This exceptional source is probably the best of the contemporary accounts of Hitler in power, albeit from a heavily pro-Nazi stance. The testimonies collected together were based on interviews conducted by Heinz A. Heinz in 1933 and 1934, shortly after Hitler had taken power. Millions of ordinary Germans fell under Hitler's spell and this book is a creation of those emotions. It is very much a product of its time. Written by the party big-wigs, such as Goering, Speer and Goebbels, and published in 1935 under the title Adolf Hitler Bilder Aus Dem Leben Des Furhers, it appeared at a time when they were at the height of their unrivaled powers. This fascinating volume encompasses the superb photography of Heinrich Hoffman, the Munich photographer who was ever present on Hitler's journeys and who grew fabulously wealthy as a result of his intimate access to Hitler. Hitler had an innate understanding of what we would now call public relations. He recognised the excellence of Hoffman's photography and maintained control of his image by limiting the access of other photographers. He also strictly controlled Hoffmann's activities and personally selected the portraits that were allowed to go into circulation. The book incorporates sections on Hitler and the German people, Hitler and the German workers, Hitler and public works and so on, all accompanied by a series of excellent photographs which form a remarkable record of the public face of a man during his brief spell of absolute power. The Nazis were the first party who harnessed the full power of the media in a coherent and all-embracing manner. This is a classic example of the strength of their presentation skills. It is a compelling time-capsule which conveys vividly in almost visceral way the zeitgeist of the thirties in Nazi-Germany. By 1935 the bulk of the German people had fallen in behind Adolf Hitler, and with documents as persuasive as this, it is not too difficult to comprehend the allure of the glittering facade which a stream of publications such as this book sought to create and maintain.

R472 R386 Discovery Miles 3 860 Save R86 (18%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Gallic Wars were a series of military campaigns waged by the Roman proconsul Julius Caesar against several Gallic tribes. They lasted from 58 BC to 50 BC and culminated in the decisive Battle of Alesia in 52 BC, in which a complete Roman victory resulted in the expansion of the Roman Republic over the whole of Gaul. The wars paved the way for Julius Caesar to become the sole ruler of the Roman Republic. Although Caesar portrayed this invasion as being a preemptive and defensive action, most historians agree that the wars were fought primarily to boost Caesar's political career and to pay off his massive debts. Still, Gaul was of significant military importance to the Romans, as these had been attacked several times by native tribes both indigenous to Gaul and further to the north. Conquering Gaul allowed Rome to secure the natural border of the river Rhine. The Gallic Wars are described by Julius Caesar as himself in this book, which was originally titled Commentarii de Bello Gallico, it is a pertinent and only slightly tendentious and altogether the most important historical source regarding the conflict. This updated edition contains the translated text and various illustrations depicting Roman warfare and key moments in Caesar's journey.

Jean Roch Coignet; Edited by Bob Carruthers; Introduction by Bob Carruthers
R647 Discovery Miles 6 470 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Jean-Roch Coignet (1776 - 1865) was a French soldier who served in the military campaigns of the Consulate and First French Empire, up to the Battle of Waterloo. Coignet was conscripted in 1799 and served as a grenadier in the 96th Line. Early in his career he fought hard at the Battle of Montebello and the Battle of Marengo, after which he was promoted to the guard and awarded the Legion d'honneur. As a grenadier of the guard Coignet fought at Ulm, Austerlitz, Jena, Eylau and Friedland. After being promoted to corporal, he took part in the invasion of Spain and the Battle of Somosierra and the pursuit of the British army. Coignet then fought at Aspern-Essling. After victory in the campaign Coignet rose to the rank of sergeant, eventually becoming baggage-master. Coignet was sent on a series of solo missions for the Emperor during the disastrous invasion of Russia. After this, Coignet was promoted to captain in Napoleon's staff. Coignet participated in the campaigns of 1813-1814 and rejoined the Emperor during the Hundred Days. He was present at Ligny and survived Waterloo. Coignet settled in Auxerre, running a tobacconist's shop. He later wrote his memoirs detailing his military service in The Notebooks of Captain Coignet after the death of his wife in August 1848. These were initially published in Auxerre between 1851 and 1853 under the title Aux Vieux de la Vieille.

