Das vorliegende Buch dient dazu, Studierenden des Bauingenieurwesens Grundkenntnisse und nützliche Verfahren der Statistik auf einfache Art und Weise nahe zu bringen. Themen sind z.B. die Ermittlung der zentralen Schätzer wie Mittelwert, Median und Modalwert, die Ermittlung verschiedener Streuungsmaße, die Visualisierung von Stichproben mittels Häufigkeitsverteilungen und die Diskussion des Überganges zu den Wahrscheinlichkeitsverteilungen. Natürlich werden auch die höheren Momente, wie die Schiefe und die Kurtosis behandelt. Auch werden Sondereffekte wie Ausreißer oder zensierte Daten erläutert. Die Diskussion statistischer Verteilungen und die Festlegung dieser basierend auf Tests bilden ein weiteres wichtiges Thema. Außerdem behandelt das Buch statistische Tests zum Vergleich von Stichprobengruppen, wie den t- und den F-Test. Das Buch schließt ab mit den Grundlagen der statistischen Modellbildung. Zwar existiert im Augenblick vielfältige Software für die Durchführung statistischer Berechnungen, aber das Buch fokussiert stark auf der Anwendung der Tabellenkalkulationssoftware Excel, da diese Software weit verbreitet ist. Die Anwendung der statistischen Verfahren wird an einer Vielzahl von Beispielen gezeigt, die sich häufig auf baupraktische Fragestellungen beziehen.

Since the German edition of this book, the topic of risk has experienced even greater attention, not only in the world of science but also in other fields, such as economics and politics. Therefore, many new publications have evolved. To keep with the idea of an encyclopedia for the topic of risk, this book has been completely reworked. Not only are many updated examples included in chapter "Risks and disasters" but also new chapters have been introduced, such as the chapter "Indetermination and risk." This new chapter was developed since the question "Is it possible for risks to be completely eliminated, and if not why?" has become a major point of c- cern. Therefore, especially in this chapter, the focus of the book has - tended from a simple mathematical or engineering point of view to include much broader concepts. Here, not only aspects of system theory have to be considered, but also some general philosophical questions start to inf- ence the considerations of the topic of risk. The main goal of this edition, however, is not only the extension and revision of the book, but also the translation into the English language to allow more readers access to the ideas of the book. Historical stone arch bridges are still a major part of the infrastructure in many countries. Although this type of bridge has proven to be an efficient construction type, it often poses the problem of insufficient numerical models of the load bearing behavior. Therefore the book introduces methods to adapt life loads and introduces different types of numerical models of the load resistance respectively. The book continues with the introduction of specific damages and strengthening techniques. The book particularly focuses on the probabilistic safety assessment of historical arch bridges, for which often only limited material and structural data is available.

The mathematical verification of the safety of structures can be done by determining the probability of failure or by using safety elements. Observed damages and collapses are usually assessed within the framework of expert reports, which seems reasonable due to the large number of unique structures in the construction industry. However, there should also be an examination of observed safety across all structures.  Therefore, in this book the collapse frequencies are determined for different types of structures, such as bridges, dams, tunnels, retaining structures and buildings. The collapse frequency, like the failure probability, belongs to stochasticity. Therefore, the observed mean collapse frequencies and the calculated mean failure probabilities are compared. This comparison shows that the collapse frequencies are usually lower than the calculated failure probabilities. In addition, core damage frequencies and probabilities are given to extend the comparison to another technical product.
