This book examines the political connections and trade relations
between Italy and China, with particular emphasis on the second
half of the 19th century and the period following the Second World
War. In recent years, economic relations between the two countries
have intensified as a result of increasing exchange and trade
agreements, with positive impacts on their political and diplomatic
relations. By studying original public sources such as the Archives
of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bank of Italy and
the Central State Archives in Rome, the author offers a historical
perspective on the evolution of the two countries' economic and
political ties. The respective chapters address e.g. the role of
international governmental authorities, the role of the Italian
Bank of China, the impact of trade agreements and foreign
investment projects, etc. Given its scope, the book will appeal to
scholars of economic history and international economics, as well
as political scientists and legal scholars with an interest in
international diplomacy and trade agreements.
This edited collection investigates the role of Italy in pursuing
the EU five targets by 2020: R&D/innovation expenditures; the
energetic measures for climate change; migration; the counter
actions against poverty and social exclusion. This ambitious book
uses a multidisciplinary approach and original field studies to
tackle this important topic.
The history of Italian colonial affairs has recently attracted
renewed interest from historians and economists. It is a complex
and involved question. Over the last few years, though perhaps
slightly later than the more mature historiography of other
European countries, the work of some important scholars has opened
up new fields of investigation and research. Recent studies have
tried to analyse in greater depth the working mechanisms of the
colonial system, broadening the field of investigation also to the
perspective of African countries and the political-economic
equilibriums of the second half of the 20th century. This study
fits into this area of research and analyses crucial aspects of the
decolonisation of Somalia, the history of the presence of Italian
banking in Somaliland; relations between Italian and Somali
institutions; Italian political-monetary policies during the
reconstruction and the first economic boom.
This book analyses the evolution of the city of Rome, in
particular, papal Rome, from the plague of 1656 until 1870 when it
became the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The author
explores papal Rome as a resilient city that had to cope with
numerous crises during this period. By focusing
on a selection of different crises in Rome, the book combines
cultural, political, and economic history to examine key turning
points in the city's history. The book is split into chapters
exploring themes such as diplomacy and international relations,
disease, environmental disasters, famine, and public
debt, and unravels the political, economic, and social consequences
of these transformative events. All the chapters are based on
untapped original sources, chiefly from the State Archive in Rome,
the Vatican Archives, the Rome Municipal Archives, the Ecole
Francaise Library, the National Library, and the Capitoline
Library. Â
This book explores the Italian stock exchange through its
construction and consolidation while examining and criticizing the
birth of the capital city. Through the evolution of the stock
exchange, the transformation of Rome is examined from the capital
of a pre-unification state to the papal state, exploring its
social, political, administrative and financial fabric. The book
examines that path to becoming the capital of Italy, offering a
unique volume for researchers, academics, and students of financial
history and financial markets.
This book addresses a wide range of migration-related issues in the
European context and examines the socioeconomic consequences of
migratory flows throughout Europe, focusing on a number of
emblematic European countries. The book is divided into three
parts. The first part deals with the tension between migrants and
their integration processes in the receiving country, which is
deeply influenced by the attitude of the local population and the
different approach to highly and less skilled immigrants. The
second part analyses the impact of migration on the economic
structure of the receiving country, while the third part explores
the varying degree of immigrants' socioeconomic integration in the
country of destination. The book offers an essential
interdisciplinary contribution to the issue of migration and
provides readers with a better understanding of the effects that
different forms of migration have had and will continue to exert on
economic and social change in host countries. It also examines
migration policy issues and builds on historical and empirical case
studies with policy recommendations on labour market, integration
and welfare policy issues. The book is addressed to a wide
audience, including researchers, academics and students of
economics, sociology, politics and history, as well as
government/EU officials working on migration topics.
Migration in the Mediterranean region is a widely debated and much
studied topic. This is due to the present refugee crisis,
consequences of Arab revolutions, the proximity with emigration and
transit countries, but also to the involvement of southern European
countries and the mass arrival of migrants. The management of
Border controls, migration, development, human trafficking, human
rights and the clash or convergence of civilizations has generated
a great deal of controversy and media attention. Migration in the
Mediterranean offers a unique multidisciplinary theoretical and
methodological framework, bringing together scholars from different
subject areas. This book aims to address the following research
questions: What are the main characteristics of migration movements
in this region? What are the most important theoretical challenges?
What are the perspectives for the future? This book begins with an
overview of the economic perspective of the Mediterranean migration
model, with a particular focus on labour market outcomes of
migrants. It then presents the original results of field studies on
the unintended effects of the EU's external border controls on
migration and integration in the Euro-Mediterranean region, before
addressing the themes of mobility, migration and transnationalism.
This volume focuses on migration with a multidisciplinary approach,
with scholars from various areas including sociology, economics,
geography, political science and history. This book is well suited
for those who study international economics, migration and
political sociology.
