Freud's Philosophy of the Unconscious (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): D. L Smith Freud's Philosophy of the Unconscious (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
D. L Smith
R2,923 Discovery Miles 29 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Freud's Philosophy of the Unconscious is the only comprehensive, systematic study of Sigmund Freud's philosophy of mind. Freud emerges as a sophisticated philosopher who addresses many of the central questions that concern contemporary philosophers and cognitive scientists while anticipating many of their views. While still a student in Vienna, Freud was initiated into philosophy by Franz Brentano. The book charts Freud's intellectual development as he deals with the mind-body problem, the nature of consciousness, folk psychology versus scientific psychology, the relationship between language and thought, realism and antirealism in psychology, and the nature of unconscious mental events. The book also critically examines writings on Freud by Wittgenstein, Davidson, and Searle, demonstrating their weakness as interpretations and criticisms of Freud's position. Readership: Philosophers, cognitive scientists, psychologists, psychoanalysts, psychotherapists and psychiatrists.

A History of the Modern British Isles, 1603-1707 - The Double Crown (Paperback): D. L Smith A History of the Modern British Isles, 1603-1707 - The Double Crown (Paperback)
D. L Smith
R1,052 Discovery Miles 10 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a survey of a seminal and intensely controversial period in British history, from the union of the Crowns of England and Scotland in 1603 to the union of the Kingdoms in 1707.
The book explores the intersecting histories of the Stuart monarchies and considers how events in each nation were shaped by being part of a multiple kingdom as well as by their own internal dynamics. Throughout, special attention is given to the personalities and political style of successive rulers. Their role in precipitating two revolutions is examined against the background of longer term constitutional, religious and social themes. In particular, the parallels between James I and Charles II, and between Charles I and James II, are clearly drawn out.

Alzheimer Disease - Therapeutic Strategies (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994): Ezio Giacobini Alzheimer Disease - Therapeutic Strategies (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1994)

Since the apoE4 allele is a risk factor or susceptibility gene in late-onset familial and sporadic AD, the mechanism of disease expression may involve metabolic effects that are isoform specific. Isoform-specific interactions of apoE therefore become critical in the mechanism of AD pathogenesis. Detailed characterization of the binding of the apoE isoforms with proteins and peptides relevant to the pathology of the disease may be critical in understanding disease pathogenesis. These critical isoform-specific interactions of apoE may involve interactions with proteins and pep tides in the defining neuropathologic lesions of the disease, the neurofibrillary tangle and senile plaque. Other possible critical isoform-specific interactions include the mechanism of internalization, intracellular trafficking, and subsequent metabolism. In addition, differential post-translational modifications of apoE isoforms may determine differences in metabolism contributing to the pathogenesis of the disease. Oxidation of apoE may confer several isoform-specific, biochemically distinct properties. Since {3A peptide binds apoE in the lipoprotein binding domain of the protein and not in the receptor-binding domain, apoE could target bound {3A4 peptide to neurons via the LRP receptor. Internalization of the apoEI {3A peptide complex into the cell, by the same route as the apoE-containing lipoproteins, would result in incorporation into primary lysosomes and pH dependent dissociation. The demonstration of apoE in the cytoplasm of neurons, with isoform-specific interactions of apoE with the microtubule-binding protein tau demonstrated in vitro, suggest additional, testable hypotheses of disease pathogenesis.

Protein Structure - Function Relationship (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996): D. L Smith, Z.H. Zaidi Protein Structure - Function Relationship (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1996)

Although many pursue understanding of the relationship between protein structure and function for the thrill of pure science, the pay-off in a much broader sense is the ability to manipulate the Earth's chemistry and biology to improve the quality of life for mankind. Immediately goals of this area of research include identification of the life-supporting functions of proteins, and the fundamental forces that facilitate these functions. Upon reaching these goals, we shall have the understanding to direct and the tools required to implement changes that will dramatically improve the quality of life. For example, under standing the chemical mechanism of diseases will facilitate development of new therapeutic drugs. Likewise, understanding of chemical mechanisms of plant growth will be used with biotechnology to improve food production under adverse climatic conditions. The challenge to understand details of protein structure/function relationships is enormous and requires an international effort for success. To direct the chemistry and biology of our environment in a positive sense will require efforts from bright, imaginative scientists located throughout the world. Although the emergence of FAX, e-mail, and the World Wide Web has revolutionized international communication, there remains a need for scientists located in distant parts of the world to occasionally meet face to face."

Cromwell and the Interregnum: The Essential Readin g (Paperback): D. L Smith Cromwell and the Interregnum: The Essential Readin g (Paperback)
D. L Smith
R1,184 Discovery Miles 11 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This reader brings together eight of the most influential recent articles on Oliver Cromwell and the Interregnum. It focuses on the years from Charles I's execution in 1649 to Cromwell's own death in 1658.

The articles explore key themes, such as Cromwell's complex personality, beliefs and motives; the nature of his role and influence during the Interregnum; his relationships with Parliaments, the Army and the Council; and the impact of the Commonwealth and Protectorate on British politics and society. They represent the diversity of approaches and perspectives that historians have brought to these issues, but all of them explore why Cromwell never achieved enduring political stability. The book is British in scope, including treatments of Ireland and Scotland as well as England.

The volume opens with an editorial introduction to recent controversies in the field, and each essay is prefaced with a headnote setting it within its historiographical context.

Environmental Issues for Architecture (Hardcover, New): D. L Smith Environmental Issues for Architecture (Hardcover, New)
D. L Smith
R2,350 Discovery Miles 23 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A comprehensive introduction to environmental controls for architectural design

With concerns for sustainability rapidly changing the technological playing field, the romanticized depiction of architects as solitary artists confined to their drafting tables is becoming a thing of the past. More than ever, today's architects must assume a leadership role in collaborative design that involves many professional interactions. This requires that architects have an all-inclusive understanding of the environmental concerns influencing their designs.

Comprehensive and broad in scope, this designer-friendly guide delivers solid fundamentals from a historical perspective, covering environmental design topics that range from lighting, acoustics, thermal control, and plumbing to fire protection egress, elevators, and escalators. It shows how the interconnection between science and aesthetics holds the key to creating buildings that are structurally enduring and socially responsible. This book:

Gives an understanding of the principles of various environmental issues without getting bogged down in engineering specifics

Is illustrated throughout with photographs and drawings

Includes a companion Web site with PowerPoint presentations

Enables designers to communicate and coordinate effectively with specialists in HVAC, electrical systems, lighting, plumbing, and acoustics

Environmental Issues for Architecture provides architecture and interior design students with the larger picture without overwhelming them with details. Exploring subjects that are not emphasized in traditional classrooms, this timely book shows how architects and designers can successfully transform their ideas in ways that allow them to expand their professional services and play a more important role in the building process.