It draws heavily on war-time intelligence reports to produce a fascinating insight into the development and combat history of the Panzer IV at the tactical and operational level. The U-boat War In The Atlantic Volume 3 - 1944-1945 (Paperback): Bob Carruthers The U-boat War In The Atlantic Volume 3 - 1944-1945 (Paperback)
Bob Carruthers
R431 Discovery Miles 4 310 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This is the fascinating account, as told from the German perspective, of the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest-running, continuous military campaign in World War II, spanning from 1939 through to Germany's defeat in 1945. At its core was the Allied naval blockade of Germany, which was announced the day after the declaration of war, although it quickly grew to include Germany's counter-blockade. The name "Battle of the Atlantic," was coined by Winston Churchill in 1941 and he famously stated that the U-boats were the only thing that really frightened him. The U-boat war encompassed a campaign that began on the first day of the European war and lasted for six years, involved thousands of ships and stretched over thousands of square miles of ocean, in more than 100 convoy battles and perhaps 1,000 single-ship encounters. In the 68 months of World War II, 2,775 Allied merchant ships were sunk for the loss of 781 U-boats. This is the story of that massive encounter from the German perspective. Published in three volumes, this work was compiled under the supervision of the U.S. Navy Department and the British Admiralty by Fregattenkapitan G nther Hessler. The author, though without previous experience as a writer, had first hand experience of U-boat warfare having commanded a U-boat in 1940 and 1941. For the remainder of the war he was Staff Officer to the Flag Officer commanding U-boats. He had access to German war diaries and other relevant documents concerning U-boat command, and this work based on these many documents, tells the story entirely from the viewpoint of that command. For this reason this work is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of World War II from primary sources and will be of enduring interest to those engaged in attempting to unravel the true nature of submarine warfare in World War II.

Blitzkrieg in the Balkans and Greece 1941 (Hardcover): Bob Carruthers Blitzkrieg in the Balkans and Greece 1941 (Hardcover)
Bob Carruthers; Introduction by Bob Carruthers
R821 Discovery Miles 8 210 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The German campaigns in the Balkans, Greece and the seizure of Crete are detailed in this long neglected account of the campaign as described from the German point of view. Out of print since the fifties, this new edition is edited and introduced by Emmy Award winning author and historian Bob Carruthers. Based mainly on original German records and post-war military writings by veterans including Dr. Helmut Greiner, General Burkharth Mueller-Hillebrand, and General Hans von Greiffenberg, this fascinating account encompasses the lessons and conclusions drawn from the same German sources. The work of preparing this study in English, which consisted of translating basic German records and manuscripts, performing additional research, expanding and then rewriting the narratives with an eye for continuity and factual data, was done chiefly by Mr. George E. Blau of the Foreign Studies Branch, Special Studies Division, Office of the Chief of Military History. In the process of presenting the material, every effort has been made to give a balanced account of German strategy and operations in the Balkans during the spring of 1941.

The Battle of the Bulge - The First Eight Days (Hardcover): S.L.A. Marshall The Battle of the Bulge - The First Eight Days (Hardcover)
S.L.A. Marshall; Edited by Bob Carruthers
R741 Discovery Miles 7 410 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Hold the Bastogne line at all costs." Order to Combat Command B, December 21st 1944 This is the fascinating account, as recorded from the US perspective, of the bitter fighting during the eight days and nights of encirclement at Bastogne. First published in the pages of the Infantry Journal in 1946, this contemporary account by S.L.A. Marshall was rescued from obscurity by the US Army's Center Of Military History. There are few better or more authoritative accounts of the struggle as seen through the eyes of the American soldiers who stood fast at Bastogne. Sent to rest and recuperate, the weary paratroopers and GIs found themselves in the middle of a siege while all hell let loose around them. This is the definitive overview of their conflict as recounted in the year following the battle. This masterful overview is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the Battle of the Bulge.

