Putting Voters in their Place - Geography and Elections in Great Britain (Hardcover): Ron Johnston, Charles Pattie Putting Voters in their Place - Geography and Elections in Great Britain (Hardcover)
Ron Johnston, Charles Pattie
R5,745 Discovery Miles 57 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why do people living in different areas vote in different ways? Why does this change over time? How do people talk about politics with friends and neighbours, and with what effect? Does the geography of well-being influence the geography of party support? Do parties try to talk to all voters
at election time, or are they interested only in the views of a small number of voters living in a small number of seats? Is electoral participation in decline, and how does the geography of the vote affect this? How can a party win a majority of seats in Parliament without a majority of votes in
the country? Putting Voters in their Place explores these questions by placing the analysis of electoral behaviour into its geographical context. Using information from the latest elections, including the 2005 General Election, the book shows how both voters and parties are affected by, and seek to
influence, both national and local forces. Trends are set in the context of the latest research and scholarship on electoral behaviour. The book also reports on new research findings.

The Boundary Commissions - Redrawing the Uk's Map of Parliamentary Constituencies (Paperback): David Rossiter, R J... The Boundary Commissions - Redrawing the Uk's Map of Parliamentary Constituencies (Paperback)
David Rossiter, R J Johnston, Charles Pattie
R840 Discovery Miles 8 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Available in paperback for the first time, this work of original scholarship is the first to trace in full detail how the UK’s system for defining parliamentary constituencies has evolved since the Great Reform Act of 1832 and how the eight redistrictings since then were undertaken.

Particular attention is paid to the five redistrictings that have been undertaken by the independent Boundary Commissions established in 1944, with a detailed study of all aspects of their work on the most recent review of all constituencies.

The book is both a standard reference work on redistribution in the UK and provides the only detailed insight into how that task is currently undertaken, based on a study of the relevant documents and interviews with over a hundred of those most closely involved. The book will be essential for all those interested in the British constitution, and administrators concerned with making the constitution successful, as well as politicians.

Money and Electoral Politics - Local Parties and Funding at General Elections (Paperback): Ron Johnston, Charles Pattie Money and Electoral Politics - Local Parties and Funding at General Elections (Paperback)
Ron Johnston, Charles Pattie
R816 Discovery Miles 8 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Political parties are crucial to British democracy, providing the foundations for mobilising voters. Their constituency branches are key links between voters and Parliamentary candidates and their activities require two vital resources - people and money. Much has been written on the decline of party membership but far less on money. In this much-needed new book, Ron Johnston and Charles Pattie use the latest research and hitherto unpublished material to explore financial differences across the UK's three main parties in the four years leading up to the 2010 General Election. They look at how much local parties raise for election campaigns and find that the more money candidates spend then, the better their performance. Analyses of their annual accounts, however, show that many local parties are unable to raise all of the money that they are entitled to spend on such campaigns. This reveals an unhealthy picture of grassroots party organisation in which the capacity to engage effectively with many voters is concentrated in a relatively small number of constituencies and is likely to remain so. This timely and essential book will make a major contribution to the literature on British elections and parties, especially to continuing debates regarding party funding. It will make important reading for academics, students, politicians, civil servants and others interested in this topic.

The Evolution of Integrated Marketing Communications - The Customer-driven Marketplace (Paperback): Don Schultz, Charles Patti,... The Evolution of Integrated Marketing Communications - The Customer-driven Marketplace (Paperback)
Don Schultz, Charles Patti, Philip Kitchen
R1,817 Discovery Miles 18 170 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book reviews, updates and enhances the basic concepts surrounding the academic theory and practice of Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC). Since the introduction of IMC in the late 1980s, the concept has spread around the world. In that expansion, many authors have written about IMC; practitioners have adopted and adapted the concept to fit their own market situations. Further, dramatic changes have occurred in the technologies used in marketing communications which consumers have accepted and employed in their consumption of marketers' messages and incentives. Thus, there have been dramatic changes in how IMC was initially envisioned and how it has developed over time.

This book identifies and discusses these changes, how they have occurred and what they mean going forward for all types of marketers around the world. Thus, IMC, and indeed integration of communications at all organisational levels is an essential in the 21st century organisations.

This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Marketing Communications.

