Ecosystem Function in Heterogeneous Landscapes (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): Gary M. Lovett, Clive G. Jones, Monica G. Turner,... Ecosystem Function in Heterogeneous Landscapes (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
Gary M. Lovett, Clive G. Jones, Monica G. Turner, Kathleen C. Weathers
R4,098 Discovery Miles 40 980 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The study of ecosystems, fundamental to ecology, has been complemented by the growing field of landscape ecology. Ecosystem Function in Heterogeneous Landscapes addresses how interactions among ecosystems affect the functioning of individual ecosystems and the larger landscape. This groundbreaking synthesis unites ecosystem ecology's knowledge of system function with landscape ecology's knowledge of spatial structure.

Practical concerns about scaling up from individual ecosystems to larger landscapes require an understanding of how networks of interacting ecosystems function together. The book elucidates the challenges faced by ecosystem scientists working in spatially heterogeneous systems, relevant conceptual approaches used in other disciplines and in different ecosystem types, and the importance of spatial heterogeneity in conservation resource management. The distinguished authors discuss how how much heterogeneity needs to be taken into account for specific types of scientific and management issues. Their chapters cover the spectrum from proposing novel conceptual approaches to detailing the practical implications of heterogeneous landscapes for fire management, water management and conservation planning.

Ecological Understanding - The Nature of Theory and the Theory of Nature (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Steward T.A. Pickett, Jurek... Ecological Understanding - The Nature of Theory and the Theory of Nature (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Steward T.A. Pickett, Jurek Kolasa, Clive G. Jones
R1,459 Discovery Miles 14 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This widely anticipated revision of the groundbreaking book, Ecological Understanding, updates this crucial sourcebook of contemporary philosophical insights for practicing ecologists and graduate students in ecology and environmental studies. The second edition contains new ecological examples, an expanded array of conceptual diagrams and illustrations, new text boxes summarizing important points or defining key terms, and new reference to philosophical issues and controversies. Although the first edition was recognized for its clarity, this revision takes the opportunity to make the exposition of complex topics still clearer to readers without a philosophical background.
Readers will gain an understanding of the goals of science, the structure of theory, the kinds of theory relevant to ecology, the way that theory changes, what constitutes objectivity in contemporary science, and the role of paradigms and frameworks for synthesis within ecology and in integration with other disciplines. Finally, how theory can inform and anchor the public use of ecological knowledge in civic debates is laid out. This new edition refines the understanding of how the structure and change of theory can improve the growth and application of one of the 21st century's key sciences.
-Explains the philosophical basis of ecology in plain English
-Contains chapter overviews and summaries
-Text boxes highlight key points, examples, or controversies
-Diagrams explain structure and development of theory, and integration
-Evaluates and relates paradgims in ecology
-Illustrates philosophical issues with classic and new ecological research

Linking Species & Ecosystems (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): Clive G. Jones, John H. Lawton Linking Species & Ecosystems (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
Clive G. Jones, John H. Lawton
R4,230 Discovery Miles 42 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is the first volume devoted to the integration of population and ecosystem ecology--an approach that offers vast potential for improving our understanding of the complexities of nature and the management of environmental problems. The editors, Clive Jones and John Lawton, work at the Institute of Ecosystem Studies in New York and the Natural Environment Research Council Centre for Population Biology in England, respectively. They have brought together a distinguished group of experts to explore diverse aspects of linking species and ecosystem perspectives: theoretical, empirical and pragmatic including: *processes that range from a local to a planetary scale *the role of organisms as ecosystem engineers *the use of ecological flow chains to link population and ecosystem processes *numerous examples of the influence of species on ecosystem processes and vice versa *a unique blend of problems and processes drawn from marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems *problems of species redundancy in ecosystem processes *stoichiometric constraints on species interactions; *scaling and aggregation problems. The book establishes conceptual frameworks for the rigorous study of interactions between species and ecosystems, it points to still-unanswered questions, and it identifies future research directions. Integration of ecology with its implications for teaching, research and society are central to the book. This pioneering volume will be an indispensable resource for ecology researchers, students, and environmental managers and will stimulate debate on the future integration of the field.

Linking Species & Ecosystems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995): Clive G. Jones, John H. Lawton Linking Species & Ecosystems (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1995)

I was asked to introduce this volume by examining "why a knowledge of ecosys tem functioning can contribute to understanding species activities, dynamics, and assemblages." I have found it surprisingly difficult to address this topic. On the one hand, the answer is very simple and general: because all species live in ecosystems, they are part of and dependent on ecosystem processes. It is impossible to understand the abundance and distribution of populations and the species diversity and composition of communities without a knowledge of their abiotic and biotic environments and of the fluxes of energy and mat ter through the ecosystems of which they are a part. But everyone knows this. It is what ecology is all about (e.g., Likens, 1992). It is why the discipline has retained its integrity and thrived, despite a sometimes distressing degree of bickering and chauvinism among its various subdisciplines: physiological, be havioral, population, community, and ecosystem ecology."

This groundbreaking work connects the knowledge of system function developed in ecosystem ecology with landscape ecology's knowledge of spatial structure. The book elucidates the challenges faced by ecosystem scientists working in spatially heterogeneous systems, relevant conceptual approaches used in other disciplines and in different ecosystem types, and the importance of spatial heterogeneity in conservation resource management.
