In Exiled Home, Susan Bibler Coutin recounts the experiences of
Salvadoran children who migrated with their families to the United
States during the 1980-1992 civil war. Because of their youth and
the violence they left behind, as well as their uncertain legal
status in the United States, many grew up with distant memories of
El Salvador and a profound sense of disjuncture in their adopted
homeland. Through interviews in both countries, Coutin examines how
they sought to understand and overcome the trauma of war and
displacement through such strategies as recording community
histories, advocating for undocumented immigrants, forging new
relationships with the Salvadoran state, and, for those deported
from the United States, reconstructing their lives in El Salvador.
In focusing on the case of Salvadoran youth, Coutin's nuanced
analysis shows how the violence associated with migration can be
countered through practices that recuperate historical memory while
also reclaiming national membership.
The 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was
supposed to be a stepping stone, a policy innovation announced by
the White House designed to put pressure on Congress for a broader,
lasting set of legislative changes. Those changes never
materialized, and the people who hoped to benefit from them have
been forced to navigate a tense and contradictory policy landscape
ever since, haunted by these unfulfilled promises. Legal Phantoms
tells their story. After Congress failed to pass a comprehensive
immigration bill in 2013, President Obama pivoted in 2014 to
supplementing DACA with a deferred action program (known as DAPA)
for the parents of citizens and lawful permanent residents and a
DACA expansion (DACA+) in 2014. But challenges from Republican-led
states prevented even these programs from going into effect.
Interviews with would-be applicants, immigrant-rights advocates,
and government officials reveal how such failed immigration-reform
efforts continue to affect not only those who had hoped to benefit,
but their families, communities, and the country in which they have
made an uneasy home. Out of the ashes of these lost dreams, though,
people find their own paths forward through uncharted legal
territory with creativity and resistance.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed conference
proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Biomedical
Simulation (ISBMS) which was held in Strasbourg, France, in October
2014. Biomedical modeling and simulation are at the center stage of
worldwide efforts to understand and replicate the behavior and
function of the human organism. Large scale initiatives such as the
Physiome Project, Virtual Physiological Human and Blue Brain
Project aim to develop advanced computational models that will
facilitate the understanding of the integrative function of cells,
organs, and organisms, with the ultimate goal of delivering truly
personalized medicine. At the same time, progress in modeling,
numerical techniques and haptics has enabled more complex and
interactive simulations. The 27 revised full papers (including 16
regular and 11 short papers) were carefully selected from 45
submissions and cover topics such as training systems and haptics,
physics-based registration, vascular modeling and simulation, image
and simulation, modeling, surgical planning, analysis,
characterization and validation.
In this text atlas of neuroimaging the author provides a review of
the pathologies and diseases that affect the head, brain, skull
base, face, spine, and cord. The case presentation format of this
handbook covers the important clinical and neuropathological
aspects of the disease process. The book contains 350 selected
pathologies, represented in 750 high resolution MR images. It also
covers the aspects of neurological disorders and the fundamental
aspects of the physics of magnetic resonance, spectroscopy, as well
as a review of MR techniques. Given its scope, this book is of
interest to radiologists involved in MR interpretation,
neuroradiologists seeking an up-to-date review, and all workers in
the field of diagnostic and therapeutic neurology.
To celebrate its 5th edition, the International Symposium on
Biomedical S- ulation (ISBMS) was organized in conjunction with the
International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH). IMSH is
the premier simulation in heal- care meeting and largestsingle
gathering of clinicians, educators, administrators and other
simulation stakeholders. This unique link-up aimed at bringing -
gether simulation users with those involved in its scienti?c and
technological developments in order to foster closer interaction.
The joint meeting was held in Phoenix, Arizona during January
23-24, 2010. Biomedical modeling and simulation are at the center
stage of worldwide e?orts to understand and replicate the behavior
and function of the human organism. The Physiome Project and
Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) i- tiative aim to develop
advanced computational models that will facilitate the
understanding of the integrative function of cells, organs, and

This book contains the written contributions to the International
Symposium on th Medical Simulation (ISMS'04) held in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, USA on June 17 th and June 18 , 2004. Manuscripts
are organized around five thematic sections relating to the
multidisciplinary field of Medical Simulation: Soft Tissue
Properties and Modeling, Haptic Rendering, Real-Time Deformable
Models, Anatomical Modeling, and Development Frameworks. The
objectives of the symposium are to gather researchers to present
their most recent, and promising work, to highlight research trends
and foster dialogue and debates among participants. Live
demonstrations are also included at the meeting, but cannot be
included in this volume. Finally, to address questions about areas
for improvement and future directions of the field, we organized a
panel of experts including technical, medical and educational
representatives. This event continues the successful symposium
organized by Herve Delingette and Nicholas Ayache, in France in
June 2003. At that meeting we agreed that it would be beneficial
for the community to have an annual gathering for the medical
simulation community where researchers can exchange ideas and share
their work in this emerging field. ISMS'04 is co-organized by CIMIT
/ Harvard Medical School and Rutgers University.

Documenting Impossible Realities explores the limitations of
conventional accounts through which belonging is documented,
focusing on the experiences of adoptees, deportees, migrants, and
other exilic populations. Susan Bibler Coutin and Barbara Yngvesson
speak to the current historical moment in which the dichotomy
between an "above ground" inhabited by dominant groups and an
"underground" to which unauthorized immigrants, political exiles,
and transnational adoptees are relegated cannot be sustained. This
dichotomy was made possible by the illusion that some people do not
belong, that some forms of kin are not real, or that certain ways
of knowing do not count. To examine accounts that challenge such
illusions, Coutin and Yngvesson focus on the spaces between groups,
where difference is constituted and where the potential for new
forms of relationship may be realized. By juxtaposing and moving
between entangled realities and modes of expression, Documenting
Impossible Realities conveys the emotional experience of
oscillating between being here and gone, legitimate and treated as
counterfeit.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 4th International
Conference on Information Processing in Computer-Assisted
Interventions IPCAI 2013, held in Heidelberg, Germany, on June 26,
2013. The 11 papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected
from 20 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections
on simulation, neurosurgical interventions, ultrasound guided
interventions, and image guided interventions.
This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923. This book
may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages,
poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the
original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. We
believe this work is culturally important, and despite the
imperfections, have elected to bring it back into print as part of
our continuing commitment to the preservation of printed works
worldwide. We appreciate your understanding of the imperfections in
the preservation process, and hope you enjoy this valuable book.
"Your son has learning difficulties." This, we were told when our
son, Robin, was 2 1/2 years old. The book describes our
experiences, good and bad, all through his childhood and into
adulthood. How his behaviour varied from his siblings', how friends
and family reacted. And about what we accomplished and where we
failed. The idea of writing this book was that it might be useful
for parents in the same situation we faced fifty years ago. We, my
wife, Jane, and I benefitted by meeting and learning from the
experiences of other parents. So, here it is. I sincerely hope it
will help you in some way in the tremendous task you may be facing.
