Women everywhere marvel at those "good girls" in Scripture - Sarah, Mary, Esther - but on most days, that's not who they see when they look in the mirror. Most women (if they're honest) see the selfishness of Sapphira or the deception of Delilah. They catch a glimpse of Jezebel's take-charge pride or Eve's disastrous disobedience. Like Bathsheba, Herodias, and the rest, today's modern woman is surrounded by temptations, exhausted by the demands of daily living, and burdened by her own desires.
So what's a good girl to do? Learn from their lives, says beloved humor writer Liz Curtis Higgs, and by God's grace, choose a better path. In Bad Girls Of The Bible, Higgs offers a unique and clear-sighted approach to understanding those "other women" in Scripture, combining a contemporary retelling of their stories with
a solid, verse-by-verse study of their mistakes and what lessons women today can learn from them.
Whether they were "Bad to the Bone," "Bad for a Season, but Not Forever" or only "Bad for a Moment," these infamous sisters show women how "not" to handle the challenges of life. With her trademark humor and encouragement, Liz Curtis Higgs teaches us how to avoid their tragic mistakes and joyfully embrace grace.
The Atlas of X-Linked Intellectual Disability Syndromes is a
comprehensive and up-to-date summary of the clinically distinctive
disorders caused by genes on the X chromosome. Clinical and
laboratory data on 150 syndromes are presented in a concise and
consistent manner. Each syndrome is defined and information is
provided on somatic features, growth and development, neurological
signs, cognitive performance, imaging and other laboratory
findings, and when possible, the nature and localization of the
responsible gene. Craniofacial and other somatic findings are
extensively illustrated. A differential matrix accompanies each
syndrome description to assist the reader in identifying other
X-linked syndromes with overlapping features. Individual syndrome
entries are supplemented with nineteen appendices that identify
syndromes with common features and provide the location or mapping
limits and function of the responsible genes. The authors have
extensive experience in the clinical and laboratory delineation of
X-linked intellectual disability. They have described new
syndromes, regionally mapped disease loci on the X chromosome, and
identified the genes responsible for X-linked syndromes.
This first-ever biography of American painter Grace Hartigan traces
her rise from virtually self-taught painter to art-world fame, her
plunge into obscurity after leaving New York to marry a scientist
in Baltimore, and her constant efforts to reinvent her style and
subject matter. Along the way, there were multiple affairs, four
troubled marriages, a long battle with alcoholism, and a chilly
relationship with her only child. Attempting to channel her vague
ambitions after an early marriage, Grace struggled to master the
basics of drawing in night-school classes. She moved to New York in
her early twenties and befriended Willem de Kooning, Jackson
Pollock, and other artists who were pioneering Abstract
Expressionism. Although praised for the coloristic brio of her
abstract paintings, she began working figuratively, a move that was
much criticized but ultimately vindicated when the Museum of Modern
Art purchased her painting The Persian Jacket in 1953. By the
mid-fifties, she freely combined abstract and representational
elements. Grace-who signed her paintings "Hartigan"- was a
full-fledged member of the "men's club" that was the 1950s art
scene. Featured in Time, Newsweek, Life, and Look, she was the only
woman in MoMA's groundbreaking 12 Americans exhibition in 1956, and
the youngest artist-and again, only woman-in The New American
Painting, which toured Europe in 1958-1959. Two years later she
moved to Baltimore, where she became legendary for her signature
tough-love counsel to her art school students. Grace continued to
paint throughout her life, seeking-for better or worse-something
truer and fiercer than beauty.

In the early 20th century, there was no better example of a classic
American downtown than Los Angeles. Since World War II, Los
Angeles's Historic Core has been "passively preserved," with most
of its historic buildings left intact. Recent renovations of the
area for residential use and the construction of Disney Hall and
the Staples Center are shining a new spotlight on its many
pre-1930s Beaux Arts, Art Deco, and Spanish Baroque buildings.

Branko Copic (1915-1984) was first published in Yugoslavia in 1951.
Born an ethnic Serb, he was one of the former Yugoslavia's best
known and most popular writers for adults and children. This was a
story that could be recited by almost every Yugoslav adult and
child since it first appeared. Despite the recent Balkan wars it
has survived to become part of the culture of the newly formed
republics of the early 1990s and the book still remains on the
Croatian school curriculum.

The whole of Scripture, Old Testament and New, is being published
in a single volume, featuring the beautiful Revised Standard Version
Second Catholic Edition (RSV2CE) translation along with introductions,
outlines, and explanatory notes for each biblical book, extensive cross
references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and an array of
visual and educational aids to bring the message of Scripture into
clear focus for Catholic readers.
More than any other study edition of the Bible on the market, the
Ignatius Catholic Study Bible is "like a householder who brings out of
his treasure what is new and what is old" (Mt 13:52). It draws insights
from the best of modern scholarship as well as the best of the Catholic
tradition of interpretation through the ages.
It explains the historical, cultural, literary, and archaeological
background of Scripture, while at the same time looking to the Fathers,
Doctors, and Councils of the Church for insight into its theological
and spiritual teachings. The result is a veritable library of Bible
study resources, all under one cover, designed to help readers
understand the written Word of God and apply its lessons to their lives
today. It is simply the most ambitious undertaking of its kind in our
generation.

This edited book is the first to reflect on childhood obesity as a
global legal challenge. It calls for a thorough commitment to human
rights in the face of an ascendant global agri-food industry. The
book makes an original contribution to the discussion on obesity as
it considers both international economic law and human rights law
perspectives on the issue whilst also examining the relationship
between these two bodies of international law. After highlighting
the importance of a human rights-based approach to obesity
prevention, this book discusses the relevance of international
economic law to the promotion of healthier food environments. It
then examines the potential of international human rights law for
more effective regulation of the food industry, arguing for better
coordination between UN actors and more systematic reliance on
human rights tools, including: the best interests of the child
principle, human rights due diligence processes, and the imposition
of extraterritorial obligations. The concluding chapter reflects on
recurring themes and the added value of a WHO Framework Convention
on Obesity Prevention. This book will be of interest to public
health scholars, particularly those working on obesity and
non-communicable diseases, and those with a broader interest in
children's rights, human rights, international trade, investment,
consumer or food law and policy. It will also be relevant to policy
actors working to improve nutrition and public health globally.
