Antonio Pedro Mesquita, Simon Noriega-Olmos, Christopher John Ignatius Shields
R3,762 Discovery Miles 37 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The philosophical and philological study of Aristotle fragments and lost works has fallen somewhat into the background since the 1960's. This is regrettable considering the different and innovative directions the study of Aristotle has taken in the last decades. This collection of new peer-reviewed essays applies the latest developments and trends of analysis, criticism, and methodology to the study of Aristotle's fragments. The individual essays use the fragments as tools of interpretation, shed new light on different areas of Aristotle philosophy, and lay bridges between Aristotle's lost and extant works. The first part shows how Aristotle frames parts of his own understanding of Philosophy in his published, 'popular' work. The second part deals with issues of philosophical interpretation in Aristotle's extant works which can be illuminated by fragments of his lost works. The philosophical issues treated in this section range from Theology to Natural Science, Psychology, Politics, and Poetics. As a whole, the book articulates a new approach to Aristotle's lost works, by providing a reassessment and new methodological explorations of the fragments.

Credo Credit Crisis - Speculations on Faith and Money (Hardcover): Aidan Tynan, Laurent Milesi, Christopher John Muller Credo Credit Crisis - Speculations on Faith and Money (Hardcover)
Aidan Tynan, Laurent Milesi, Christopher John Muller
R3,330 Discovery Miles 33 300 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Money facilitates the rites and rituals we perform in everyday life. More than a mere medium of exchange or a measure of value, it is the primary means by which we manifest a faith unique to our secular age. But what happens when individual belief (credo, 'I' believe) and the systems into which it is bound (credit, 'it' believes) enter into crisis? Where did the sacredness of money come from, and does it have a future? Why do we talk about debt and repayment in overtly moral terms? How should a theological critique of capitalism proceed today? With the effects of the 2008 economic crises continuing to be felt across the world, this volume brings together some of the most important contemporary voices in philosophy, literature, theology, and critical and cultural theory together in one volume to assert the need to interrogate and broaden the terms of the theological critique of capitalism.

Prometheanism - Technology, Digital Culture and Human Obsolescence (Hardcover): Christopher John Muller Prometheanism - Technology, Digital Culture and Human Obsolescence (Hardcover)
Christopher John Muller
R4,167 R2,929 Discovery Miles 29 290 Save R1,238 (30%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Gunther Anders's prolific philosophy of technology is undergoing a major revival but has never been translated into English. Prometheanism mobilises Anders's pragmatic thought and current trends in critical theory to rethink the constellations of power that are configuring themselves around our increasingly "smart" machines. The book offers a comprehensive introduction to Anders's philosophy of technology with an annotated translation of his visionary essay 'On Promethean Shame', part of The Obsolescence of Human Beings 1 published in 1956.The essay analyses feelings of curtailment, obsolescence and solitude that become manifest whilst we interact with machines. When technological solutions begin to make humans look embarrassingly limited and flawed, new emotional vulnerabilities are exposed. These need to be thought, because our wavering confidence leaves us unprotected in an ever more (un)transparent, connected yet fractured world.

The Science of Right in Leibniz's Moral and Political Philosophy (Hardcover, New): Christopher Johns The Science of Right in Leibniz's Moral and Political Philosophy (Hardcover, New)
Christopher Johns
R3,891 Discovery Miles 38 910 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Studies of Gottfried Leibniz's moral and political philosophy typically focus on metaphysical perfection, happiness, or love. In this new reading of Leibniz, Christopher Johns shows that it is based on a 'science of right'. Based on the deontic concepts of jus (right) and obligation, this science of right is established in Leibniz's early writings on jurisprudence and depended on throughout several of his major late writings. Johns shows that the moral rightness of an action is grounded in the rights and obligations derived from the agent's capacity for freedom. This new interpretation of Leibniz's moral philosophy compares Leibniz's positions with Grotius, Pufendorf, Hobbes, Locke, and Kant. Providing a comprehensive examination of Leibniz's most important writings on natural right, John's argues that Leibniz, properly understood, provides a compelling account of the grounds of morality and of political institutions-an account relevant to present philosophical debates.

