Research Handbook on Fiduciary Law (Hardcover): D.G. Smith, Andrew S. Gold Research Handbook on Fiduciary Law (Hardcover)
D.G. Smith, Andrew S. Gold
R6,492 Discovery Miles 64 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fiduciary duties are widely viewed as essential to myriad private relationships, including guardianships, employment relationships, trusts, business organizations, and professional relationships. Recently, legal scholars and courts have devoted increasing attention to the application of fiduciary principles to public officials and public institutions. Some have argued that fiduciary relationships are unified by a common structure, but courts and commentators typically treat each fiduciary relationship as distinct. As a result, fiduciary law is often viewed as fragmented. The Research Handbook on Fiduciary Law shows that fiduciary law can be a distinctive field of study in its own right. This timely work presents important accounts of fiduciary relationships and new ideas on how fiduciary law can be explained. Coverage includes discussion of fiduciary obligations, fiduciary remedies, the role of equity and trusts, and public fiduciary law. A number of comparative perspectives are introduced to highlight similarities and differences between leading jurisdictions. The chapters in this Research Handbook help to show why this subject has drawn so many distinctive points of view, and sheds new light on a multi-faceted and rapidly growing field of study. This Research Handbook will be of interest to readers concerned with both the theory and practice of fiduciary law, as it incorporates significant new insights and developments in the field. It will also act as a starting point of new inquiry for those looking to contribute to the field themselves. Contributors include: S.M. Bainbridge, S.L. Bray, C.M. Bruner, M. Conaglen, E.J. Criddle, D.A. DeMott, E. Fox-Decent, S. Galoob, M. Gelter, A.S. Gold, M. Harding, G. Helleringer, C. Hill, J. Hill, L.P.Q. Johnson, S.H. Kim, A. Laby, E. Leib, A. Licht, B. McDonnell, P. Miller, D.T. Atlas of Mesozoic and Cenozoic Coastlines (Paperback, Revised): A. G Smith, D.G. Smith, B.M. Funnell Atlas of Mesozoic and Cenozoic Coastlines (Paperback, Revised)
A. G Smith, D.G. Smith, B.M. Funnell
R1,507 Discovery Miles 15 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The inferred positions of global paleoshorelines through the 240 million years of the Mesozoic and Cenozoic are presented within this atlas. Thirty-one maps, generally corresponding to stratigraphic stages, provide a snapshot of the continents and their shorelines at approximately 8 million year intervals. The maps provide a representation of the gross changes in the distribution of land and sea throughout the Mesozoic and Cenozoic plotted on Mollweide projections of paleocontinental reconstruction. They do not distinguish between well and poorly defined shorelines, but the information sources are set out in a bibliography numbering more than 2000 primary paleographic references. This is a global compilation that presents the first attempt at delineating global shorelines at stage level, and which represents many years of work sponsored by British Petroleum International (BPI), and work by BPI themselves between 1981 and 1987.

He Stilled the Waters (Paperback): D.G. Smith He Stilled the Waters (Paperback)
D.G. Smith
R394 Discovery Miles 3 940 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

He Stilled the Waters is inspirational poet DGSmith's remarkable compilation of words of faith and uplifting verse. Bringing together eleven years of work, it is a volume brimming with tremendous heart. While the entire book is extremely easy to read, the simple words have the power to touch your soul. The collection of over fifty poems and one short story could be read in the course of an hour or two, but the book will more than likely pull you in and spark an infectious impulse to reflect on the poet's words, to revisit the life lessons and insight they convey, and to share them with those you hold dear. DGSmith's path to poetry was unexpected and perhaps providential. On National Missing Children's Day in May 2000, he happened to watch a television broadcast about missing children and afterwards felt compelled to start writing a poem. He wrote the title, "I Will Not Close My Eyes," and the final four lines before falling asleep that night, completing the poem the next day. Other poems similarly took form in response to observed events, including his reflections on the fear his coworkers felt in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, and words prompted by a newspaper article about the passing of an elderly couple who had been married for sixty-four years. Alongside are compassionate settings of imagined realities being endured everyday, including people coping with abuse, the impoverished living in need, and those struggling with a sense of isolation. Throughout, the poems bristle with a message of God's infinite love and unfaltering protection. He Stilled the Waters also contains extremely personal verses including the poet's meditations on the loss of his father, words of devotion that he presented to his wife, Amber, on their first wedding anniversary, and poems inspired by his son, Mason. Introducing each poem in the collection is a brief commentary by DGSmith that reveals some of the emotion and thought that led to each specific composition. Concluding the book is DGSmith's first-ever short story, "Charlie's Radio," a tale of an unexpected bond between a twelve-year-old boy and a resident of a new homeless shelter. He Stilled the Waters is a wonderful and endearing collection of faith-based poetry encompassing a range of topics-death, infidelity, love, war, dreams, loss, tragedy, old age, and life in general-offered with the knowledge that while these realities touch everyone, God's love and abiding presence pervades and sustains all. It is a refreshing and rousing read that will tug at your heart with every turn of the page.

Colour and Clarity of Natural Waters (Paperback): R.J.Davies- Colley, W.N. Vant, D.G. Smith Colour and Clarity of Natural Waters (Paperback)
R.J.Davies- Colley, W.N. Vant, D.G. Smith
R1,977 Discovery Miles 19 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Color and Clarity of Natural Waters introduces the basic concepts of aquatic optics and explains the relationships of different optical characteristics to the composition of the water and color and clarity phenomena. This scientific understanding is the basis for management of the optical quality of waters. The practical management of color and clarity of natural waters is covered in depth with guidelines for the protection of optical water quality. Case studies illustrate concepts and management principles with practical examples such as the effects of waste discharge and of phytoplankton growth. The authors look to the future of optical water quality, identifying research needs in aquatic optics as applied to the practical problems of water management. Appendices define quantities, give measurement "recipes" and worked examples to help the reader in the practical management of optical water quality. Originally published in 1993, Color and Clarity of Natural Waters will be of interest to water quality professionals, water resource engineers and managers, government agencies, aquatic biologists, ecologists and students in environmental management and water and wastewater courses. R. J. (Rob) Davies-Colley is a Principal Scientist leading a group of researchers in the field of aquatic pollution at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in Hamilton, New Zealand. He has been a researcher in water quality and related fields at NIWA since 1977. He has lead various projects in the field of optical water quality and is the author of more than 70 refereed scientific papers in diverse areas of riparian ecology and water quality. W. N. (Bill) Vant is a senior water quality manager with Environment Waikato (a regional government body charged with environmental management) in Hamilton, New Zealand. He was a researcher with NIWA from 1980 to 1997. His scientific contributions include identification of research needs for lake management and research on estuarine water quality. D. G.
