Nearly everyone in America is interested in sports. However, many
people are becoming disenchanted. Media coverage is dominated by
scandalous stories involving many of America's best known figures
in nearly all major sports. Fans have come to see professional
athletes, in general, as being overpaid, immature and obnoxious.
Ticket prices have become outrageously exorbitant. Many fans feel
that they have been betrayed by something that they once held so
dear. One Fan Left Behind, written by a typical, longtime sports
fan, speaks to and for those fans. Some of the issues addressed are
controversial and may serve as catalysts for further thought. Many
dubious things about sports are blithely taken for granted. For
instance, did you ever wonder why it is that if a basketball player
is fouled in the act of shooting 25 feet from the basket, (a shot
which he was probably going to miss anyway) he gets to move ten
feet closer to the hoop to shoot three free throws? But if he is
fouled in the act of shooting a lay up, (a shot which he rarely
misses) he has to move several feet further from the basket to
shoot only two free throws. One Fan Left Behind is written in a
style which is lighthearted, entertaining and at times,
tongue-in-cheek. Portions could be used as a stand-up comedy
routine. Other segments can be described as nostalgic, poignant
and/or deadly serious. The topic is singularly timely. So many
things happen every day that it was difficult for the author to
finish writing this book. He had to simply drop the pencil and stop
writing. The story is still unfolding.

Only one person can help crack this case—but he’s also the
prime suspect. DC Sophie Jones was in the wrong place at the wrong
time. Viciously bludgeoned one night in a dark alley, she is left
fighting for her life in hospital, leaving no clues as to why she
was there or what might have motivated the attack. For Detective
Karen Hart, fiercely protective of her young protégée, this is
already deeply personal: an attack on Sophie is an attack on the
whole team. When a car workshop near the crime scene is linked to
local mobster Quentin Chapman, the man Hart has spent years trying
to bring down, it’s hard not to jump to the most obvious
conclusion. But Chapman not only denies any knowledge of the
incident—he asks for Karen’s help. Someone is killing his
associates, and he fears he might be next. With little else to go
on, Hart has no choice but to rely on her sworn enemy and his
underworld connections for valuable information. Can she trust
Chapman to tell her the truth—or will this shady collaboration be
the last case of her career?
A 'non-election' in terms of popular perception, the 2004 European
elections in the United Kingdom nevertheless provided a fascinating
snapshot of the new, far more fluid electoral trends that have been
emerging since the end of the Thatcher era, with Green,
Eurosceptical, regional and single issue parties all jostling for
electoral space with the bigger three. Like its predecessors, this
book documents the background, framework and party preparations;
recounts how the campaign unfolded; analyses the results and
explores the consequences of the elections in both the British and
the European context.
"British Political Facts Since 1979" is the definitive record of
the who, the what and the when of British political history from
the election of Thatcher as Prime Minister to the present day. It
is a comprehensive reference work that will be invaluable to
students of Contemporary British Politics.
The definitive guide to the General Election is now in its
seventeenth edition. The renowned series from Nuffield College,
Oxford, which has covered every postwar British election, provides
the authoritative, highly readable description of the background,
the campaign and the results. David Butler and Dennis Kavanagh
provide thoroughly documented coverage and analysis of the
campaigns from party headquarters and from the
constituencies.
Twentieth-Century British Political Facts is the definitive record of the who, the what and the when of British political history in the 1900s, providing reliable information which could not otherwise be found without many hours of digging in a library. Refined and updated since the seventh edition, this unique work has become as standard reference book for scholars, journalists, politicians, civil servants, students and all readers with an interest in political history.
The 10th edition of a library classic, "British Political Facts
"records the who, the what and when of British political life from
1900 to the present day. Thoroughly researched and updated, this
reliable and unique work is a treasure trove of information for
scholars and politicos alike.
Is Karen Hart's latest investigation a routine missing persons
case-or part of a dark conspiracy? Detective Karen Hart is finally
getting her life back on track-enjoying her new relationship and
dealing with the grief in her past. Then someone from her
counselling group asks for help locating a missing friend, Phoebe
Woodrow, who went out partying and never came home. Karen wonders
if Phoebe's disappearance might be related to a recent spate of
women having their drinks spiked. As she digs deeper, she finds out
that Phoebe's work in medical research involved a shifty alliance
with Quentin Chapman, a menacing local gangster-but it was also
about to make her a fortune. Did Phoebe know too much? Or was it
professional jealousy that put her life at risk? Chapman makes it
very clear that he doesn't appreciate the police looking over his
shoulder. As his threats start to hit close to home, Karen will
need to face her worst fears-but can she really do that when her
job has already cost her so much?
Antebellum Missouri's location at the intersection of North, South,
and West makes it a location that allows one to examine regionalism
in the United States in one location since Missouri contained
characteristics of each region. Missouri also provides a view of
how religion functioned for people in the antebellum United States.
The institution of slavery transformed evangelical Christianity in
the South from an influence with potential to erode slavery into an
institution that was a bulwark for slavery. For African Americans,
religion constituted part of their cultural resistance against the
dehumanization of slavery. Through conjure, their traditional
religion, they sought control over their own lives and practical
tools to aid them with everyday issues. Christianity also provided
control over their destiny and a belief system, that in their
hands, affirmed the sinfulness of slavery and confirmed that it was
their right and their destiny to be free.
Critical Perspectives on Teaching in the Southern United States
presents new and provocative insights into education in the
Southern United States, from the perspective of educators with a
variety of experiences. This book foregrounds the Southern United
States as having unique sociopolitical, sociohistorical, and
sociocultural contexts which directly influence knowledge and
classroom pedagogies. Contributors use a range of critical
frameworks that coalesce around methods including: self-reflection
through research, social justice advocacy, and culturally
responsive, culturally relevant, culturally sustaining, and
asset-based pedagogies. Through the lenses of these critical
frameworks, several contributors also address challenges and
strategies for teaching controversial topics in the classroom.
Drawing upon unique experiences teaching in various regions of the
Southern United States, chapters explore salient topics such as
race, language, gender, discrimination, identity, immigration,
poverty, social justice, and their influence(s) on pedagogy. This
book raises questions considering the ways that history has shaped
present-day Southern education and about the myriad complex
dynamics that influence pedagogy in the Southern U.S. context.
Ultimately, this book affirms the importance of utilizing critical
perspectives in contemporary discussions about education in the
Southern United States.
A merciless killer who will stop at nothing. And a detective with
nothing left to lose. When Detective Karen Hart hears a scream
echoing out of beautiful Lincoln Cathedral one snowy evening, she
is the first officer on the scene. In the chapel a man lies
murdered, a bloody cross carved into his forehead. The twisted
killing sends this close-knit community into shock. And a note to
the police from the murderer, signed by 'The Cleanser', confirms
their worst fears: this sadistic slaying is the first of many. The
ritual killings will never stop until Hart uncovers the murderer's
ungodly motive. When early leads become dead ends, Karen starts to
wonder if there's a link to a rumoured conspiracy within police
ranks-particularly when an abrasive new officer is assigned to the
case. Could the key to catching 'The Cleanser' be dangerously close
to home? Meanwhile, she is battling her own demons as she struggles
to come to terms with the deaths of her husband and daughter. In
her toughest case yet, Karen will come closer than ever before to a
dangerous truth. Can she put the pieces of the puzzle together
before she's stopped in her tracks?
