The Road to Clarity - Seventh-Day Adventism in Madagascar (Hardcover, 2005 ed.): E. Keller The Road to Clarity - Seventh-Day Adventism in Madagascar (Hardcover, 2005 ed.)
E. Keller
R1,437 Discovery Miles 14 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In recent years, millions of people have joined churches such as the Seventh-day Adventist which prosper enormously in different parts of the world. The Road to Clarity is one of the first ethnographic in-depth studies of this phenomenon. It is a vivid account based on almost two years of participation in ordinary church members' daily religious and non-religious lives. The book offers a fascinating inquiry into the nature of long-term commitment to Adventism among rural people in Madagascar. Eva Keller argues that the key attraction of the church lies in the excitement of study, argument, and intellectual exploration. This is a novel approach which challenges utilitarian and cultural particularist explanations of the success of this kind of Christianity.

Genetic Programming - An Introduction (Hardcover): Wolfgang Banzhaf, Peter Nordin, Robert E. Keller, Frank D. Francone Genetic Programming - An Introduction (Hardcover)
Wolfgang Banzhaf, Peter Nordin, Robert E. Keller, Frank D. Francone
R2,170 Discovery Miles 21 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Since the early 1990s, genetic programming (GP) a discipline whose goal is to enable the automatic generation of computer programs has emerged as one of the most promising paradigms for fast, productive software development. GP combines biological metaphors gleaned from Darwin's theory of evolution with computer-science approaches drawn from the field of machine learning to create programs that are capable of adapting or recreating themselves for open-ended tasks.
This unique introduction to GP provides a detailed overview of the subject and its antecedents, with extensive references to the published and online literature. In addition to explaining the fundamental theory and important algorithms, the text includes practical discussions covering a wealth of potential applications and real-world implementation techniques. Software professionals needing to understand and apply GP concepts will find this book an invaluable practical and theoretical guide."

Brownie - Mascot of the Seventy-Fifth Naval Construction Battalion (Hardcover): Martha E. Keller Brownie - Mascot of the Seventy-Fifth Naval Construction Battalion (Hardcover)
Martha E. Keller
R717 Discovery Miles 7 170 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When Roy Althouse rescued a little dog at Camp Hueneme in California in 1943, it was the beginning of a wonderful story-one that has finally been told by his daughter. During their enlistment in the Navy Seabees, Althouse and his fellow members of the Seventy-Fifth Naval Construction Battalion all came to love the dog known as Brownie. He was smuggled aboard the USS Del Brasil and traveled with his master to nine different islands in the South Pacific. Brownie became the official mascot of the Seventy-Fifth, and at each island Althouse kept a record of his stay in a small notebook. His letters home were often filled with the antics of his beloved Brownie while also providing a glimpse of what life was like for a Seabee during the war. Against all odds, Brownie returned to the United States to live out his life with his best friend in a little town called Bucyrus. Their story is one of adventure, friendship, and love that spanned across oceans and time.

Aesop's Fables - With a Life of Aesop (Hardcover): John E Keller, L.Clark Keating Aesop's Fables - With a Life of Aesop (Hardcover)
John E Keller, L.Clark Keating
R1,176 Discovery Miles 11 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In 1489 Johan Hurus printed the first collection of fables in Spain, Lavida del Ysopetconsusfabulas hystoriadas. Illustrated with nearly 200 woodcuts, this work quickly became the most-read book in Spain, beloved of both children and adults. Reprinted many times in the next three centuries and carried to the New World, it brought to Spanish letters a cornucopia of Aesopic fables, oriental apologues, and folktales that were borrowed by such writers as Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and especially the fabulists Iriarte and Samaniego. John Keller and Clark Keating now present the first English translation of this important literary work. The Latin and German lineage of La vida was significant, for it placed Spain in the mainstream of European fable lore. The highly fictitious life of Aesop, the misshapen Greek slave who reached the highest social level, contributed to the development of medieval romance and the picaresque novel. The book is thus important to students of comparative literature, literary history, and the development of the Spanish language. Of equal value are the woodcuts, which depict the daily life of medieval Europe and contribute to a better understanding of fifteenth-century art history, bookmaking, natural history, and the visualization of narrative. La vida del Ysopet thus constitutes one of the finest concordances of text and illustration in European literary history.

