In this pioneering, practical book for parents, neuroscientist Daniel J. Siegel and parenting expert Tina Payne Bryson explain the new science of how a child’s brain is wired and how it matures.
Different parts of a child’s brain develop at different speeds and understanding these differences can help you turn any outburst, argument, or fear into a chance to integrate your child’s brain and raise calmer, happier children.
Featuring clear explanations, age-appropriate strategies and illustrations that will help you explain these concepts to your child, The Whole-Brain Child will help your children to lead balanced, meaningful, and connected lives using twelve key strategies, including:
- Name It to Tame It: Corral raging right-brain behavior through left-brain storytelling, appealing to the left brain’s affinity for words and reasoning to calm emotional storms and bodily tension.
- Engage, Don’t Enrage: Keep your child thinking and listening, instead of purely reacting.
- Move It or Lose It: Use physical activities to shift your child’s emotional state.
- Let the Clouds of Emotion Roll By: Guide your children when they are stuck on a negative emotion, and help them understand that feelings come and go.
- SIFT: Help children pay attention to the Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts within them so that they can make better decisions and be more flexible.
- Connect Through Conflict: Use discord to encourage empathy and greater social success.
Charity and Condescension explores how condescension, a traditional
English virtue, went sour in the nineteenth century, and considers
the ways in which the failure of condescension influenced Victorian
efforts to reform philanthropy and to construct new narrative
models of social conciliation. In the literary work of authors like
Dickens, Eliot, and Tennyson, and in the writing of reformers like
Octavia Hill and Samuel Barnett, condescension--once a sign of the
power and value of charity--became an emblem of charity's
limitations.
Charity and Condescension argues that, despite its reputation for
idealistic self-assurance, Victorian charity frequently doubted its
own operations and was driven by creative self-critique. Through
sophisticated and original close readings of important Victorian
texts, Siegel shows how these important ideas developed even as
England struggled to deal with its growing underclass and an
expanding notion of the state's responsibility to its poor.
From a pioneer in the field of mental health comes a groundbreaking
book on the healing power of "mindsight," the potent skill that is
the basis for both emotional and social intelligence. Mindsight
allows you to make positive changes in your brain–and in your life.
• Is there a memory that torments you, or an irrational fear you
can' t shake?
• Do you sometimes become unreasonably angry or upset and find it
hard to calm down?
• Do you ever wonder why you can't stop behaving the way you do, no
matter how hard you try?
• Are you and your child (or parent, partner, or boss) locked
in a seemingly inevitable pattern of conflict?
What if you could escape traps like these and live a fuller,
richer, happier life? This isn't mere speculation but the result of
twenty-five years of careful hands-on clinical work by Daniel J.
Siegel, M.D. A Harvard-trained physician, Dr. Siegel is one of the
revolutionary global innovators in the integration of brain science
into the practice of psychotherapy. Using case histories from his
practice, he shows how, by following the proper steps, nearly
everyone can learn how to focus their attention on the internal
world of the mind in a way that will literally change the wiring
and architecture of their brain.
Through his synthesis of a broad range of scientific research with
applications to everyday life, Dr. Siegel has developed novel
approaches that have helped hundreds of patients heal themselves
from painful events in the past and liberate themselves from
obstacles blocking their happiness in the present. And now he has
written the first book that will help all of us understand the
potential we have to create our own lives. Showing us mindsight in
action, Dr. Siegel describes
• a sixteen-year-old boy with bipolar disorder who uses meditation
and other techniques instead of drugs to calm the emotional storms
that made him suicidal
• a woman paralyzed by anxiety, who uses mindsight to discover, in
an unconscious memory of a childhood accident, the source of her
dread
• a physician–the author himself–who pays attention to his
intuition, which he experiences as a "vague, uneasy feeling in my
belly, a gnawing restlessness in my heart and my gut," and tracks
down a patient who could have gone deaf because of an inaccurately
written prescription for an ear infection
• a twelve-year-old girl with OCD who learns a meditation that is
"like watching myself from outside myself" and, using a form of
internal dialogue, is able to stop the compulsive behaviors that
have been tormenting her
These and many other extraordinary stories illustrate how mindsight
can help us master our emotions, heal our relationships, and reach
our fullest potential.
A book as inspiring as it is informative, as practical as it is
profound, Mindsight offers exciting new proof that we aren't
hardwired to behave in certain ways, but instead have the ability
to harness the power of our minds to resculpt the neural pathways
of our brains in ways that will be life-transforming.
Reb Zalman turns to the implications of his reworking of Jewish
mysticism. In previous books, he outlined his belief system using
the kabbalistic image of the Ten S'firot, reframed the Lurianic
concept of the breaking of the vessels, and argued for the
continued centrality of a messianic teleology in Judaism. Now, he
outlines how this new mystical vision can be applied to Halachah,
the expression of vision in the details of living. Integral
Halachah "transcends and includes," maintaining continuity with the
past and providing flexibility for the present. This book is torah
she-b'al peh/oral teaching, allowing for update and revision.
I deal with the rubble of the holocaust, so please don't expect
order and precision. Rather, join me in relating to ancient
questions needing new answers in this time of paradigm shift. How
do we find meaning by continuing to be Jews? How do we connect to
joy, to purpose, and why should we want to within a Jewish context,
if it has been the cause of so much pain?
The way I can answer these questions is by creating a new,
transcending, Judaism which honors the past and goes beyond it. Our
practice must reference the larger purpose of the Jewish people in
the world, our commitment to God and to what we call tikkun olam,
to being agents of redemption. We now also know that we are not
alone in this commitment, but part of something greater, a sharing
with other people and paths. (Reb Zalman)

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2007 im Fachbereich BWL -
Rechnungswesen, Bilanzierung, Steuern, Note: 2,0, Hochschule
Pforzheim, 12 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch,
Abstract: In dieser Ausarbeitung soll die geplante Reform des
Handelsgesetzbuches (HGB) im Rahmen des
Bilanzrechtsmodernisierungsgesetzes (BilMoG) naher untersucht
werden. Wie viele Reformen im deutschen Recht ist auch diese durch
Vorgaben ausBrussel notwendig geworden.
einstellen muss. Weiterhin wurde auf steuerliche Gesichtspunkte nur
an wenigen Stellen verkurzt Stellung genom
Wouldn't it be great if your child could exercise, have fun, and
build concentration skills all at the same time? In 2006, the
Little Flower Yoga program was developed by teacher and certified
yoga instructor Jennifer Cohen Harper, when her successful use of
yoga in her kindergarten classroom led to requests by other
students, teachers, and administrators for yoga programs of their
own. Little Flower Yoga for Kids offers this fun and unique program
combining yoga and mindfulness in an easy-to-read format. Written
specifically for parents and kids, the book aims at teaching
children to pay attention, increase focus, and balance their
emotions-all while building physical strength and flexibility.
Based on a growing body of evidence that yoga and mindfulness
practices can help children develop focus and concentration, the
simple yoga exercises in this book can easily be integrated into
their child's daily routine, ultimately improving health, behavior,
and even school achievement. The book details the five main
components of the program: connect, breath, move, focus, and relax.
Drawing on these components, Harper shares practical activities
that parents can use with their children both on a daily basis and
as applied to particularly challenging issues. And while this book
is targeted to parents, teachers may also find it extremely useful
in helping students achieve better attention and focus.
