This volume provides an introduction to the work of Meister Eckhart
and a guide to the spiritual life.
This is unusual among the Society's volumes in not dealing with
British naval history. It prints a history of the Russian Baltic
fleet from its foundation, written in 1724 by an unidentified
Englishman, evidently a sea officer in Russian service. The author
has recently been identified as Captain John Deane - see Richard H
Warner, 'Captain John Deane: Mercenary, Diplomat and Spy', in
People of the Northern Seas, ed. Lewis R Fischer and Walter
Minchinton (St John's, Newfoundland, 1992), pp 157-173.
The Sufi phenomenon is not easy to sum up or define. This book
is concerned primarily with the Persian mystics and looks at the
history of the S?fi movement, the mystical states, fundamentals of
Persian mysticism and S?fi practices.
The author was first introduced to Persian studies when, as a
'Student Interpreter' in the Levant Consular Service, he studied
Arabic, Persian and Turkish. He realized the value of Persian
thought in any attempt to draw East and West together. This book,
first published in 1964, is the product of many years of close and
constant contact with many Persian writers and academics.
Patients with difficult airways represent a clinical conundrum for
anaesthetists. With a wide variety of presentations in both an
elective and emergency setting, all anaesthetists need to be
prepared to manage such a situation. This book consists of
real-life clinical scenarios, describing how these were managed at
the time and on reflection how their management could have been
improved. Further discussion emphasises how any associated failures
and complications could have been mitigated. Using a combination of
up-to-date knowledge, advanced technology and clinical expertise,
this book provides an invaluable resource for any specialist
managing airways in a clinical environment. This book is an
indispensable aide-mémoire for postgraduate doctors, physicians
practising in the emergency department, intensive care specialists,
anaesthesia associates and allied healthcare professionals in
managing patients with a difficult airway.

This book comprises structured questions and answers that closely
simulate the structured oral examination (SOE) format of The Royal
College of Anaesthetists' final FRCA examination. The style of exam
questions has changed over the years and this book matches the most
recent changes in this updated exam. It will consist of ten sets
(chapters) of complete SOE papers. Each SOE set (chapter) includes
one long case, three short cases and four different applied basic
science topics (anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and clinical
measurement). As this book will be presented in the format of
complete examination papers, it will enable candidates to assess
their knowledge and skills. It will also assist trainers in setting
up mock exams. With thorough revision of this book, trainees can
confidently sit their exams. The authors have been organising final
FRCA viva courses for the past five years, running four exam
preparation courses a year, attended by about 200 trainees each
year. This book includes updated knowledge based on the syllabus
and more recent questions asked in the FRCA examination. It is,
therefore, essential study material for trainees and a great
educational tool for trainers. This book will also help candidates
all over the world to pass highly competitive postgraduate
examinations in anaesthesia. It is an invaluable educational
resource for all anaesthetists.
This book covers a broad range of topics, providing trainee and
practising anaesthetists with a comprehensive source of knowledge
on applied sciences and clinical anaesthesia. The book has been
divided into six sections with various chapters serving as a
synopsis of the practice of anaesthesia. Each chapter discusses the
significance and importance of problems that can impact the
peri-operative management of the surgical patient. The case
scenarios at the end of each chapter will additionally help in
understanding the practical relevance of basic science. This book
will be an invaluable educational resource for trainee
anaesthetists and an indispensable aide-memoire for practising
anaesthetists. It is, therefore, essential study material for
trainees and a great educational tool for trainers. Medical
students and junior doctors, who are about to embark on a career in
anaesthesia or intensive care medicine, will also find the book to
be a useful companion.
This book explores how recent football fiction has negotiated the
decisive political developments in English football after the
1989/90 publication of the 'Taylor Report'. A direct response to
the 1989 Hillsborough Disaster and growing concerns of hooliganism,
the 'Taylor Report' suggested a number of measures for stricter
regulation of fan crowds. In consequence, stadiums in the top
divisions were turned into all-seated venues and were put under
CCTV surveillance. The implementation of these measures reduced
violent incidents drastically, but it also led to an unparalleled
increase in ticket prices, which in turn significantly altered the
demographics of the crowd. This development, which also enabled
football's entry into other mainstream cultural forms, changed the
game decisively. Piskurek traces patterns across prose and film to
detect how these fictions have responded to the changed
circumstances of post-Taylor football. Lending a cultural lens to
these political changes, this book is pioneering in its analysis of
football fiction as a whole, offering a fresh perspective to a
range of scholars and students interested in cultural studies,
sociology, leisure and politics.

A naval officer from a generation that could spend an average of
between 250 and 300 days a year at sea, Sir Cyprian Bridge (1839
1924) used this extensive experience and the knowledge he gained
from wide reading to become a highly respected commander, firm in
his beliefs and unafraid to voice them. In retirement he became a
vocal critic of the drive to build bigger ships, believing that
hardware should be subordinate to tactics. A regular contributor to
newspapers, he wrote articles on naval history, tactics and
strategy. This collection of articles was published in 1910, and
includes his well-known paper, first delivered in 1902, setting out
the difficulties in maintaining supplies and communications with a
fleet based far from home. This work remains relevant to naval
historians, and to those interested in how Britain maintained her
maritime supremacy into the twentieth century.