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle - Illustrated & Annotated (Paperback): Bob Carruthers The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle - Illustrated & Annotated (Paperback)
Bob Carruthers; Translated by James Ingram
R595 Discovery Miles 5 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle is one of the most important sets of historical documents concerning the history of the British Isles. Without these vital accounts we would have virtually no knowledge of some of the key events in the history of these islands during the dark ages and it would be impossible to write the history of the English from the Romans to the Norman Conquest. The history it tells is not only that witnessed by its compilers, but also that recorded by earlier annalists, whose work is in many cases preserved nowhere else. At present there are nine known versions or fragments of the original 'Anglo-Saxon Chronicle' in existence. All of the extant versions vary (sometimes greatly) in content and quality, and crucially all of the surviving manuscripts are copies, so it is not known for certain where or when the first version of the Chronicle was composed. The translation that has been used for this edition is not a translation of any one Chronicle; rather, it is a conflation of readings from many different versions containing primarily the translation of Rev. James Ingram from 1828. The footnotes are all those of Rev. Ingram and are supplied for the sake of completeness. This edition also includes the complete Parker Manuscript. The book is illustrated throughout with paintings and engravings.

I Knew Hitler - The Lost Testimony by a Survivor from the Night of the Long Knives (Paperback): Kurt G. W. Ludecke I Knew Hitler - The Lost Testimony by a Survivor from the Night of the Long Knives (Paperback)
Kurt G. W. Ludecke; Edited by Bob Carruthers
R1,033 Discovery Miles 10 330 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

An insider's account of life with Adolf Hitler - now back in print for the first time in 75 years First published in 1938 "I Knew Hitler" is the missing link in the literary trail which traces the fortunes of Adolf Hitler from Linz to Berlin. There are surprisingly few personal accounts of life with Hitler from inside the inner circle during the years before he seized power and besides Goebbels' diaries Ludecke is by far the most important of them. Dedicated by its author to the memory of Ernst Roehm, the publication of this brand new edition means that Ludecke's explosive memoir is back in print for the first time in 75 years. Kurt Ludecke was a former confident of Hitler's who had the misfortune to find himself on the wrong side of the political gulf which led to the 1934 blood purge better known outside of Germany as "The Night Of The Long Knives. As the power struggle between the SS and the SA threatened to engulf him, Hitler finally took decisive action and was personally involved in the vicious in fighting which saw the arrest and execution of many senior SA figures including Roehm himself. Ludecke was a man in the wrong place at the wrong time and was actually incarcerated twice on Hitler's orders before finally escaping to Switzerland. For many years this fascinating and highly readable account of life with Hitler's inner circle was dismissed by the academic world as a heavily biased and therefore unreliable as a main primary resource. However a number of recent scholarly assessments have confirmed what most historians suspected all along; Ludecke is in fact an excellent and highly reliable original source. The rehabilitation of Ludecke is a timely development as he provides the only detailed account surrounding the actions of Adolf Hitler into the world of Adolf Hitler as he took the first steps from Landsberg prison to achieve power through the horse trading following the ill starred election of 1933. Ludecke also throws a powerful new light on the events of the Night Of the Long Knives and gives the clearest indication that we have today that there was indeed a genuine SA plot to overthrow Hitler and set the party on a more rigorous route towards a truly National socialist state. Ludecke is indispensible reading for anyone with an interest in the political history of the Third Reich.

This new publication of the entire primary source provides the reader with access to the complete historical document and provides a unique insight into the past by reproducing 'Mein Kampf' as it was presented to British readers in the thirties.

The History of the Zulu War (Paperback): Frances E. Colenso, Edward Durnford The History of the Zulu War (Paperback)
Frances E. Colenso, Edward Durnford; Introduction by Bob Carruthers
R764 Discovery Miles 7 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The great work of Colenso and Durnford which is exceptional among contemporary histories in that it attempted to view the conflict from both sides. Frances Colenso was the daughter of Bishop Colenso, whose Bishopric included Zululand at the time of the war. She understood the Zulu nation was a sympathetic observer. This excellent study written by an author who was close to the events, was originally published very shortly after the war. Frances Colenso had a close personal relationship with Colonel Anthony Durnford, who was killed at Isandlwhana and who posthumously became one of the scapegoats for the disaster. Frances was therefore able to call upon the assistance of Durnford's brother, Edward who was also a soldier and who was therefore in a position to provide this excellent work with the vital military knowledge, authority and precision. This great work which resulted from their collaboration was the first, and remains the most significant survey of the Zulu War and the events that led up to it. It endures today and forms as an essential addition to any library encompassing the history of the Zulu Wars. The engravings and illustrations are contemporary and are reproduced exactly as they appeared in 1879 in the pages of the Illustrated London News and the Graphic. These wonderful engravings provide a direct link with the past and together with the Colenso and Durnford text to produce an absorbing account of the Zulu War through Victorian eyes.
