"THE BRILLIANT AND CONTROVERSIAL CRITIQUE OF AMERICAN CULTURE WITH
NEARLY A MILLION COPIES IN PRINT"
In 1987, eminent political philosopher Allan Bloom published "The
Closing of the American Mind," an appraisal of contemporary America
that "hits with the approximate force and effect of electroshock
therapy" ("The New York Times") and has not only been vindicated,
but has also become more urgent today. In clear, spirited prose,
Bloom argues that the social and political crises of contemporary
America are part of a larger intellectual crisis: the result of a
dangerous narrowing of curiosity and exploration by the university
elites.
Now, in this twenty-fifth anniversary edition, acclaimed author and
journalist Andrew Ferguson contributes a new essay that describes
why Bloom's argument caused such a furor at publication and why our
culture so deeply resists its truths today.
Common Good Law is the only book to deal with this neglected area
of Scots property law. The second edition includes discussion of
the important recent case of Portobello Park Action Group
Association and of the changes made by the Community Empowerment
(Scotland) Act 2015 and the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2016.
Called an everyman's guide to Washington (The New York Times), P.
J. O'Rourke's savagely funny and national best-seller Parliament of
Whores has become a classic in understanding the workings of the
American political system. Originally written at the end of the
Reagan era, this new edition includes an extensive foreword by the
renowned political writer Andrew Ferguson -- showing us that
although the names and the players have changed, the game is still
the same. Parliament of Whores is an exuberant, broken-field run
through the ethical foibles, pork-barrel flimflam, and bureaucratic
bullrorfle inside the Beltway that leaves no sacred cow unskewered
and no politically correct sensitivities unscorched. Highly pungent
and wickedly accurate observations ... [from a] boisterous,
pedal-to-the-floor humorist. -- The New York Times Book Review
Outrageous ... It is insulting, inflammatory, profane, and
absolutely great reading. -- The Washington Post Book World A gonzo
civics book ... O'Rourke is like a trophy hunter let loose in an
unguarded zoo. -- Chicago Tribune
The First World War produced a unique outpouring of prose and
poetry depicting the stark realism of a brutal and futile war; no
war before or since has been so extensively chronicled nor its
misery so exposed. First-hand experiences in the trenches compelled
poets such as Siegfried Sassoon and Wilfred Owen to write with a
resolute honesty, describing events with more feeling and sincerity
than the heavily censored letters that were sent home. Accounts of
the Great War are typically written from an English perspective,
but Ghosts of War encompasses a selection of contributions from
across Europe and America, with an emphasis on the Scottish
involvement. Using the words of over one hundred poets and writers,
Andrew Ferguson recounts the war from its optimistic beginning to
its sombre conclusion, bringing the conflict to life in a dramatic,
emotive and, at times, humorous way.
Before he grew up and became one of Washington's most respected
reporters and editors, Andrew Ferguson was, of all things, a
Lincoln buff. Like so many sons of Illinois before him, he hung
photos of Abe on his bedroom wall, memorized the Gettysburg
Address, and read himself to sleep at night with the Second
Inaugural or the Letter to Mrs. Bixby. Ferguson eventually outgrew
his obsession. But decades later, his latent buffdom was reignited
by a curious headline in a local newspaper: Lincoln Statue Stirs
Outrage in Richmond. Lincoln? thought Ferguson. Outrage? I felt the
first stirrings of the fatal question, the question that, once
raised, never lets go: Huh? In Land of Lincoln, Ferguson embarks on
a curiosity-fueled coast-to-coast journey through contemporary
Lincoln Nation, encountering everything from hatred to adoration to
opportunism and all manner of reaction in between. He attends a
national conference of Lincoln impersonators in Indiana; seeks out
the premier collectors of Lincoln memorabilia from California to
Rhode Island; attends a Dale Carnegie-inspired leadership
conference based on Lincoln's management style; drags his family
across the three-state-long and now defunct Lincoln Heritage Trail;
and even manages to hold one of five original copies of the
Gettysburg Address. Along the way he weaves in enough history to
hook readers of presidential biographies and popular histories
while providing the engaging voice and style of the best narrative
journalism. Ultimately, Land of Lincoln is an entertaining,
unexpected, and big-hearted celebration of Lincoln and his enduring
influence on the country he helped create.

Wolf Hall meets The Man in the High Castle in this mind-bending
science fiction classic, now presented in an authoritative new
edition from Library of America Plucked from time, Sir Thomas More
arrives on the human colony of Astrobe in the year 2535 A.D., where
there is trouble in utopia: can he and his motley followers save
this golden world from the Programmed Persons, and the soulless
perfection they have engineered? The survival of faith itself is at
stake in this thrilling, uncategorizable, wildly inventive first
novel--but the adventure is more than one of ideas. As
astonishingly as Philip K. Dick and other visionaries of the 1960s
new wave, Lafferty turns the conventions of space-opera science
fiction upside-down and inside-out. Here are fractured allegories,
tales-within-tales, twinkle-in-the-eye surprises, fantastic byways,
and alien subjectivities that take one's breath away. Neil Gaiman
has described Lafferty a genius, an oddball, a madman; Gene Wolfe
calls him our most original writer. Past Master, long-hailed by
insiders and now presented in authoritative form, with an
introduction by Andrew Ferguson and unpublished omitted passages
included in the notes, deserves to perplex and delight a wider
audience.

After Henry's girlfriend Val leaves him and transfers to another
school, his grief begins to manifest itself in bizarre ways. Cause
and effect, once so reliable, no longer appear to be related in any
recognizable manner. Either he's hallucinating, or the strength of
his heartbreak over Val has unhinged reality itself. Henry decides
to run away. If he can find Val, he thinks, everything will make
sense again. So he leaves his mother's home in the suburbs and
marches toward the city and the woman who he thinks will save him.
Once on the George Washington Bridge, however, a powerful
hallucination knocks Henry out cold. When he awakens, he finds
himself kidnapped by two strangers--one old, one middle-aged--who
claim to be future versions of Henry himself. Val is the love of
your life, they tell him. We've lost her, but you don't have to.
