This is the optional - and less expensive - Black and White version
of The Bad Kids Book of Poems, containing 32 humorous, rhyming
poems and 105 accompanying cartoons about kids who do things they
shouldn't do, like being reckless, selfish, gluttonous, foolish,
disrespectful, malicious, impulsive, lazy, stupid, dishonest,
disobedient, petulant, unkind, irresponsible, unhygienic,
imprudent, etc., and the unfortunate but darkly humorous
consequences of such behavior. Especially since some of the kids in
the poems end up maimed or dead and on account of the dark humor
(although none of the cartoons are gory or morally offensive),
parents might want to consider whether this book is appropriate for
their very young children, especially if they are under the age of
about 7 or 8. The target audience is kids from about 8 to 98 years
old. Here are a few of the shorter poems, so you can get an idea:
Gossiping Gail - Gail liked to gossip Behind the others' backs; But
this made some girls angry; One attacked her with an ax. Ricky the
Unsafe Rider - Ricky used to ride his bike Without reflectors on;
And now he rides a wheelchair, Since both his legs are gone.
Excerpt of page 188 Part Two, "Jed's Place,"] "Lord, I don't know
you near as well as I should, and prob'ly don't deserve your help
but for sure that bear don't need any. Let me shoot straight an'
hit him hard!" He remembered for all his remaining days every vivid
detail of those next moments. He saw how the bear's fur rippled in
the breeze as it ran. How the pebbles shot from underfoot as the
monster strove for more speed. And those eyes! Those awful,
red-rimmed, hate-filled eyes! Spittle was dripping from its jowls,
and the open mouth exposed yellowed, broken teeth. The sounds
coming from that gaping mouth couldn't be called a growl, or even a
roar. More like a scream of rage, as Montana later recalled.