The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is a highly
reliable and valid tool for the evaluation of trainees in
anaesthesia. It enables examiners and trainers to assess a number
of competencies in an organised way. Performance in the OSCE is
considered to be a fair reflection of the level of knowledge and
skill attained during anaesthesia training. Apart from having a
wide and deep knowledge on the subject, trainees are expected to
have the capacity to demonstrate their competency in a short period
of time allotted for each station. The authors of this book have a
rich experience in successfully conducting OSCE courses in the
United Kingdom. The sample OSCE sets in the book closely simulate
the style and content of the Royal College of Anaesthetists'
examination format. The book contains 100 OSCE stations with
answers based on key practical procedures, clinical skills,
communication skills, data interpretation, anaesthetic equipment
and the management of critical incidents on a simulator. The
answers are presented thoroughly and clearly. The tutorial on the
relevant topic and additional key points at the end of each
station, together with more than 100 illustrations throughout the
book will complement the reader's overall understanding. The
marking system signifies the relevance of each question, enabling
objective assessment of knowledge and practical skills. This book
will also help candidates all over the world to pass highly
competitive postgraduate examinations in anaesthesia. It is an
invaluable educational resource for all anaesthetists.
This book uses comparative island archaeology to reinterpret a vital phase in early Aegean history. Cyprian Broodbank presents the first modern analysis of Cycladic culture, tracing the development of Neolithic and Early Bronze Age societies in these islands from first colonisation through to incorporation, three millennia later, in the world system of the Minoan palaces and the wider Near East. The archaeology of this region is rich and well documented, and allows Dr Broodbank to reformulate early Cycladic history and to deploy detailed examples that challenge established approaches to island archaeology. He shows that islanders can actively define their cultural space and environments, and that their communities are linked by complex relations to the non-insular world. This book provides fresh perspectives and challenges for island archaeologists and Mediterranean specialists.Winner of the James R. Wiseman Book Award 2003 and the Runciman Award 2001.
The single best answer format of questions is invaluable in
assessing a trainee's clinical skills and problem-solving
abilities. It allows the trainee to demonstrate application of
their knowledge to clinical practice. This book comprises six sets
of practice papers. Each set contains 30 single best answer
questions which cover topics including clinical anaesthesia, pain
and intensive care. The questions are based on the recent changes
introduced to the written part of the final FRCA examination. The
best possible answer to a given clinical scenario is substantiated
by a detailed explanation drawn from recent review articles and
textbooks in clinical anaesthesia. These questions will enable
candidates to assess their clinical knowledge and skills in
problem-solving, data interpretation and decision making. This book
is essential study material for candidates sitting postgraduate
examinations in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. It is not
only an essential guide for trainees but also an invaluable
educational resource for all anaesthetists.
Born about the year AD 200, Thascus Caecillius Cyprianus was the
scion of an ancient and noble Roman family living in North Africa.
A convert to Christianity in mid-life, Cyprian was acclaimed bishop
of Carthage during a time of intense Empire-wide persecution by the
Roman imperial authorities under the emperor Decius. In the twelve
year span between his conversion and his martyrdom in AD 258 during
the reign of Valerian, Cyprian wrote some of the most important
foundational documents of the ante-Nicene Church. This volume
contains the entirety of Saint Cyprian's writing--13 treatises and
all of his correspondence, 82 letters in all. It also includes "The
Life and Passion of Saint Cyprian" by his companion, Pontius the
Deacon, as well as the minutes of the Seventh Council of Carthage
over which Cyprian presided. His writings encompass the major
issues of his day including the Roman persecutions, the unity of
the Church, dealing with those who renounced the faith under threat
from the state (the lapsi), the Novatian heresy and the rebaptism
controversy. His correspondents included the most illustrious men
of the early Latin Church, including three Popes--Cornelius,
Stephen I, and Sixtus II. Read and cited frequently by theologians
down through the ages, Saint Cyprian's writings are of surpassing
authority and were considered works of genius "brighter than the
sun" by Saint Jerome. Aside from their obvious ecclesiastical
import, the works of Cyprian also offer a detailed and unique
glimpse into Roman society at the height of the anti-Christian
persecutions and demonstrate the growth and struggles of the early
Church during a time of intense external political pressure. Based
on the translation originally published as part of The Ante-Nicene
Fathers 1885], this new edition includes a new introduction,
updated commentary, an updated bibliography, and several new
appendices including "The Quotable Cyprian."
Single best answer multiple choice questions are considered
invaluable in assessing a trainee's ability to apply knowledge to
clinical practice. This book comprises six sets of practice papers,
each set containing 30 single best answer questions in basic
sciences applicable to the practice of anaesthesia, pain management
and intensive care. The single best answer stem is presented as a
clinical problem followed by a lead-in question and five possible
options. The best possible answer to a given question is
substantiated by detailed explanation drawn from recent review
articles and textbooks in anaesthesia and basic sciences. At the
end of the answer section to each question, a useful list of
references are provided to aid further reading. These questions
will enable candidates to assess how well they can apply their
factual knowledge on basic sciences to their clinical practice.
Alongside the authors' previously published book, "Single Best
Answer MCQs in Anaesthesia: Volume 1 - Clinical Anaesthesia", this
book supplements the essential study material for post-graduate
examinations in anaesthesia and intensive care medicine. This book
is also a valuable educational resource for all trainees and
practicing anaesthetists.
Proxy warfare is a growing international phenomenon. Although
states have used proxies in armed conflicts for centuries, evolving
regional and global security architecture is now forcing states to
radically change the way contemporary conflicts are fought. Based
on ten case studies, this reassesses exactly how these changing
global and systemic factors are shaping the ways in which states
use non-state actors as proxies in their armed conflicts. Examining
the use of proxy warfare worldwide, focusing on the last decade's
conflicts, this volume brings together contributions from scholars
of international relations and global security studies in order to
explore cases of armed conflict of particular regional and global
significance. These include recent developments in the conflict in
Israel and Palestine, the Central African Republic, Libya, Mali,
Central Asia, Syria, Ukraine, Nagorno-Karabakh, Brazil and Yemen.
By drawing on both theory and practise, it offers a re-evaluation
of contemporary understanding of "outsourced warfare", with policy
implications for how we understand and negotiate with states using
proxy warfare in the future.