Reflections of My Life (Paperback): Ursula E. Keller Reflections of My Life (Paperback)
Ursula E. Keller
R330 Discovery Miles 3 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Many times through the years I have been inspired to write about my life's journey with all its experiences. I had always wanted to title a book 'Searching For Love." It took me 40 years to realize what my heavenly Father wanted of me. During my life with Phillip Keller I grew spiritually. His guidance helped me to understand God's love, and to realize how transforming it truly is. My hope is that all those who read this book, will discover the greatest love of all.God's Love His mercy, miracles, and forgiveness, are everlasting. Ursula was born and raised in northern Germany, educated and trained as a librarian. However, ballet became her passion, enjoying a short career at the local opera house. World War II brought change; her adventurous spirit brought her to Canada in 1951. After years of struggle in Manitoba, she utilized her training and obtained a position with the Public Library in Victoria, British Columbia. In Hawaii, Ursula married the Christian author W. Phillip Keller, they celebrated 27 years of life together during which time they completed 23 books, a few Christian Best Sellers. Traveling the world together, Phillip used his gifts of preaching and teaching God's word, enabling them to participate at numerous church services and booksellers conventions. The Kellers called British Columbia, Canada home during the warmer seasons. Winters were enjoyed in California, until Phillip's sudden departure to his heavenly home. Ursula, now resides in British Columbia, Canada

Daily Life Depicted in the Cantigas de Santa Maria (Hardcover, New): John E Keller, Annette Grant Cash Daily Life Depicted in the Cantigas de Santa Maria (Hardcover, New)
John E Keller, Annette Grant Cash
R813 Discovery Miles 8 130 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The hundreds of illuminated miniatures found in the Cantigas de Santa Maria, sponsored by King Alfonso X (1252--84), reveal many vistas of daily life in thirteenth century Spain.

No other source provides such an encyclopedic view of all classes of medieval European society, from kings and popes to the lowest peasants. Men and women are seen farming, hunting, on pilgrimage, watching bullfights, in gambling dens, making love, tending silkworms, eating, cooking, and writing poetry, to name only a few of the human activities represented here.

Combining keen observation of detail with years of experience in the field, John Keller and Annette Grant Cash bring to life a world previously little explored.

Russell E. Mumford, Charles E. Keller
R1,245 R1,162 Discovery Miles 11 620 Save R83 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Birds of Indiana is a treasure-trove for ornithologists, casual birders, and art-lovers everywhere. Drawing on decades of field work and data collection and featuring the paintings of one of America's finest bird artists, this classic work is an introduction, a reference, and most importantly, a natural history of Indiana's birds, including over 390 species. Authors Russell E. Mumford and Charles E. Keller provide detailed information on each species, including the bird's past and current status, the timing of migrations, the density and location of populations month by month, and the influence of habitat. Indispensable for the text alone, the paintings by William Zimmerman, one of America's greatest bird artists, make the book a collector's item that will be admired and appreciated for centuries. With a scientist's eye and a craftsman's skill, Zimmerman brings each of the 165 birds that nests in the state to life in lavish detail. Readers can almost feel the feathers-and the life force beneath them-in his birds. Each intricate painting reveals the plumage (including both male and female when there are significant differences), the nest and eggs, background habitat, and in many cases a wildflower or two. A work of art as well as science, The Birds of Indiana belongs in any and every collection of bird books. No ornithologist or casual birder-expert or beginner-in Indiana, the Midwest, or the eastern United States can afford to be without it.
