A comprehensive reference work on vernacular architecture Traditional building methods - such as those used in pueblos, timbered houses, or the Japanese minka - exist in fascinating diversity and create the face of a region. However, as a result of globalization they have been marginalized in many places. In the fastest developing countries in particular, a wealth of experience that goes back hundreds of years is being irretrievably lost, even though valuable insights can be gained for modern building. Using the examples of selected domestic buildings from all continents, 30 international experts demonstrate why we can still learn from vernacular architecture; they analyze the cultural context and the adaptation to topographic/climactic conditions, and focus on the local materials used as well as on the construction, the building process, and the necessary maintenance. A comprehensive reference work covering traditional building methods Numerous examples of vernacular domestic architecture from all five continents More than 1000 impressive color photographs and detailed drawings Also available in German

Communal living, intergenerational living, living for families, handicap-accessible living, living and working, living and leisure time - the wide variety of current demands is shaping future concepts in housing, which will have to do justice to the needs of our increasingly multilayered society. The examples in this new volume in the In Detail series are correspondingly diverse. From the demand for stroller- and wheelchairaccessible housing through facilities that accommodate the needs of senior citizens all the way to the modernization of existing buildings, the selection of projects offers a panoramic overview. Organized thematically, In Detail: Integrated Housing highlights a variety of well-defined topics, such as handicap-accessibility and flexibility of use, and presents them together with explanatory technical articles and examples of realized projects. In closing, it provides addresses of information centers and associations as well as sources of additional information.
In all debates on school system reform, teaching methods, care facilities for young children or individual funding opportunities, educational objectives are almost always at the fore. The more often issues of all-day schooling and inclusion are dealt with, the more important spatial concepts and aspects of aesthetics become. Results of international performance tests and findings from the field of developmental psychology have revealed the considerable influence that quality architecture exerts - from professional handling of design, colours, light and more to one's ability to learn, including self-determined learning and working. Therefore, the time has come for architects to deal with these issues and to familiarise themselves with the appropriate design principles. In addition to brief theoretical asides, the latest volume from the "best of Detail" series provides a wide range of completed projects - from creche to high school and community centres for children to youth centres - that demonstrate fascinating solutions for diverse construction projects for children and adolescents.

Over the past 50 years, the architectural office von Gerkan, Marg und Partner has realised 400 projects worldwide - from single-family homes to cultural edifices and office buildings, from transport facilities to master plans. Many of the buildings were constructed throughout Asia - yet how to build in the cultural environment and on the proper scale in China and Vietnam, for example? What sort of knowledge can be transferred from construction work in Europe - and how much do construction projects, in their sociologically and culturally familiar contexts, benefit from the experienced gained there? Various principles, conditions and times determine the context in which gmp operates. The extract included herein from the gmp portfolio draws parallels between current domestic and international projects, while supplemental references to earlier buildings offer a look back at the office's development.
The requirements confronting our workplaces have recently undergone a dramatic transformation. Constantly shifting workspace populations and varying uses of workspace call for flexible spatial structures, and so do new professions and innovative working methods. The plannung of workspaces is influenced by the digitalization of our storage media as well as by new materials and building technologies. And yet for all the importance of flexibility and technology, the ultimate focus isstill on human beings. How, then can the multilayered concepts of indoor climate, lighting, acoustics, and ergonomics be reconciled with spatial structures that lend themselves to a variety of uses? In keeping with the typological approach of the series, this volume of the series In Detail presents the various work environments organized according to use. The focus throughout is on the successful interplay between technical standards, organizational structures, and human needs.
A disused power station is converted into a cultural centre, an old barn is made into a residential house. All around us we encounter buildings whose original purpose has rendered them obsolete, and which now offer space for new uses. The construction and building requirements confronting the architect are as varied and individual as the buildings themselves. This publication examines a wide range of realized examples, highlighting successful and innovative solutions, from the rehabilitation of preserved monuments to the renovation or renewal of existing buildings, from the reuse of a gothic monastery or the former industrial buildings of Fiat Lingotto to the renovation of structures made of pre-cast concrete panels. Introductory essays by specialist authors examine the economical, technical, historical aspects of the topic, and the projects presented are documented fully with illustrations, plans and details which have been specially produced by the editorial department of DETAIL.
A new generation is shaping China's architecture In recent years, a refreshingly unconventional architectural scene - outside the mainstream - has established itself in China. Its representatives, many of whom were trained in the West, are known for their sensitive handling of space, light, and material, and by their engagement with context and their own tradition. Since Wang Shu, one of the most important representatives of the profession, won the Pritzker Prize, international professionals have become more aware of China's new architecture. Twenty fascinating examples of different building typologies-many with social relevance - as well as an introductory essay illustrate current building activities and provide an insight into the cultural and architectonic influences. An introduction to China's current architectural scene Conversation with Pritzker Prize winner Wang Shu 20 fascinating projects by about 15 leading architects Also availabel in German
Unconventional concepts for reusing existing buildings economical, ecological and of historical / cultural value."

Despite a growing trend towards sharing, and an increasing number of single family households combined with a growing need for flexibility, the individual single family home remains an extremely popular choice. In addition to following building guidelines, private single family homes are also expected to fulfil high standards when it comes to energy, and often cost efficiency. Nevertheless, they continue to provide considerable scope for architects and designers. Best of DETAIL: Single-Family Homes brings together a collection of relevant highlights from DETAIL. The publication is made up of theoretical articles and a comprehensive section containing examples of projects which provide unique insights into the various applications of wood, concrete or masonry in a range of passive houses, bungalows, double- and semi-detached houses, and villas with swimming pools, from the simple to the luxurious. What these projects have in common is an ambitious aesthetic quality, which can be summed up as good architecture, providing readers with a great deal of inspiration and constructive solutions for their own practice.

The idea of designing, planning and building as an inseparable process The idea of "Total Architecture", as described by Ove Arup in his vision of design, continues to serve as the maxim for the globally operating engineering firm ARUP and its Building Engineering Department. Drawing on selected projects from recent years, this second volume in the new DETAIL engineering series shows how future-oriented and sustainable civil engineering can be combined with this ideal of a holistic design process - always with the aim of achieving perfect unity of strength and elegance in every structure. The focus is placed on the different processes that have accompanied the presented construction projects. Connections are shown between the individual buildings whose synergies are pursued in an exemplary fashion. The remarkable building projects reveal what continues to drive and inspire the engineers at ARUP to this day: a passion for pioneering work. ARUP over the course of time Process descriptions from the perspective of the involved architects, engineers and planners From supporting structures to light design and building services to future-oriented civil engineering Interdisciplinary thinking, planning and realization "Total Architecture": comprehensive management of building projects, from the initial designs right through to construction
