was written by the renowned Cambridge Classical scholar and
literary critic Arthur Augustus Tilley (1851-1942). Rather than

forces, political, religious, social, and literary, which helped

are included in the appendices. This book will be of value to

Tilley and the development of French literature.

This volume contains the French text of Jean-Francois Regnard's
1696 comic play Le Joueur, edited by Arthur Tilley and first
published in 1918. Tilley's edition draws principally from the text
of G. d'Heylli's 1876 edition of the Theatre du Regnard and adopts
modernised spelling, punctuation, and arrangement of scenes. The
text of the play is supported by an introduction, examining the
life of Regnard and the reception of Le Joueur, and notes on some
of the more difficult words and phrases that appear in the work for
which Tilley consulted several contemporary seventeenth-century
dictionaries.
First published in 1921, this volume analyses the life and works of
the celebrated French dramatist Moli re. The emphasis is on
providing the reader with an understanding of the playwright's
characteristic genius, with particular concentration on the common
sense attributes that gave his comedy universal appeal. This
approach is also seen as the driving force behind the moral
perspective of the plays as, rather than engaging with lofty
sentiments reserved for the few, Moli re takes the viewpoint of
those involved in the human community when describing them.
Beginning with the known facts about his life, the text then moves
through his works, providing a detailed and rigorous examination of
each area. This is a highly readable study that will be of value to
anyone with an interest in drama, French literature, and the
history of literary criticism.
First published in 1914, this book contains selections, in poetry
and prose, from French Romantic writers. These selections serve to
illustrate the theories put forward in a companion volume, The
Romantic Movement in French Literature (1910). As a general rule,
verse pieces are included in their entirety, although an exception
is made in the case of a well-known passage from Victor Hugo's 'R
ponse un acte d'accusation'. Prose selections are generally
extracts from larger pieces, although two complete stories are
included from Balzac and M rim e. All selections are presented in
the original French. This carefully compiled text will be of value
to anyone with an interest in French literature and Romanticism.
First published in 1918, and reprinted in 1924 and 1955, this
volume gathers together some of the more important writings of
Charles Augustin Sainte-Beuve (1804 69), the renowned French
literary critic who moved in the same circles as Victor Hugo.
Although Sainte-Beuve was sometimes condemned as a literary
dilettante during his lifetime, his lack of a formal system of
critical principles can be seen as the reason for the longevity of
his works; literature is regarded as an expression of personality
and is thus approached in a highly personal, original manner.
Consummately edited by Arthur Tilley, the text contains a broad
cross section of articles from 1835 to 1864, together with a
34-page introduction. This is a fascinating book that will be of
value to anyone with an interest in literature or literary
criticism.
Originally published in 1920, this book presents a series of
extracts from French literature with editorial introductions to the
selected writers. The extracts were chosen both on the basis of
literary merit and as representative of the history of France. All
selections are presented in French, with editorial material in
English. They are grouped together on the basis of their theme or
historical period. Numerous illustrative figures are also provided.
This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in French
literature and history.
First published in 1913, as the second edition of a 1910 original,
this book contains a series of extracts from French Romantic texts,
together with short introductory essays. Extracts were selected
with the intention of revealing the importance of Romanticism for
French literature at a time when the movement was being widely
denigrated. The texts are given in French and all other material is
presented in English. This book will be of value to anyone with an
interest in French literature and Romanticism.