Hugh Bochel, David Denver, James Mitchell, Charles Pattie
R4,877 Discovery Miles 48 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Scotland has a parliament for the first time in almost 300 years, and this book is an account of how this came about. The authors trace the origins and history of the demand for home rule in Scotland, focusing particularly on developments following the failure of the first referendum on the issue in 1979, which culminated in a second referendum in September 1997.
This major political event attracted national and international interest, and its decisive result was a milestone in Scottish history. This work presents an analysis of the referendum campaign at both national and local levels, including media coverage of the event and the outcome. The reactions of voters are explored on the basis of a large survey of the electorate, and lessons to be learnt about referendums in the UK and elsewhere are discussed.

Ron Johnston, Charles Pattie, Daniel Dorling, Danny Dorling, David Rossiter
R636 Discovery Miles 6 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The British electoral system treats parties disproportionately and differentially. This original study of the fourteen general elections held between 1950 and 1997 shows that the amount of bias in those election results increased substantially over the period, benefiting Labour at the expense of the Conservatives. Labour's advantage peaked at the 1997 general election when, even assuming there had been an equal share of the votes for the two parties, it would have won 82 more seats than its opponents. This situation came about because of different aspects of two well-known electoral abuses - malapportionment and gerrymandering. With the use of imaginative diagrams the book examines these processes in detail, illustrating how they operate and stresses the important role of tactical voting in the production of recent election results. -- .

Representative Democracy? - Geography and the British Electoral System (Paperback): Ron Johnston, Charles Pattie, David Rossiter Representative Democracy? - Geography and the British Electoral System (Paperback)
Ron Johnston, Charles Pattie, David Rossiter
R526 Discovery Miles 5 260 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom are elected to represent geographic constituencies; but how are these defined and what are the consequences for democracy? Tracing the UK's system of parliamentary representation from its origins in the thirteenth century right through to the present, this comprehensive new survey reveals how a system initially designed to restrain the power of monarchs gradually evolved to serve their interests, then those of political parties before the twentieth century 'settlement' of an independent process for revising the constituency map. That settlement is now under pressure, with the traditional pattern of constituencies representing communities about to be replaced by one which elevates numbers above community. Advanced under the slogan of 'making votes equal', this new regime promises fairness yet, as the authors show, is destined to fail to address the disproportional and biased election results that have long been a feature of UK politics. Concluding with a detailed consideration of the ways in which various parts of the UK have embraced alternatives to first-past-the-post over the last two decades, this book serves as a timely reminder that the needs of political parties do not always coincide with those of us, the electors. -- .

Citizenship in Britain - Values, Participation and Democracy (Paperback): Charles Pattie, Patrick Seyd, Paul Whiteley Citizenship in Britain - Values, Participation and Democracy (Paperback)
Charles Pattie, Patrick Seyd, Paul Whiteley
R1,204 Discovery Miles 12 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There are increasing concerns about changes in society and the economy which are undermining the effectiveness of democracy and weakening traditional conceptions of citizenship. What does it mean to be a British citizen in the early part of the twenty-first century? This book presents the first major empirical study of citizenship in Britain, comprising surveys of political participation and voluntary activities, and of the beliefs and values which underpin them. As well as presenting new data, the authors provide a sophisticated discussion of the concept of citizenship, and the consequences of a lack of civic engagement in a modern democracy. It examines why some people are 'good' citizens when others are 'bad' and it explores the consequences of citizenship for policy-makers and democracy. Comprehensive and accessible, this book makes a major contribution to our understanding of civic attitudes in Britain today and will appeal to students, researchers and policy-makers.

Robert Johns, David Denver, James Mitchell, Charles Pattie
R2,504 Discovery Miles 25 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In 2007 Labour lost an election in Scotland for the first time in half a century and the SNP went on to form the Scottish Government. This book explains why. Based on a unique three-wave survey of the Scottish electorate, it can truly be described as the first full-scale Scottish national election study. As such, it is notable not only for its innovative methodology but also because theories and concepts are taken from the recent electoral studies literature and applied to Scotland. Other questions investigated include the impact of campaigning and of the party leaders (at both Scottish and British level) on the election outcome. In addition, for the first time in the UK context, a special study is made of the causes and consequences of rejected ballots - the large number of which at this election caused a media outcry. This book will be required reading for anyone interested in, involved in, teaching or studying Scottish politics. It will also be an important text for those concerned with UK politics in general and attract particular interest among students of elections, both in the UK and internationally. -- .
