British Imperialism and Australia (1939) looks at the early
economic history of Australia, which towards the end of the period
under review became an important field of British Imperial
development. The establishment of a peasant economy in New South
Wales was attempted half a world away from the imperial architects,
but war with revolutionary France interrupted the transportation of
convicts and poor freemen, and in doing so gave the scheme a
character quite unlike that originally envisaged by Pitt and
Sydney.
This text is a practical and very useful guide for police officers
of all ranks, designed to prepare them for attending court. Most
police officers will at some point be required to attend court and
many officers attend on a regular basis. Going to Court is a unique
text which demystifies and explains the court process. The book
covers the main features and processes of the four relevant courts
for police officers - the Magistrate's Court, the Crown Court, the
Youth Court and the Coroner's Court. The book provides information
on court procedures, giving evidence, case progression and case
file preparation. Accessible and easy to use, there are many
helpful flowcharts, diagrams, practical tips and court plans. This
book is a must have for all police officers who need advice and
practical help with this often daunting experience. It will also be
of use to fire service professionals who need to attend court.
The fields of photonics and phononics encompass the fundamental
science of light and sound propagation and interactions in complex
structures, as well as its technological applications. This book
reviews new and fundamental mathematical tools, computational
approaches, and inversion and optimal design methods to address
challenging problems in photonics and phononics. An emphasis is
placed on analyzing sub-wavelength resonators, super-focusing and
super-resolution of electromagnetic and acoustic waves, photonic
and phononic crystals, electromagnetic cloaking, and
electromagnetic and elastic metamaterials and metasurfaces.
Throughout this book, the authors demonstrate the power of layer
potential techniques for solving challenging problems in photonics
and phononics when they are combined with asymptotic analysis. This
book might be of interest to researchers and graduate students
working in the fields of applied and computational mathematics,
partial differential equations, electromagnetic theory, elasticity,
integral equations, and inverse and optimal design problems in
photonics and phononics.
The Gard in southern France was the scene of extensive bloodshed in
1790, when opponents of the Revolution tried unsuccessfully to
prevent change, and again in 1815, when they sought revenge through
a carefully prepared White Terror. The revolutions of 1830 and 1848
also provoked violent conflict in the Gard, and even when the
department appeared to enjoy tranquillity, political and social
relations there were soured by intimidation and fear. This study
shows how the royalist counter-revolutionaries were able to
polarise opinion by emphasising the Protestantism of their
opponents. Anti-Protestant sentiment, accentuated by the
association of Protestants with the political and economic
institutions of the Revolution and Empire, produced a
counter-revolutionary movement in which local considerations
predominated. The Catholic royalist leaders' ambition to achieve
maximum autonomy for their particular royaume du Midi brought them
into conflict not only with central government but also with their
proclaimed loyalty to the Bourbons.
