In a reporting tour de force, award-winning journalist Steven Brill
takes an uncompromising look at the adults who are fighting over
America's failure to educate its children--and points the way to
reversing that failure.
Brill not only takes us inside their roller-coaster battles, he
also concludes with a surprising prescription for what it will take
from both sides to put the American dream back in America's
schools.

What would you do if you only had only thirty days to live? What
if that time was shortened to twenty-four hours-or even one
hour?
You can't control the amount of time you have left, but you can
control how you spend that time. Timothy J. Brill, a pilot,
philosopher, and adventure seeker, examines the nature of existence
and humanity in a series of essays, considering how you can prevent
fear from dominating your life, avoid being a victim by seeking
answers, recognize the detrimental nature of feelings of
entitlement, and stand up for what is right.
We live in a world of increasing isolation, self-delusion and
hatred, where any moral voice is labeled as a freak. We only live
an illusion of freedom, and we need a new worldview that promotes
the dignity of every person and all of creation.
Join Tim as he explores how to create this new worldview with a
spirit of charity, love, and, most importantly, a whole new
attitude.
Consequences at a Glance takes a look back at the author's exploits
and achievements during his youth, as well as the terrible mistakes
he committed. It is filled with his trials and errors, which Brill
explains why and how they happened. It pays special attention on
the effects of alcohol and drugs, and the dangers of living under
their influences. Along the way, Brill admits his errors and
suggests that it is essential to learn from the elders'
life-threatening and brutal punishment that alcohol can cause. This
book is specially-written to educate readers, especially the youth,
about the recklessness, the impulsiveness, and the irresponsibility
that come with youth. From the day of his accident, his painful
recovery, and to his rehabilitation, Brill's autobiography will
prove to be an educational and reflective read to concerned people.

In this controversial study, Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) applies the
theories and evidence of his psychoanalytic investigations to the
study of aboriginal peoples and, by extension, to the earliest
cultural stages of the human race before the rise of large-scale
civilisations. Freud points out the striking parallels between the
cultural practices of native tribal groups and the behaviour
patterns of neurotics. Beginning with a discussion of the incest
taboo, he compares some of the elaborate taboo restrictions seen in
these cultures to the scrupulous rituals of compulsion neurotics,
who in a similar fashion are wrestling with the ambivalent emotions
aroused by the incest taboo. He suggests that many of the rituals
of culture are developed as psychological reactions to taboos,
which prohibit the acting out of an infantile impulse that would be
socially destructive. Freud concludes by invoking his famous
Oedipal complex as the key to the development of culture.;The
repressed psychological urge to kill the father as a rival for the
mother's affections is the underlying motive for the symbols and
ceremonies of religion with its rituals of atonement and its
notions of angry gods, original sin, and human guilt. Although
Freud's theories are controversial today, this masterful synthesis
and its undeniable influence on later scholars of religion,
anthropology, and psychology make it a seminal work.
"Goth Culture" explores Goths' expressive practices of dress,
fashion, style and the body, in relation to issues of identity and
representation. The book shares vivid accounts of the
author's experiences exploring gender and sexuality and doing
fieldwork in the Gothic subculture. Through the voices of Goths
from the UK, US and Germany, it draws the reader into the
gender-bending and heavily gendered world of Goth. It reassesses
the significance of the dress of both male and female Goths,
examining these striking and often highly creative subcultural
fashion displays. Using a wide range of methods and sources,
from ethnography to critical examination of music, literature,
social theory and different types of popular media, "Goth Culture"
offers an original and accessible analysis of the fashion, media
and counterculture of the Gothic world.
