A New York Times Best Children's Book of 2021 "In this gloriously
unruly feminist fable, The True Story of a Mouse Who Never Asked
for It explores the power of art-making, the tedium of the
domestic, and the dangers of heteronormativity, all within
beautiful pictures and tender words. I was enchanted by the pairing
of graphic illustration and tight prose on every page. It is
luminous and evocative from start to finish." -Alisson Woods,
author of Being Lolita Folklorist Ana Cristina Herreros and
visionary illustrator Violeta Lopiz spin a deeply feminist
retelling of an old Spanish folktale in The True Story of a Mouse
Who Never Asked for It. Through rhythmic text, highly conceptual
illustrations, and a final visual narrative that is silent but
revelatory, this YA picture book builds from deceptive simplicity
to an explosive end. The story begins with a mouse, very neat and
hard-working, who makes herself a home. In disbelief that she has a
house but isn't a wife, suitors show up uninvited, each asking for
her hand. She turns everyone down... until a pack of tiny kittens
arrive, and she agrees to marry the smallest and most defenseless
of the bunch. But it does every mouse well to remember that a
kitten always grows up to be a cat. Today, the most commonly told
version of this popular folktale serves as a warning, scaring girls
to choose good men to marry by reminding them that the cat will
always devour the mouse. But this story is rooted in the
non-normative, non-performative original version, before it became
a cautionary tale. Here, by contrast, the story tells of the pain
and harm that come from falling prey to situations beyond one's
control. It is also a powerful story of reclaiming one's selfhood.

(interior art) Visually stunning, tactile, and mesmerizing, this
graphic novel is a debut at the summit from a self-taught
Argentinian visionary. Lorenzo isn't happy about moving. But in his
new room, he finds an old desk with what seems likes hundreds of
drawers. Each even has its own smell! Deep inside the desk, he
finds a book and begins to read. When he looks up, he sees all
kinds of curious things. Has the book come to life? Or is it
something else? This is a graphic novel about observation,
imagination, and the many incredible lenses through which everyday
experience might be perceived if you read. Guillermo Decurgez,
"Decur," was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1981. He is a
self-taught cartoonist and illustrator, and the author of Merci!,
Pipi cucu, Semillas 1, and Mi cajon favorito. His work has been
published in the newspapers La Nacion and La Posta Hoy, and in the
magazines Orsai, Fierro, free lyrics, Ineditadas, and N. He has
also illustrated "Cents del globe 3," the board game "The
Switcher," the "Mrs. Holle" stories, "El poroto magico," "The
almost perfect crime," and "Ivan, the Fool." His paintings have
been exhibited in France, Spain, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, La
Rioja, Buenos Aires, and Rosario. Decur's English-language graphic
novel debut, When You Look Up, will published in 2020 from
Enchanted Lion Books.

Lyric essayists draw on memoir, poetry, and prose to push against
the arbitrary genre restrictions in creative nonfiction, opening up
space not only for new forms of writing, but also new voices and a
new literary canon. This anthology features some of the best lyric
essays published in the last several years by prominent and
emerging writers. Editors Zoe Bossiere and Erica Trabold situate
this anthology within the ongoing work of resistance-to genre
convention, literary tradition, and the confines of
dominant-culture spaces. As sites of resistance, these essays are
diverse and include investigations into deeply personal and
political topics such as queer and trans identity, the American
BIPOC experience, reproductive justice, belonging, grief, and more.
The lyric essay is always surprising; it is bold, unbound, and
free. This collection highlights the lyric essay's natural capacity
for representation and resistance and celebrates the form as a
subversive genre that offers a mode of expression for marginalized
voices. The Lyric Essay as Resistance features contemporary work by
essayists including Melissa Febos, Wendy S. Walters, Torrey Peters,
Jenny Boully, Crystal Wilkinson, Elissa Washuta, Lillian-Yvonne
Bertram, and many more. Their work demonstrates the power of the
lyric essay to bring about change, both on the page and in our
communities.
