Behaviors therefore is to cover this
stimulating, important, and innovative issue of dark triad
personalities in the workplace. The book will deal with important
aspects of this issue, such as the characteristics of dark triad
personalities, how they operate and damage organizations, what
organizations are more vulnerable to them, ways to diagnose and
detect them, and ways to handle dark triad personalities and
prevent them from harming organizations and employees. There is no
doubt that the issues covered by Counterproductive Work Behaviors
will continue to attract academic attention and therefore the book
is essential reading for researchers, academics and business
professionals alike in the fields of Organizational Studies and
Behaviour, Organizational Psychology, Strategy, Human Resource
Management, Leadership and the related disciplines.
