Leadership successes and failures are in the media every day. We
are in a global political and financial crisis which is changing
how we think about our lives and our futures. The authors present a
leadership model for the future which creates the right conditions
for people to thrive, individually and collectively, and achieve
significant goals.
Work-life balance isn't about where or how you spend your time. At
least not solely. It's about where and how you use and replenish
your energy. Work matters. Life matters. Work-life matters. As we
start to navigate life during and after the pandemic, employers and
employees are increasingly re-evaluating how work can be made more
sustainable and more fulfilling. Many employees - particularly Gen
X and Gen Z - are seeking a new psychological contract with their
employers. Putting these trends into context and offering practical
solutions, this book takes a deep dive into why work matters as
part of a healthy and fulfilling life. The authors present a new
and different way of thinking about the matter of balance, arguing
that there is no hard divide between 'work' and life' because
'work' takes place entirely within 'life' and you can't balance two
things when one is a subset of the other. To achieve the balance
required for a healthy existence, we need to recognise that there
are activities in all parts of work-life that drain our energy and
others that give us a buzz. Rather than trying to solve the drain
of hard work by living it large at the weekend - or compensating
for an unfulfilling home life by working like a demon, we need to
create balance at work and balance at home. Now is a golden
opportunity to re-examine the world of work and job-craft to make
them more satisfying, less draining and more energising. The ideas
in this book provide a practical guide to help that process.

There was nothing quite like the Thames-Clyde Express. Covering
well over 400 miles, its route stretched from the dreaming spires
of London’s St Pancras via the Shires of England, the legendary
Settle-Carlisle line, Walter Scott’s Border Country and finally
into Glasgow – the Second City of Empire. It never offered the
quickest journey between England and Scotland, but it was
undoubtedly the most scenic. A former signalman on the tracks of
the Thames-Clyde Express, David Pendleton has written what he terms
‘a love letter’ to this famous named train. Rather than a text
ending on the sad day in 1975 when the last train reached its
destination, he instead views its history and the route it
traversed from a present-day perspective. Here is a rich mix of
anecdotes and observations, including attractions and oddities
either visible from today’s train services or within easy reach
of principle stations Gavin Morrison, one of Britain’s most
experienced railway photographers, has compiled more than 60 books
and has gained the highest reputation for the quality of his work.
He is able to capture the Thames-Clyde Express in its glory days
and portray both steam and diesel locomotives on the complete route
from London to Glasgow in its many moods. The result is a superb
array of images taken during a lengthy period of well over 60 years
between 1955 and 2022. Collectively this book is a journey in both
words and pictures that is highly informative and richly
illustrated. It is to be enjoyed as a record of recent times as
well as evoking memories of years long past
Leadership is most needed in times of change, uncertainty and
crisis. We are living through those times. To support leaders in
all spheres, this book provides a guide to the territory of
leadership and its three domains: the strategic (head), the
operational (hands) and the interpersonal (heart). It describes the
tasks leaders have to achieve and explains the psychology of
leadership based in personality. It argues strongly that complete
leadership is the province of diverse teams of leaders made up of
complementary differences. And now the best has just got better.
The new edition shows how leadership has to change over time,
describes how the most highly rated leaders achieve their goals and
also elucidates the neuroscience of leadership to enhance
understanding of leadership's foundations. Pendleton, Furnham and
Cowell's work is a powerful combination of the best research on the
psychology of leadership and years of iteration and practical
implementation in the field - working with thousands of leaders
from all walks of life and learning from their successes and
challenges. There is no one secret recipe for success as a leader.
What this book provides is a framework to enable you to achieve
success in your own way.
