Advances in Bio-Mechanical Systems and Materials (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Andreas Ochsner, Holm Altenbach Advances in Bio-Mechanical Systems and Materials (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)

This monograph presents the latest results related to bio-mechanical systems and materials. The bio-mechanical systems with which his book is concerned are prostheses, implants, medical operation robots and muscular re-training systems. To characterize and design such systems, a multi-disciplinary approach is required which involves the classical disciplines of mechanical/materials engineering and biology and medicine. The challenge in such an approach is that views, concepts or even language are sometimes different from discipline to discipline and the interaction and communication of the scientists must be first developed and adjusted. Within the context of materials' science, the book covers the interaction of materials with mechanical systems, their description as a mechanical system or their mechanical properties.

Why do certain works of art make it into the canon while others just enjoy a brief moment of recognition, if at all? How do moments produce monuments, and why are monuments erased from our cultural memory in only a moment? - Taking into account these cultural processes of creating, storing, remembering and forgetting that are omnipresent and have an immense influence on how we perceive artefacts and cultural events, the articles in this collection analyze the phenomenon of cultural production, transmission and reception from various angles, drawing on approaches from both literary and cultural studies. With its transdisciplinary approach, this book uniquely responds to an everyday cultural phenomenon that so far has not received such wide-ranging attention.

Lad Trouble - Masculinity and Identity in the British Male Confessional Novel of the 1990s (Paperback): Andrea Ochsner Lad Trouble - Masculinity and Identity in the British Male Confessional Novel of the 1990s (Paperback)
Andrea Ochsner
R1,101 Discovery Miles 11 010 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the 1990s, the male confessional novel, most prominently represented by Nick Hornby "(High Fidelity), " but also by writers such as Tim Lott "(White City Blue)" and Mike Gayle "(My Legendary Girlfriend), " articulated the structure of feeling of the male generation in their late twenties/early-to-mid-thirties. Ochsner presents the advent of the male confessional novel in a fresh and yet critical light, challenging the feminist claim that the genre should be understood as a backlash against feminism and a relapse into sexism. By applying an eclectic theoretical framework, ranging from Raymond Williams to Anthony Giddens to Judith Butler and Jacques Derrida, the study illustrates why the male confessional novel is too complex a phenomenon to be solely interpreted in terms of retrosexism. It convincingly shows how the multitude of postmodern gender scripts adds to the crisis of identity and to the problematic nature of clearly defined gender relationships.
