"The Fourth Book" is about my later years in this farming community
and working in a foundry, grandkids, older parents and things I
learned along the way that others might relate to.
WORK AND PLAY in southern Indiana" is the third in a series of my
books. It is in the time of the 1970's and 1980's. In it is some
things learned working construction and then at a foundry. Also are
thoughts on three wheelers, rafting creeks and walking through
train tunnels. My first book MAPLE GROVE, was of growing up on a
dairy farm. My second book, MAPLE GROVE THE 60's, was of some
things I learned during my teenage years. Wanting to save stories
for my grandchildren, I bought a computer in 1990 and started
compiling my hand written writings. I am just an average person
with my average stories. People seem to enjoy relating to these
average stories, remembering their version of life.
MAPLE GROVE THE 60s is about some experiences in 4-H, middle
school, high School, the guard and a few places I worked in the
1960's. Also are some thoughts on driving cars, shooting guns,
riding cycles and being a teenager. The book is a continuation of
my first book MAPLE GROVE (about growing up in this neighborhood.)
This book was written while living in the Maple Grove neighborhood.
It is about the people and work in the Maple Grove area north of
Bloomington and some of the events on my dad's farm. Dad called it
the Showers Hedgerow Farm because the farm was owned by the Showers
furniture company and the many rows of large hedge trees (Osage
Orange). The chapters Blanche and James are of my parents and some
family history. They are also about the time our family moved from
Lawrence County, Indiana to our farm in the Maple Grove area. The
farm was once owned by the Showers family, who cropped and sold
hardwood from this and surrounding farms. The neighbor women cooked
in the summer home and the men worked in the fields and the woods
before going home to thier own farms. The Showers Company also had
a factory in Bloomington, which sold furniture world wide, starting
about 1869.
