Stars are the fundamental observable constituents of the Universe.
They are the first objects we see in the night sky, they dominate
the light produced in our own and other galaxies, and
nucleosynthesis in stars produces all the elements heavier than
helium. A knowledge of stars and their evolution is vital to
understand other astrophysical objects from accreting black holes
and galaxies to the Universe itself. The structure of a star can be
described mathematically by differential equations derived from the
principles of hydrodynamics, electromagnetic theory,
thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, atomic and nuclear physics. The
basic equations of a spherical star are derived in detail at an
accessible level. The topics discussed include modes of energy
transport, the equation of state, the physics of the opacity
sources and the nuclear reactions. Attention is also given to the
virial theorem, polytropic gas spheres and homology principles and
the procedure for numerical solution of the equations is outlined.
This book tracks the evolution of stars from their main-sequence
evolution through the exhaustion of various nuclear fuels to the
end points of evolution and also introduces the topic of
interacting binary stars. The aim is to take the reader from the
essential underlying physical principles to the doors to current
research on stellar interiors.
This is the first volume in a new series Africa: Policies for
Prosperity. For the first time in more than a generation, sustained
economic growth has been achieved across the continent - despite
the downturn in global economic fortunes since 2008 - and in many
countries these gains have been realized through policy reforms
driven by the decisive leadership of a new generation of economic
policymakers. The process of reform is continuous, however, and the
challenge currently facing this new generation is how to harness
these favourable gains in macroeconomic stability and turn them
into a coherent strategy for sustainable growth and poverty
reduction over the coming decades.
These challenges are substantial and encompass the broad remit of
economic policy. Each volume in this series brings leading scholars
into the policy arena to examine these challenges and to lay out,
in a rigorous but accessible manner, key challenges and policy
options facing policymakers on the continent.
This first volume on Kenya explores the challenges facing an
economy standing at a crossroads. Kenya has experienced a period of
high and sustained growth since the mid 1990s, growth which
involved economic transformation away from a heavy reliance on
traditional economic activities towards an emerging manufacturing
economy. But this process, and the economic and social stability
that had come to characterize Kenya, have been severely tested by
the post-election violence of 2008. Restoring equitable growth and
sustaining the structural transformation of the economy is
essential if Kenya is to leave this dark period behind.
The chapters in this volume address the key issues that will face
economic policy makers in the coming years. They cover the
conventional but central question of finance and macroeconomic
management, but also much deeper structural issues of trade,
employment generation and education; of land policy, migration and
urbanization; and the fiscal challenges facing an ageing but
increasingly urbanized (and increasingly affluent) society.

instructions and detailed photography by master chef Christophe
Adam ideal for anyone looking to broaden their repertoire and
expand the possibilities of cooking and baking with apples. Adam

Zambia is a landlocked mineral dependent country in Southern Africa
whose history is intimately entwined with the copper mining
industry. Having gained Independence from Britain in 1964 at the
height of a copper boom, the country experienced a slow and painful
economic decline over the next quarter century. However, following
a traumatic and protracted process of economic adjustment through
the 1990s and early 2000s, Zambia's economic potential is now
better than it has been at any time since Independence. This book,
which contains a set of rigorous but accessible essays by a range
of Zambian and international scholars, seeks to examine the
challenges and opportunities that currently face Zambian
policymakers as they seek to harness the country's valuable natural
assets to broad-based and sustainable economic growth over the
coming decades. Written in a non-technical manner by leading
scholars in the field, the chapters address key challenges in the
areas of natural resource management, agriculture, trade,
employment and migration, education, finance, and investment. This
is the second volume in the Africa: Policies for Prosperity series
following on from the successful first volume on Kenya.

Intensely lyrical and unabashedly sensual, Piero Bellanova's
Bombarded Naples Sings is a masterpiece of Italian Futurist
literature. The final volume to appear under the movement's
illustrious 'Edizioni Futuriste di Poesia' imprint, it was a
product of Futurism's concluding (and least studied) phase,
extending from Italy's entry into World War Two in 1940 to the
death of the movement's leader, F. T. Marinetti, four years later.
First published in August 1943 - between the fall of Mussolini's
Fascist regime in July, and the invasion of the Italian mainland by
Allied troops that September - it's been seen as an attempt "to
construct an epic of everyday life by means of a first-hand account
of the war". However, the ultimate purpose of this frequently
moving work appears to have been of a consolatory, 'spiritual'
nature, offering a means by which Bellanova and his readers might,
temporarily, "escape the terrible devastation of our adored Italy
through Art". With its elegiac tone and precise imagistic language,
Bombarded Naples Sings challenges stereotypical notions as to the
grandiloquent, florid and aggressive nature of late Futurist poetry
- typically characterized as little more than crude propaganda -
addressing such themes as love, friendship and the beauty of the
natural world This book is the first English translation of
Bellanova's 1943 anthology. The work and it's contextualizing
introduction will give readers an insight into the themes,
preoccupations and stylistic character of late Futurist poetry

Politics in Manitoba is the first comprehensive review of the
Manitoba party system that combines history and contemporary public
opinion data to reveal the political and voter trends that have
shaped the province of Manitoba over the past 130 years. Written by
Christopher Adams, Research Director at the national public opinion
research firm Probe Research, Politics in Manitoba details the
histories of each of the three major provincial parties, the
Progressive Conservatives, the Liberals, and the New Democratic
Party, from 1870 to 2007. He looks in particular at the enduring
influence of political geography and political culture, as well as
the impact of leadership, campaign strategies, organizational
resources, and the media on voter preferences. Adams also presents
here for the first time public opinion data based on more than
25,000 interviews with Manitobans conducted between 1999 and 2007.
He analyses voter age, gender, income, education, and geographic
location to determine how Manitobans vote. In the process Adams
dispels some commonly held beliefs about party supporters and
identifies recurring themes in voter behavior.
These twelve essays constitute a groundbreaking volume of new work
prepared by leading scholars in the fields of history,
anthropology, constitutional law, political science, and sociology,
who identify the many facets of what it means to be Metis in Canada
today. After the Powley decision in 2003, Metis people were no
longer conceptually limited to the historical boundaries of the fur
trade in Canada. Key ideas explored in this collection include
identity, rights, and issues of governance, politics, and
economics. The book will be of great interest to scholars in
political science and native studies, the legal community, public
administrators, government policy advisors, and people seeking to
better understand the Metis past and present. Contributors:
Christopher Adams, Gloria Jane Bell, Glen Campbell, Gregg Dahl,
Janique Dubois, Tom Flanagan, Liam J. Haggarty, Laura-Lee Kearns,
Darren O'Toole, Jeremy Patzer, Ian Peach, Siomonn P. Pulla, Kelly
