Is winter a cause of depression? Does cell phone use compromise driving ability? These questions and others from the world of psychology touch on our everyday experiences, and are also areas of research that many students want to explore further. "Psychology Applied to Everyday Life" provides the reader with a portal to discovering what psychologists know about these questions. For each question, the authors review a recent research article and provide a straightforward answer to the question. The writing is conversational, informal, and non-technical. The authors deal with topics in a straightforward manner, allowing readers to develop an understanding of each topic.

"Psychology Applied to Everyday Life" divides its 59 questions into seven fun sections:

Sex, Booze, and Other Fun Things

Raising the Little Ones

Cops, Robbers, and Forensics

Memory and Intelligence

Anxiety, Stress, and Staying Cool

Odds and Ends

Notes from the Shrink

For those interested in further investigation into a topic, the authors provide additional analysis and references. In addition to reviewing recent research, the authors consider questions from the practice of clinical and counseling psychology. Issues in this section are illustrated with actual case studies from the authors' files, and include questions concerning how best to work with couples, whether psychotropic medications (such as anti-depressant and anti-anxiety agents) are effective, and recent developments in counseling techniques.

The Secret Meaning of Names (Hardcover): Pierre Le Rouzic, Rodney N. Charles The Secret Meaning of Names (Hardcover)
Pierre Le Rouzic, Rodney N. Charles; Created by 1stworld Publishing
R1,117 Discovery Miles 11 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Pierre Le Rouzic's The Name Book, intrigues its audience with a stunningly accurate description of their characters based solely on the name they bear. Containing over 9,000 names, this volume is a priceless encyclopedia of wisdom - a name book that has passed the test of time. This book is fun An international bestseller with over 3 million copies sold outside the USA, it provides an accurate analysis of our personality based solely on the name we bare. Index includes over 9,000 names - described in 80 chapters. 85 graphic illustrations (called name portraits) convey the message in a glance. An invaluable resource for new parents or people wanting to change their name. Opening chapters explain why our names, culture, magnify, or restrict aspects of our personalities Provides guidelines for choosing correct names for new born babies or name changes. "A name is a reservoir of energy, and this makes good sense" The constant repetition of the syllables of our names, "this harmony," ends up having a significant influence on the development of our personalities. Names contain secret vibrations we are unaware of, yet which exist nonetheless-just as we are unaware of the sound from an ultrasonic whistle that a dog hears perfectly well. If we admit the existence off these vibrations, which are different for each name, it is not hard to imagine that they can resonate with something inside us and trigger different reactions in us, according to the name we bare. This is to say, a name can change an individual, and can effect one's personality and to a certain extent, destiny. This helps us understand what at first seems unbelievable-that names can have a direct influence on people. Pierre Le Rouzic "In every place and time, everyone has received a name. It is the first and most lasing influence we give to our children. Something this far reaching should not be mindlessly chosen according to the current trends of fashion. This book contains over 9000 names and Pierre Le Rouzie has spent 50 years researching their characteristics. It is worth your time to read the book-your children will thank you later." Reframing Yeats - Genre, Allusion and History (Paperback): Charles I. Armstrong Reframing Yeats - Genre, Allusion and History (Paperback)
Charles I. Armstrong
R1,556 Discovery Miles 15 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Reframing Yeats, the first critical study of its kind, uses a focus on genre and allusion to engage with a broad range of W. B. Yeats's writings, examining instances of his poetry, autobiographical writings, criticism, and drama. Identifying a schism in recent Yeatsian criticism between biographical and formalist methodologies, Armstrong's study combines an historicist perspective with close attention to literary form. The result is a flexible approach that casts new light on how Yeats's texts interact with their interpretative frameworks. Cognizant of both literary and political history, this book presents new interpretations of Yeats's work. Not only does it provide fresh readings of texts such as "The Municipal Gallery Re-visited," "Among School Children" and "The Resurrection", but it also raises important new questions concerning Yeats's relationship to Modernism and literary genre.
