In order to analyse configurations of power that transcend the
territorial trap, the Caucasus is an excellent case in point. Its
past and present exhibit an extraordinary richness in power
practices of diverse forms that intersect on various scales. This
comprehensive volume offers an innovative procedural perspective on
the actual workings of power not necessarily tied to the
nation-state. Its focus goes well beyond national scales to tackle
the manifold impacts of transboundary flows. The authors, from a
wide range of academic disciplines, provide original empirical data
from this intriguing but largely untapped region, with respect to
the critical study of statehood. They also shed light on the
diversity of political space and the ongoing process of spatial
re-alignment. The chapters in this collection focus on: land
governance practice in the North Caucasus; practices of local
administration in Georgia; Shia influence from Iran in Azerbaijan;
and trajectories of Ottoman influence in Adjara and Abkhazia
respectively. They cover the South as well as North Caucasus,
examining configurations of power that entangle smaller and larger
scales, and providing perspectives on transboundary flows between
the area and both Turkey and Iran. This book was originally
published as a special issue of the journal Eurasian Geography and
Economics.

Religious scholars and leaders engage in a nonpartisan social media
letter-writing campaign following the 2021 Presidential
inauguration. In the aftermath of the 2016 presidential election,
biblical scholar Andrea L. Weiss and graphic designer Lisa M.
Weinberger teamed up to create Values & Voices, a national
nonpartisan campaign that used letters and social media to
highlight core American values connected to our diverse religious
traditions. The result was American Values, Religious Voices: 100
Days, 100 Letters, a collection of one hundred letters written by
some of America’s most accomplished and thoughtful scholars of
religion interspersed with original artwork from Twitter followers
during the first one hundred days of the Trump presidency. In 2021,
Weiss and Weinberger invited religious scholars and leaders to
address President Biden, Vice President Harris, and members of the
117th Congress in their national letter writing and social media
campaign. During the first 100 days of the Biden administration,
religious leaders from twenty-five states and twenty denominations
once again sent one letter a day to elected leaders in Washington.
These letters bring an array of religious texts and teachings to
bear on our most pressing contemporary issues. Arranged
chronologically, the 2021 edition features over sixty new
contributing letter writers, new artwork, original essays, and an
updated biblical index suggesting how the letters can be
incorporated into speeches, homilies, and classrooms. An alternate
table of contents arranged by core values that emerged in the
letters over the 100 days allows for thematic reading.Â
In an era of rapidly increasing technological advances and
international exchange, how did young people come to understand the
world beyond their doorsteps? Focusing on Germany through the lens
of the history of knowledge, this collection explores various media
for children-from textbooks, adventure stories, and other
literature to board games, museums, and cultural events-to probe
what they aimed to teach young people about different cultures and
world regions. These multifaceted contributions from specialists in
historical, literary, and cultural studies delve into the ways that
children absorbed, combined, and adapted notions of the world.
Originally published more than twenty years ago and winner of a
Lambda Literary Award, Paris Was a Woman is a rare profile of the
female literati in Paris at the turn of the century. Now with a new
preface and illustrations, this "scrapbook" of their work along
with Andrea Weiss' lively commentary highlights the political,
social, and artistic lives of the renowned lesbian and bisexual
Modernists, including Colette, Djuna Barnes, Gertrude Stein, Alice
B. Toklas, Sylvia Beach, and many more.Painstakingly researched and
profusely illustrated, it is an enlightening account of women who
between wars found their selves and their voices in Paris. A wealth
of photographs, paintings, drawings, and literary fragments combine
with Weiss' revealing text to give an unparalleled insight into
this extraordinary network of women for who Paris was neither
mistress nor muse, but a different kind of woman.
