Nanotechnology manipulates matter at the atomic level. It leads to
innovative processes and products that are revolutionizing many
areas of modern life. Huge amounts of public funds are being
invested in the science, yet the public has little understanding of
the technology or its ethical implications. Indeed, the ethical,
social and political dimensions of nanotechnology are only
beginning to receive the attention they require outside of science
fiction contexts. Surveillance devices may become so small that
they are practically invisible to the naked eye, raising concerns
about privacy. Nanomedicine may lead to the development of new
diagnostic and therapeutic devices, yet anxieties have been raised
about the impact of nanobots circulating in our bodies. Military
applications, or misuses, of nanotechnology raise other concerns.
This book explores in an accessible and informative way how
nanotechnology is likely to impact the lives of ordinary people in
the coming years and why ethical reflection on nanotechnology is
needed now. Articulate, provocative and stimulating, this timely
book will make a significant contribution to one of the most
important debates of our time.
This Open Access Book is the first to examine disasters from a
multidisciplinary perspective. Justification of actions in the face
of disasters requires recourse both to conceptual analysis and
ethical traditions. Part 1 of the book contains chapters on how
disasters are conceptualized in different academic disciplines
relevant to disasters. Part 2 has chapters on how ethical issues
that arise in relation to disasters can be addressed from a number
of fundamental normative approaches in moral and political
philosophy. This book sets the stage for more focused normative
debates given that no one book can be completely comprehensive.
Providing analysis of core concepts, and with real-world relevance,
this book should be of interest to disaster scholars and
researchers, those working in ethics and political philosophy, as
well as policy makers, humanitarian actors and intergovernmental
organizations..
The first detailed examination of disaster bioethics covering both
the ethics of disaster healthcare as well as disaster research
Takes a global perspective where the differences in culture and
resources are acknowledged Written by an international panel of
leading scholars This book provides an early exploration of the new
field of disaster bioethics: examining the ethical issues raised by
disasters. Healthcare ethics issues are addressed in the first part
of this book. Large-scale casualties lead to decisions about who to
treat and who to leave behind, cultural challenges, and
communication ethics. The second part focuses on disaster research
ethics. With the growing awareness of the need for evidence to
guide disaster preparedness and response, more research is being
conducted in disasters. Any research involving humans raises
ethical questions and requires appropriate regulation and
oversight. The authors explore how disaster research can take
account of survivors? vulnerability, informed consent, the sudden
onset of disasters, and other ethical issues. Both parts examine
ethical challenges where seeking to do good, harm can be done.
Faced with overwhelming needs and scarce resources, no good
solution may be apparent. But choosing the less wrong option can
have a high price. In addition, what might seem right at home may
not be seen to be right elsewhere. This book provides in-depth and
practical reflection on these and other challenging ethical
questions arising during disasters. Scholars and practitioners who
gathered at the Brocher Foundation in Geneva, Switzerland in 2011
offer their reflections to promote further dialogue so that those
devastated by disasters are respected by being treated in the most
ethically sound ways possible.
This book provides a current analysis of the legal and ethical
challenges in preparing for and responding to chemical, biological,
radiological, nuclear and explosive (CBRNE) crises. From past
events like the Chernobyl nuclear incident in Russia or the Bhopal
chemical calamity in India, to the more recent tsunami and nuclear
accident in Japan or the Ebola crisis in Africa, and with the
on-going threat of bioterrorism, the need to be ready to respond to
CBRNE crises is uncontroversial. What is controversial is whether
we are on a path that adequately prepares us for the next event.
The ethical and legal scholars in this volume hold that much work
remains to be done and offer this book to stimulate further
reflection and dialogue around CBRNE crises. This is an
indispensable book for both students and scholars of bioethics,
international law, public health, as well as for regulators and
administrators developing policy and legislation related to public
health planning and emergency responses.

Nanotechnology is revolutionising modern science, yet the public

important debates of our time. "Think Now" is a new series of books
which examines central contemporary social and political issues
from a philosophical perspective. These books aim to be accessible,
rather than overly technical, bringing philosophical rigour to
modern questions which matter the most to us. Provocative yet
engaging, the authors take a stand on political and cultural themes
of interest to any intelligent reader.
