Traffic Control and Transport Planning: - A Fuzzy Sets and Neural Networks Approach (Hardcover, 1998 ed.): Dusan Teodorovic,... Traffic Control and Transport Planning: - A Fuzzy Sets and Neural Networks Approach (Hardcover, 1998 ed.)

When solving real-life engineering problems, linguistic information is often encountered that is frequently hard to quantify using "classical" mathematical techniques. This linguistic information represents subjective knowledge. Through the assumptions made by the analyst when forming the mathematical model, the linguistic information is often ignored. On the other hand, a wide range of traffic and transportation engineering parameters are characterized by uncertainty, subjectivity, imprecision, and ambiguity. Human operators, dispatchers, drivers, and passengers use this subjective knowledge or linguistic information on a daily basis when making decisions. Decisions about route choice, mode of transportation, most suitable departure time, or dispatching trucks are made by drivers, passengers, or dispatchers. In each case the decision maker is a human. The environment in which a human expert (human controller) makes decisions is most often complex, making it difficult to formulate a suitable mathematical model. Thus, the development of fuzzy logic systems seems justified in such situations. In certain situations we accept linguistic information much more easily than numerical information. In the same vein, we are perfectly capable of accepting approximate numerical values and making decisions based on them. In a great number of cases we use approximate numerical values exclusively. It should be emphasized that the subjective estimates of different traffic parameters differs from dispatcher to dispatcher, driver to driver, and passenger to passenger.

Transportation Engineering - Theory, Practice, and Modeling (Paperback, 2nd edition): Dusan Teodorovic, Milan Janic Transportation Engineering - Theory, Practice, and Modeling (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Dusan Teodorovic, Milan Janic
R3,626 Discovery Miles 36 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Transportation Engineering: Theory, Practice and Modeling, Second Edition presents comprehensive information related to traffic engineering and control, transportation planning and evaluation of transportation alternatives. The book systematically deals with almost the entire transportation engineering area, offering various techniques related to transportation modeling, transportation planning, and traffic control. It also shows readers how to use models and methods when predicting travel and freight transportation demand, how to analyze existing transportation networks, how to plan for new networks, and how to develop traffic control tactics and strategies. New topics addressed include alternative Intersections, alternative interchanges and individual/private transportation. Readers will also learn how to utilize a range of engineering concepts and methods to make future transportation systems safer, more cost-effective, and "greener". Providing a broad view of transportation engineering, including transport infrastructure, control methods and analysis techniques, this new edition is for postgraduates in transportation and professionals needing to keep up-to-date with the latest theories and models.

Dusan Teodorovic, Milan Janic
R3,159 Discovery Miles 31 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Transportation Engineering: Theory, Practice and Modeling is a guide for integrating multi-modal transportation networks and assessing their potential cost and impact on society and the environment. Clear and rigorous in its coverage, the authors begin with an exposition of theory related to traffic engineering and control, transportation planning, and an evaluation of transportation alternatives that is followed by models and methods for predicting travel and freight transportation demand, analyzing existing and planning new transportation networks, and developing traffic control tactics and strategies. Written by an author team with over thirty years of experience in both research and teaching, the book incorporates both theory and practice to facilitate greener solutions.

Quantitative Methods in Transportation (Hardcover): Dusan Teodorovic, Milos Nikolic Quantitative Methods in Transportation (Hardcover)
Dusan Teodorovic, Milos Nikolic
R4,937 Discovery Miles 49 370 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Quantitative Methods in Transportation provides the most useful, simple, and advanced quantitative techniques for solving real-life transportation engineering problems. It aims to help transportation engineers and analysts to predict travel and freight demand, plan new transportation networks, and develop various traffic control strategies that are safer, more cost effective, and greener. Transportation networks can be exceptionally large, and this makes many transportation problems combinatorial, and the challenges are compounded by the stochastic and independent nature of trip-planners decision making. Methods outlined in this book range from linear programming, multi-attribute decision making, data envelopment analysis, probability theory, and simulation to computer techniques such as genetic algorithms, simulated annealing, tabu search, ant colony optimization, and bee colony optimization. The book is supported with problems and has a solutions manual to aid course instructors.
