From the Preface The chapters of this book contain contributions
from an international group of specialists. They address some
important themes in both modern and ancient reef systems. Some
chapters contain snapshots' of reefs of particular intervals, while
others touch on relevant themes of both modern and ancient reefs -
themes that weave their way through reefs of all ages. This book
opens and sets the stage with an introduction to both modern and
ancient reefs and reef ecosystems. This chapter is also intended as
a basic introduction for students, general geologists, and
professionals or others who may be unfamiliar with reefs and reef
ecosystems. The chapter addresses the living coral reef ecosystem,
stressing among other relevant factors, the importance of
ecological and physical interactions between the organisms and
their environment. The chapter also addresses mass extinction and
provides a general overview of the history of reefs.
What role did offers of physical healing (or the hope of receiving
it) play in the missionary program of the apostle Paul? What did he
do to treat the many illnesses and injuries that he endured while
pursuing his mission? What did he advise his followers to do
regarding their health problems? Such questions have been broadly
neglected in studies of Paul and his churches, but Christopher D.
Stanley shows how vital they truly become once we recognize how
thoroughly "pagan" religion was implicated in all aspects of
Greco-Roman health care. What did Paul approve, and what did he
reject? Given Paul's silence on these subjects, Stanley relies on a
cross-cultural and interdisciplinary approach to develop informed
judgments about what Paul might have thought, said, and done with
regard to his own and his followers' health care. He begins by
exploring the nature and extent of sickness in the Roman world and
the four overlapping health care systems that were available to
Paul and his followers: home remedies, "magical" treatments,
religious healing, and medical care. He then examines how Judeans
and Christians in the centuries before and after Paul viewed and
engaged with these systems. Finally, he speculates on what kinds of
treatments Paul might have approved or rejected and whether he
might have used promises of healing to attract people to his
movement. The result is a thorough and nuanced analysis of a vital
dimension of Greco-Roman social life and Paul's place within it.
This book offers an up-to-date portrait of the realities of social
class and its consequences in the United States today, focusing on
the increasing inequality gap; the shrinking middle class; the myth
and realities of social mobility; the consequences of class for
work, health care, education, the justice system, war, and the
environment; and progressive solutions for reducing inequality and
improving human life.

The major theme in this book is that people are homeless because of
structural arrangements and trends that result in extreme
impoverishment and a shortage of affordable housing in U.S. cities.
It explains the economic and historical causes of homelessness with
accounts of individuals and families.

Explicit quotations from the Jewish Scriptures play a vital role in
several of the apostle Paul's letters to struggling Christian
congregations. In most cases the wording of these quotations
differs markedly from all known versions of the biblical text.
Studies of Paul's use of scripture routinely note the problem and
suggest possible solutions, but none to date has made this
phenomenon the primary object of investigation. The present study
aims to remedy this deficiency with a careful examination of the
way Paul and other ancient authors handled the wording of their
explicit quotations. In drawing general conclusions, Dr Stanley
examines the broader social environment that made 'interpretive
renderings' a normal and accepted part of the literary landscape of
antiquity.

This engaging, comprehensive textbook for sociology of sport
courses takes a critical approach, focusing in particular on issues
of power and inequality. By addressing questions such as "Are
sports free of racism and sexism?" and "Who pays for, and who
benefits from, sports?", students understand sport from a
sociological perspective rather than as simply a spectator or
participant.
Fair and Foul explores our love of sport, just as it reveals
sport's darker side-the influence of big business, corruption,
price gouging, political maneuvering, gender bias, media
grandstanding, and more. The sixth edition features a new chapter
on mass media and sport, a revised introduction that lays out the
two themes of the book with fresh examples, and a significantly
revised chapter on college sport that asks whether or not big-time
college sports are compatible with higher education. This edition
also features new material throughout, such as the rising costs and
increasing injuries in youth sports, fantasy sports, homophobia in
sport, "one and done," and more. Fair and Foul draws on examples
ranging from youth to pro sports to give us a deeper understanding
of how sports shape our everyday world. Ideal for sparking
classroom discussion, Fair and Foul is an excellent book for
students of sports and society, American culture, and other courses
