Socioeconomic Fragmentation and Exclusion in Greece under the Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Dimitris Katsikas, Dimitri... Socioeconomic Fragmentation and Exclusion in Greece under the Crisis (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Dimitris Katsikas, Dimitri Sotiropoulos, Maria Zafiropoulou
R2,879 Discovery Miles 28 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume uses new empirical evidence and analytical ideas to study phenomena of fragmentation and exclusion threatening stability and cohesion in Greek society in the aftermath of the crisis. The contributors argue that processes of fragmentation and exclusion provoked by the crisis can be observed on both a material and an ideational level. On a material level, rising levels of unemployment, poverty and inequality have produced new social security "outsiders", while on an ideational level, a discursive-cultural shift is documented, which has led to new understandings and categorizations of new (and old) insiders and outsiders. Moreover, the volume attests to the aspirations, but also the limitations, of spontaneous civil society mobilization to address the social crisis. Finally, the volume offers a discussion of the political management of social fragmentation and exclusion in Greece both before and after the onset of the crisis. The book will be of interest to scholars and students of social policy and phenomena of poverty, social exclusion and economic inequality, civil society studies, and comparative political economy and politics.

The Politics of International Political Economy (Paperback): Constantine Dimoulas The Politics of International Political Economy (Paperback)
Constantine Dimoulas; Edited by Vassilis Fouskas; Contributions by Bulent Gokay, Jayantha Jayman, Michael Keating, …
R1,323 Discovery Miles 13 230 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This timely book will explain, via a number of thematic and case studies, that international economics is not an independent terrain of economic activity reproducing itself throughout history, but a complex articulation of social, political and culturally determined actions that are inextricably linked. Chapters will address the role of dominant global powers in the making of global industrial and monetary relations, and, in particular, ways in which, and the degrees to which dominant economic and military powers, such as the USA, tend to shape the domestic economic environments of lesser powers after their own image. Supplementing the chapters will be a comprehensive A - Z glossary section, which will include key International Political Economy terms, e.g. international debt, European free trade area, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, IMF, GATT-WTO, Foreign exchange, fixed exchange rates, floating exchange rates, reserve currency, gold-dollar parity, multinational corporation, preferential trade agreement, hedge funds, etc. Entries will be cross-referenced for ease of use. This book will be ideal for researchers and students in the areas of politics, international relations and international economics, as well as for academics, economists, business people, and those with an interest in the workings of international political economy.

A Political Economy of Contemporary Capitalism and its Crisis - Demystifying Finance (Paperback): Dimitris Sotiropoulos, John... A Political Economy of Contemporary Capitalism and its Crisis - Demystifying Finance (Paperback)
Dimitris Sotiropoulos, John Milios, Spyros Lapatsioras
R1,803 Discovery Miles 18 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The recent financial meltdown and the resulting global recession have rekindled debates regarding the nature of contemporary capitalism. This book analyses the ongoing financialization of the economy as a development within capitalism, and explores the ways in which it has changed the organization of capitalist power. The authors offer an interpretation of the role of the financial sphere which displays a striking contrast to the majority of contemporary heterodox approaches. Their interpretation stresses the crucial role of financial derivatives in the contemporary organization of capitalist power relations, arguing that the process of financialization is in fact entirely unthinkable in the absence of derivatives. The book also uses Marx's concepts and some of the arguments developed in the framework of the historic Marxist controversies on economic crises in order to gain an insight into the modern neoliberal form of capitalism and the recent financial crisis. Employing a series of international case studies, this book will be essential reading for all those with an interest in the financial crisis, and all those seeking to comprehend the workings of capitalism.

Austerity and the Third Sector in Greece - Civil Society at the European Frontline (Paperback): Jennifer Clarke, Asteris... Austerity and the Third Sector in Greece - Civil Society at the European Frontline (Paperback)
Jennifer Clarke, Asteris Huliaras, Dimitri Sotiropoulos
R1,264 Discovery Miles 12 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Organised civil society in Greece is generally regarded as weak with rankings for associational density, volunteerism and levels of social capital traditionally among the lowest in Europe. Austerity and the Third Sector in Greece explores the context behind the statistics and general perceptions of a society of takers, not givers. Stereotypes of a country living beyond its means have been exacerbated by the Eurozone crisis but, since 2008, there has in fact been a great proliferation of organised civil society initiatives in the country. Has the financial crisis seen a belated awakening of Greek civil society? Offering a broad overview of contemporary civil society in Greece this book explores how various characteristics of the country's socio-political context have affected the development of the third sector and examines the effect of the economic crisis on it. Expert contributors combine macro-level analyses with local case studies to form a fascinating new study on the influences of national and regional context on civil society development. Their findings provide not only for a better understanding of similar movements, but also contribute to wider academic debates on societal responses to economic crises.
