Trends in Antarctic Terrestrial and Limnetic Ecosystems - Antarctica as a Global Indicator (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): D. M... Trends in Antarctic Terrestrial and Limnetic Ecosystems - Antarctica as a Global Indicator (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
D. M Bergstrom, P. Convey, A.H.L. Huiskes
R4,437 Discovery Miles 44 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Antarctic provides a suite of scenarios useful for investigating the range of climate change effects on terrestrial and limnetic biota. The international SCAR programme RiSCC (Regional Sensitivity to Climate Change in Antarctic Terrestrial and Limnetic Ecosystems) is investigating these scenarios with the goals of (1) understanding the likely response of Antarctic biota to changing climates, and (2) contributing to the development of broadly applicable theory concerning interactions between climate change, indigenous and introduced species, and ecosystem functioning. The programme draws upon both new and existing data.

The purpose of the book is to provide, based on the most up to date knowledge, a synthesis of the likely effects of climate change on Antarctic terrestrial and limnetic ecosystems and, thereby, to contribute to their management and conservation, based on the information.

"The book is described as "a milestone as it has collected the most actual facts about the Antarctic region and allows us to look at the phenomenon from physical and biological perspectives. It is a 'must' for all who are concerned about our environment." SCAR newsletter: Issue 10, April 2007

The Biology of Polar Regions (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition): D.N. Thomas, G. E. Fogg, P. Convey, C. H. Fritsen, J.-M. Gili, R... The Biology of Polar Regions (Hardcover, 2nd Revised edition)
D.N. Thomas, G. E. Fogg, P. Convey, C. H. Fritsen, J.-M. Gili, …
R4,941 Discovery Miles 49 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

There is now an increased awareness of the importance of polar regions in the Earth system, as well as their vulnerability to anthropogenic derived change, including of course global climate change. This new edition offers a concise but comprehensive introduction to polar ecology and has been thoroughly revised and updated throughout, providing expanded coverage of marine ecosystems and the impact of humans. It incorporates a detailed comparison of the Arctic and Antarctic systems, with a particular emphasis on the effects of climate change, and describes marine, freshwater, glacial, and terrestrial habitats. This breadth of coverage is unique in the polar biology literature. As with other titles in the Biology of Habitats Series, particular emphasis is placed on the organisms that dominate these extreme environments although pollution, conservation and experimental aspects are also considered. This accessible text is suitable for both senior undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in polar ecology, often as part of a wider marine biology degree programme. It will also be of value and use to the many professional ecologists and conservation biologists requiring a concise overview of the topic.
