Codonopsis and its allied genera, are a group of plants which are important in economy and horticulture. A Monograph of Codonopsis and Allied Genera (Campanulaceae s. str.) offers its audience comprehensive knowledge of these plants including palynology, cytology, population biology, morphological description, geographical distribution with vouchers cited, excellent ink illustrations, and color photos, and keys to genera and to species. This excellent work will facilitate identification of relevant plants, use of plant resources, assessment of endangered states, the development of conservation strategies, and will promote systematic and evolutionary research of this group.
The flora of China is astonishing in its diversity. With 32,500 species of vascular plants, over fifty per cent of which are endemic, it has more botanical variety than anywhere else in the world and provides unbroken connections to all its landscapes - from tropical to subtropical, temperate and boreal forests. This book tells the story of the plants of China: from the evolution of the flora through time to the survey of the bioclimatic zones, soundly based on chapters with information on climate, physical geography and soils. The history of botany and its study are also examined, with chapters dedicated to forestry, medicinal plants and ornamentals, with the changing flora, aliens, extinction and conservation also discussed. An essential read for years to come, The Plants of China shows that an understanding of the flora of China is crucial to interpreting plant evolution and fossil history elsewhere in the world.
Volume 47 of the Flora of Pan-Himalaya covers five families (Aquifoliaceae, Helwingiaceae, Campanulaceae, Lobeliaceae, and Menyanthaceae), 18 genera, and 192 species, among which one genus (Himalacodon) and 80 species are endemic to the Pan-Himalaya. The nomenclatural novelties in the volume are four new species, one new subspecies, three new combinations, one new status, and 10 new synonyms. 48 lectotypes are newly designated. Eight expeditions were made to the Pan-Himalaya for field observations and collection of materials. The author and his team determined three new genera, Pseudocodon, Himalacodon and Pankycodon, and merged two genera, Campanumoea and Leptocodon, into Codonopsis. In addition to the five new taxa published in this volume, eight other new species (one in Ilex, seven in Codonopsis) are described.
