David Ricardo (1772 - 1823) was a hugely influential British political economist and stock trader. This volume, first published in 1923, contains five important pamphlets published by him, edited and with an overarching introductory essay by E. C. K. Gonner. Each essay relates either to monetary and financial subjects - including the high price of Bullion, monetary theory and the position of the Bank of England - or to the agricultural conditions of Britain and proposed solutions to the problems discussed. This is a fascinating and detailed work, which will be of great value to those with an interest in Ricardo's theories and British economic history.

First published in 1966. The main object of the present work is to trace the process whereby the land of this country came into agricultural use under full individual control. That movement, as will be seen, is treated as continuous and as due in the main to the operation of large economic and, so to say, normal causes. While the rapidity and extent of inclosure varies from time to time, and while its kind undergoes certain changes, progress continues.

This book contains the five important pamphlets published by Ricardo, as selected by E. C. K. Gonner. The five pamphlets are writings of great importance, because both of the subjects with which they deal and of the principles laid down in their treatment of those subjects." ...I feel that the trend of economic thought and the new importance attached to economic inquiry make more valuable than ever the study of a writer whose attitude was so disinterested and who, despite his shortcomings, sought in all he wrote, on the one hand to elucidate facts by reference to principles and on the other hand to build up out of the data at his command a system of coherent thought." - E. C. K. Gonner