Rethinking Management Education (Hardcover): Robert French, Christopher John Grey Rethinking Management Education (Hardcover)
Robert French, Christopher John Grey
R4,950 Discovery Miles 49 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

At a time of ever-increasing debate about the nature and adequacy of orthodox approaches to management education, particularly in the new postindustrial, postmodern era, this innovative volume brings together the work of authors actively engaged in reflecting on, and developing new forms of education in the field of management. Rethinking Management Education begins by stating that it is important to critique and analyze such a significant and contemporary entity as management, and that management education--since it plays such a crucial role in producing and reproducing managerial practices--is the primary site for such interrogation. After contrasting dominant utilitarian and functionalist conceptions of management education with various alternatives, the contributors argue for a need for a dialogical pluralism whereby participants are introduced to the full diversity of appropriate perspectives and debates. Throughout the book, there is a focus on the implications of problematizing management knowledge so as to facilitate alternative and critical modalities of teaching and learning. In this context, management is seen not only as a bundle of skills and techniques, but as a complex social, political, and moral practice. Rethinking Management Education is full of insightful and unique ideas. Containing the most significant developments in education, this book is a must for all academics, students, and professionals in management.

National Parks Forever - Fifty Years of Fighting and a Case for Independence (Paperback): Jonathan B. Jarvis, T. Destry Jarvis National Parks Forever - Fifty Years of Fighting and a Case for Independence (Paperback)
Jonathan B. Jarvis, T. Destry Jarvis; Contributions by Christopher Johns
R882 R753 Discovery Miles 7 530 Save R129 (15%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Two leaders of the National Park Service provide a front-row seat to the disastrous impact of partisan politics over the past fifty years-and offer a bold vision for the parks' future. The US National Parks, what environmentalist and historian Wallace Stegner called America's "best idea," are under siege. Since 1972, partisan political appointees in the Department of the Interior have offered two conflicting views of the National Park Service (NPS): one vision emphasizes preservation and science-based decision-making, and another prioritizes economic benefits and privatization. These politically driven shifts represent a pernicious, existential threat to the very future of our parks. For the past fifty years, brothers Jonathan B. and T. Destry Jarvis have worked both within and outside NPS as leaders and advocates. National Parks Forever interweaves their two voices to show how our parks must be protected from those who would open them to economic exploitation, while still allowing generations to explore and learn in them. Their history also details how Congress and administration appointees have used budget and staffing cuts to sabotage NPS's ability to manage the parks and even threatened their existence. Drawing on their experience, Jarvis and Jarvis make a bold and compelling proposal: that it is time for NPS to be removed from the Department of the Interior and made an independent agency, similar to the Smithsonian Institution, giving NPS leaders the ability to manage park resources and plan our parks' protection, priorities, and future.

Thus the collected papers in this volume set out to discover important dimensions of the aesthetic in medieval literature. In this endeavour they inquire into the relationship of aesthetics and religion as well as into that between aesthetics and rhetoric, and they search for relevant concepts and modes of presentation in the literary texts themselves. These various components combine to form an a ~aesthetics of alteritya (TM).

The first book to tell the whole story of SNAP and to explain why all Americans should support it.   The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is the nation’s largest government effort for helping low-income Americans obtain an adequate diet. How did SNAP, formerly the food stamp program, evolve from a Depression-era effort to use up surplus goods into America’s foundational food assistance program? And how does SNAP survive? Incisive and original, Why SNAP Works is the first book to provide a comprehensive history and evaluation of the nation’s most important food insecurity and poverty alleviation effort.   Everyone has an opinion about SNAP, not all of them positive, but its benefits are felt broadly and across party lines. Christopher Bosso makes a clear, nuanced, and impassioned case for protecting this unique food program, exploring its history and breaking down the facts for readers across the political spectrum. Why SNAP Works is an essential book for anyone concerned about food access, poverty, and the “welfare system” in the United States.

This is the first full account in English of the archaeological material from early Rome and the surrounding region of Latium, from the Late Bronze Age down to the end of the sixth century BC. The book sets for the first time the region of Latium in its proper context as the hinterland of Rome, and as participating in the major developments in central Italy, including Campania and Etruria, and as a witness to the radical transformation of the Mediterranean as a whole in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages. Dr Smith presents the most recent evidence from the whole region as well as Rome itself, and discusses the reliability and usefulness of the literary accounts of early Latium, as well as applying theoretical models of regional economy and archaeological interpretation.

The Politics of South India 1920-1937 (Paperback): Christopher John Baker The Politics of South India 1920-1937 (Paperback)
Christopher John Baker
R1,269 Discovery Miles 12 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The interwar years witnessed great changes in the political life of India, with the establishment of new governmental institutions, the emergence of political movements based on class, caste and ideology, and the rapid expansion of the nationalist campaign. This book looks at the complex of political changes during this crucial and formative period in the Madras Presidency, the largest but often the most neglected province of British India. Among the many strands of political life and behaviour which Dr Baker studies are the non-Brahman movement, peasant agitations, caste movements and the rise of the Indian National Congress to a position of undisputed primacy in the region. Making use of hitherto unresearched materials Dr Baker attempts the first overall study of the political process and the dynamics of political change in the province. The book may also be seen as a case-study of political change in a late-colonial society.
