The late Sir Arthur Pickard-Cambridge devoted his life to the study of all aspects of the Greek theatre. The first edition of his authoritative work The Dramatic Festivals of Athens was published posthumously in 1953; the second, fully revised and updated by J. Gould and D. M. Lewis, was issued in 1968. It is now made available once again to students and scholars, and this latest reissue includes a new Supplement which brings the evidence fully up to date. Generously illustrated, the work is unique in its full presentation of the evidence - literary, epigraphic, and archaeological - on which any discussion of the dramatic festivals must be based, as well as in its treatment of the difficulties of interpretation. '...(this book) is a work of the first importance: not only does it contain practically everything that is known about the Festivals themselves, but the author has dealt at great length with the Actors, Costume, the Chorus, the Audience, and the Artists of Dionysus... It does indeed constitute the most authoritative and up-to-date record of this subject yet produced in English.' Greece and Rome
Volume VI of the new edition of The Cambridge Ancient History covers years that include the rise of Macedon and the campaigns of Alexander the Great. The volume treats the politics and economy not only of old Greece but also of the Near East and the western Mediterranean. It has sections on the continued development of classical art and the formation of the philosophical schools in Athens. This second edition, completely replanned and rewritten, is a full and reliable guide to the advances in scholarship of the past sixty-five years.
Keratin fibres, particularly wool fibres, constitute an important natural raw material in textiles due to their comfort and thermal proprieties. Wool coloration demands an understanding of the complex nature of the interplay between wool fibre chemistry, morphology and the coloration processes. The Coloration of Wool and other Keratin Fibres is a comprehensive treatment, written by leading international experts, of the chemistry and chemical processes involved in wool dyeing, printing, preparation and finishing. The book covers: * the chemical and physical structure of wool keratin fibres, detailing their complex heterogeneity and the subtle links between fibre structure and dyeability * the coloration of fabrics containing wool, including a variety of wool blends such as wool/silk, wool/polyester and wool/cotton, and luxury keratin fibres such as mohair, cashmere and camel * the chemistry of the various types of dyes utilised in wool dyeing and in-depth discussions on the physical properties to optimise these processes * practical application of dyes to wool in all its forms, loose stock, combed tops, yarns and piece goods, is covered in the chapter on wool dyeing machinery * two chapters, one on bleaching and whitening and one on dyeing human hair, provide a valuable extension to the topic of cosmetic chemistry The Coloration of Wool and other Keratin Fibres is essential reading for professionals world-wide working in companies involved in the dyeing and printing of wool, wool blends and other keratin fibres and also for the producers of dyes and auxiliary dyeing agents. It is a valuable resource for teachers and students of universities and technical institutes, as well as for researchers who are focusing their investigations on wool, wool blends, human hair or dyes and auxiliaries. The first section of this volume examines the Persian empire, the regions it comprised, and its expansion under Cyrus, Darius, and Xerxes. In Greece, Sparta attained maturity as the leader of a military coalition and Athens passed through a period of enlightened tyranny to a moderate democracy of dynamic energy and intelligence. Given the contrast between Greek idealism and Persian absolutism a clash between the two empires was inevitable. Important chapters deal with the revolt of Ionian Greeks against the Persians, and the two Persian invasions of Greece including epic battles at Marathon, Tthermopylae, and Salamis. The book's third part turns to the Western Mediterranean: Italy becomes a significant factor in the area's historical development and is explored in terms of its peoples and languages from the Bronze to the Iron Ages.
Set in the early 1900s, this is the story of two families torn apart by conflict, suspicion and betrayal, and takes us from a safe village backwater in the Welsh Marches to the drought-ridden perils of the Australian outback. The harsh reality of racial prejudice is told from both sides in an era when Gypsies were a common sight in the hop yards and by-ways of Herefordshire. For twenty years 'Old' Eli Jenkins has kept a secret that will determine the fate of a young woman. Upon his death, Lily's world crumbles as she sees her future opportunities slip away. Yet there is one person who can offer her a chance of happiness, but first she must forgive him.
Following the untimely death of the father he idolised, portrait painter Jacob Douglas fears that the dark shadow of his past may once again be catching up with him. But life seems to take a turn for the better when he meets Alison. She is everything Jacob ever wanted in a woman, warm, bright, funny, sexy... They look towards a bright future together and all seems perfect. So when Alison leaves abruptly one afternoon, then refuses to see him or return any of his calls, Jacob is left confused and devastated. In a desperate quest to find answers, Jacob embarks on a self-destructive and ultimately deadly course of action that takes him through the bright lights and back streets of Glasgow, over the rolling green countryside of Northern Ireland, climaxing amidst the ominous, feral beauty of Loch Lomond. It is a journey of rebirth and death, of excess and obsession in which the divisions between reality and dark fantasy become increasingly distorted.
