Between the settlement of Jamestown in 1607 and the Trail of Tears
in the 1830s, millions of Indians were forced to cede land to
European settlers and move westward. Relying on the words of those
involved, this study explores the relocation of those Indians
living east of the Mississippi River and north of the Ohio River
and their transfer of 412,000 square miles of land. It examines
presidential policies, the cultural and community splits within the
"Five Civilized Nations" (Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw and
Seminole) and the various ways in which Indians attempted to
maintain their ethnic identity during their traumatic removal. By
focusing on what was actually said and written during the time of
the relocations, this work provides a window into the thoughts and
attitudes of those on both sides of the controversy.
What was once taboo - faith at work - is increasingly accepted in
corporate America. From secretaries to CEOs, growing numbers of
businesspeople today want to bring their faith to work. Yet they
wrestle with how to do this effectively and appropriately in a
pluralistic corporate setting. For help they turn not to their
clergy, but to their peers and to a burgeoning cottage industry on
spirituality at work. They attend conferences and seminars,
participate in Bible study and prayer groups, and read books,
blogs, and eNewsletters. They see their faith as a resource for
ethical guidance and to help find meaning and purpose in their
work.
In God at Work, David W. Miller looks at how this Faith at Work
movement developed and considers its potential value for business
and society. Done well, the integration of faith and work has
positive implications at the personal level, as well as for
corporate ethics and the broader economic sphere. At the same time,
increasing expressions of religion and spiritual practices at work
also present the threat of divisiveness and discrimination.
Drawing on the insights of theological ethics as well as the
sociology of religion, Miller analyzes the history of the modern
day Faith at Work movement from its roots in the late 19th century
to its modern formulation and trajectory. He examines the diversity
of its members and modes of expression, and constructs a new
framework for understanding, interpreting, and critiquing the
movement and its future. Miller concludes that workers and
professionals have a deep and lasting desire to live a holistic
life, to integrate the claims of their faith with the demands of
their work. He documents the surprisingabdication of this field by
church and theological academy and its embrace, ironically, by the
management academy.
Offering compelling new evidence of the depth and breadth of
spirituality at work, Miller concludes that faith at work is a bona
fide social movement and here to stay. He establishes the
importance of this movement, identifies the possibilities and
problems, and points toward future research questions. God at Work
is essential reading for business scholars and leaders, theologians
and clergy, and anyone interested in the integration of faith and
work.

These excerpts from the writings of Sir Karl Popper are an
outstanding introduction to one of the most controversial of living
philosophers, known especially for his devastating criticisms of
Plato and Marx and for his uncompromising rejection of inductive
reasoning. David Miller, a leading expositor and critic of Popper's
work, has chosen thirty selections that illustrate the profundity
and originality of his ideas and their applicability to current
intellectual and social problems. Miller's introduction
demonstrates the remarkable unity of Popper's thought and briefly
describes his philosophy of critical rationalism, a philosophy that
is distinctive in its emphasis on the way in which we learn through
the making and correcting of mistakes. Popper has relentlessly
challenged both the authority and the appeal to authority of the
most fashionable philosophies of our time. This book of selections
from his nontechnical writings on the theory of knowledge, the
philosophy of science, metaphysics, and social philosophy is imbued
with his emphasis on the role and by reason in exposing and
eliminating the errors among them.

This volume, in honour of the great historian Emmet Larkin, is
organized around the two themes that have shaped his work on the
Catholic Church in modern Ireland -- the role of the church in the
creation of the modern Irish state, and the role of the church in
defining a distinctive Irish national identity through the
"devotional revolution". The various chapters explore different
themes -- political, social, ecclesiastical, and literary -- but
are united by their common engagement with aspects of Larkin's work
on Irish culture and consciousness between the late eighteenth
century and the present.
Between the time of the settling of Jamestown and the Trail of
Tears in the 1830's, thousands of American Indians were induced to
cede their lands to European settlers and move westward. This book,
with the aid of maps and pictures, relies primarily on the words of
those involved to provide1an historical accounting of the forced
relocations. Presidential policies are examined, as well as the
various ways in which the Indians attempted to maintain their
cultural identity during these upheavals. Cultural and community
splits within the Creek, Cherokee and Seminole nations are also
explored in detail.
