Semigroup Methods for Evolution Equations on Networks (Hardcover, 2014): Delio Mugnolo Semigroup Methods for Evolution Equations on Networks (Hardcover, 2014)
Delio Mugnolo
R2,114 Discovery Miles 21 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This concise text is based on a series of lectures held only a few years ago and originally intended as an introduction to known results on linear hyperbolic and parabolic equations. Yet the topic of differential equations on graphs, ramified spaces, and more general network-like objects has recently gained significant momentum and, well beyond the confines of mathematics, there is a lively interdisciplinary discourse on all aspects of so-called complex networks. Such network-like structures can be found in virtually all branches of science, engineering and the humanities, and future research thus calls for solid theoretical foundations.

This book is specifically devoted to the study of evolution equations i.e., of time-dependent differential equations such as the heat equation, the wave equation, or the Schrodinger equation (quantum graphs) bearing in mind that the majority of the literature in the last ten years on the subject of differential equations of graphs has been devoted to elliptic equations and related spectral problems. Moreover, for tackling the most general settings - e.g. encoded in the transmission conditions in the network nodes - one classical and elegant tool is that of operator semigroups. This book is simultaneously a very concise introduction to this theory and a handbook on its applications to differential equations on networks.
With a more interdisciplinary readership in mind, full proofs of mathematical statements have been frequently omitted in favor of keeping the text as concise, fluid and self-contained as possible. In addition, a brief chapter devoted to the field of neurodynamics of the brain cortex provides a concrete link to ongoing applied research."

Mathematical Technology of Networks - Bielefeld, December 2013 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Delio Mugnolo Mathematical Technology of Networks - Bielefeld, December 2013 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Delio Mugnolo
R3,044 Discovery Miles 30 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Dynamical models on graphs or random graphs are increasingly used in applied sciences as mathematical tools to study complex systems whose exact structure is too complicated to be known in detail. Besides its importance in applied sciences, the field is increasingly attracting the interest of mathematicians and theoretical physicists also because of the fundamental phenomena (synchronization, phase transitions etc.) that can be studied in the relatively simple framework of dynamical models of random graphs. This volume was developed from the Mathematical Technology of Networks conference held in Bielefeld, Germany in December 2013. The conference was designed to bring together functional analysts, mathematical physicists, and experts in dynamical systems. The contributors to this volume explore the interplay between theoretical and applied aspects of discrete and continuous graphs. Their work helps to close the gap between different avenues of research on graphs, including metric graphs and ramified structures.

R1,853 Discovery Miles 18 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book contains contributions from the participants of the research group hosted by the ZiF - Center for Interdisciplinary Research at the University of Bielefeld during the period 2013-2017 as well as from the conclusive conference organized at Bielefeld in December 2017. The contributions consist of original research papers: they mirror the scientific developments fostered by this research program or the state-of-the-art results presented during the conclusive conference. The volume covers current research in the areas of operator theory and dynamical systems on networks and their applications, indicating possible future directions. The book will be interesting to researchers focusing on the mathematical theory of networks; it is unique as, for the first time, continuous network models - a subject that has been blooming in the last twenty years - are studied alongside more classical and discrete ones. Thus, instead of two different worlds often growing independently without much intercommunication, a new path is set, breaking with the tradition. The fruitful and beneficial exchange of ideas and results of both communities is reflected in this book.

Control Theory of Infinite-Dimensional Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Joachim Kerner, Hafida Laasri, Delio Mugnolo Control Theory of Infinite-Dimensional Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Joachim Kerner, Hafida Laasri, Delio Mugnolo
R4,318 Discovery Miles 43 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book presents novel results by participants of the conference "Control theory of infinite-dimensional systems" that took place in January 2018 at the FernUniversitat in Hagen. Topics include well-posedness, controllability, optimal control problems as well as stability of linear and nonlinear systems, and are covered by world-leading experts in these areas. A distinguishing feature of the contributions in this volume is the particular combination of researchers from different fields in mathematics working in an interdisciplinary fashion on joint projects in mathematical system theory. More explicitly, the fields of partial differential equations, semigroup theory, mathematical physics, graph and network theory as well as numerical analysis are all well-represented.
