Religion Explained? - The Cognitive Science of Religion after Twenty-five Years (Hardcover): Luther H. Martin, Donald Wiebe Religion Explained? - The Cognitive Science of Religion after Twenty-five Years (Hardcover)
Luther H. Martin, Donald Wiebe
R4,241 Discovery Miles 42 410 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

With contributions from founders of the field, including Justin Barrett, E. Thomas Lawson, Robert N. McCauley, Paschal Boyer, Armin Geertz and Harvey Whitehouse, as well as from younger scholars from successive stages in the field's development, this is an important survey of the first twenty-five years of the cognitive science of religion. Each chapter provides the author's views on the contributions the cognitive science of religion has made to the academic study of religion, as well as any shortcomings in the field and challenges for the future. Religion Explained? The Cognitive Science of Religion after Twenty-five Years calls attention to the field whilst providing an accessible and diverse survey of approaches from key voices, as well as offering suggestions for further research within the field. This book is essential reading for anyone in religious studies, anthropology, and the scientific study of religion.

Beyond Legitimation - Essays on the Problem of Religious Knowledge (Hardcover): Donald Wiebe Beyond Legitimation - Essays on the Problem of Religious Knowledge (Hardcover)
Donald Wiebe
R2,878 Discovery Miles 28 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The early essays in this volume proceed on the assumption that a compatibility system can be fashioned that will not only bring religious knowledge claims into harmony with scientific claims but will also show there to be a fundamental similarity of method in religious and scientific thinking. They are not, however, unambiguously successful. Consequently Professor Wiebe sets out in the succeeding essays to seek an understanding of the religion/science relationship that does not assume they must be compatible. That examination, in the final analysis, reveals a fundamental contradiction in the compatibility system building programme which more than suggests that religious belief (knowledge) is beyond legitimation.

The Western Epistemic Tradition and the Scientific Study of Religion (Hardcover): Donald Wiebe The Western Epistemic Tradition and the Scientific Study of Religion (Hardcover)
Donald Wiebe
R2,896 Discovery Miles 28 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book provides an account of how a science of religion was able to emerge from the devotional, catechetical, theological, and philosophical forms of ‘religious studies’ that have generally characterized this field of scholarship. Although elements of the scientific study of religion can be found in the scholarly engagement with religion in the academy today, it is still primarily associated with religious and nonscientific humanistic quests for meaning, and the foundations for a flourishing existence. The idea of a scientific study of religion first emerged some 2500 years ago with the ancient Greeks but this history will show that the conditions for a strictly scientific study of religion didn’t emerge until the end of the nineteenth century. The purpose of this new science, like that of the natural and social sciences, is to seek objective knowledge about religious thought and behaviour for its own sake. For that reason, it is argued, the scientific study of religion ought to be established in the curriculum of the modern research university. This book is intended for students who are enrolled in religious studies programs, their teachers, university administrators, and others who are simply curious about the character of the study of religion most appropriate in the context of the modern research university.

The Learned Practice of Religion in the Modern University (Hardcover): Donald Wiebe The Learned Practice of Religion in the Modern University (Hardcover)
Donald Wiebe
R3,896 Discovery Miles 38 960 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In these essays, Donald Wiebe unveils a significant problem in the academic study of religion in colleges and universities in North America and Europe - that studies almost always exhibit a religious bias. To explore this issue, Wiebe looks at the religious and moral agendas behind the study of religion, showing that the boundaries between the objective study of religion and religious education as a tool for bettering society have become blurred. As a result, he argues, religious studies departments have fostered an environment where religion has become a learned or scholarly practice, rather than the object of academic scrutiny. This book provides a critical history of the failure of 20th- and 21st-century scholars to follow through on the 19th-century ideal of an objective scientific study of religious thought and behaviour. Although emancipated from direct ecclesiastical control and, to some extent, from sectarian theologizing, Wiebe argues that research and scholarship in the academic department of religious studies has failed to break free from religious constraints. He shows that an objective scientific study of religious thought and practice is not only possible, but the only appropriate approach to the study of religious phenomena.

Chasing Down Religion - In the Sights of History and the Cognitive Sciences (Paperback): Panayotis Pachis, Donald Wiebe Chasing Down Religion - In the Sights of History and the Cognitive Sciences (Paperback)
Panayotis Pachis, Donald Wiebe
R858 Discovery Miles 8 580 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Whether as a historian finding solutions to unresolved problems or as a scientist finding the causes for events and actions, Luther Martin's primary focus has been to get to the roots of the religious impulse in human existence. This collection of essays from scholars of his own generation and from his best students cover the three major strands of his work: the Greco-Roman world, cognitive science approaches to explaining religious phenomena and methodological issues in the academic study of religions. The contributions build on the work of Luther Martin and further the ongoing discussion and debate within these areas of religious studies.
